Rescue of Concussed Bodyboarder from Drowning

In big and powerful surf a bodyboarder at a Cape Town beach break took a big and heavy wave on his head and suffered a concussion and whiplash and was struggling to stay afloat in the rip. Had Aden Kleve (trained lifeguard) and Wilder Schultz not reacted as quickly as they did, things could have gotten bad and in all likelihood the guy would have drowned. Respect to these guys!

What a bad situation for this guy. Hope he's ok. Seemed very confused and unstable when he got out of the water. All my respect for these two guys that noticed and knew how to act and fast. Very brave.

Brilliant rescue. In much less challenging conditions I once spent half an hour towing in a kayaker, who had lost his kayak and was caught in a strong rip. Finally got him to the beach and what did he do? He suggested he could swim out (exhausted and in gnarly storm surf) and try and get his kayak back, as it approached the horizon. Shock does bad things to people so don't say farewell till you've got them back to the car park.

Got in the washing machine in the surf coming off Hurricane Fran in 1996 and thought I was a goner... I couldn't even stand up by the time I managed to get out of it- this dude was very lucky! Like I was. Respect to Aden and Wilder- their situational awareness probably saved that dude's life.

I was there later that day, barley caught a wave took a solid beating and broke my board. Waves don't look too big but that was solid ground swell and the sets were pushing 7-8 feet. And everyone knows how heavy the hoek can get, and its far from anything, no life guards or ambulances coming for a while. Serious shit right here.

Surfers and boogie boarders save people all the time. Most the beaches around the World don't have life guards. If they do have life guards it's only during certain times of the year and at certain beaches. Most of the people saved by surfers are swimmers. The water gets too deep to touch the bottom and they get caught in the rip and can't get back to the beach. Most experienced surfers have saved several people during their years of being in the water.

They have super cardio and apnea. They are used to these kind of beatings. How many time did I get out of breath just by having to swim fast to avoid a set after taking a wave ? They are trained. Thats why they can surf waves that could kill us.

The bodysurfer doesn't look like he had Surf fins. Huge, HUGE mistake in that kind of surf. I have been a Bodysurfer since 1963, and I have been using CHURCHILL MACCAPO Surf fins since 1977. With fins this guy could have better dodged that inside hammering, treaded water between waves, or even GOT the hell out of there,FAST!

For those who have never experienced the low blood glucose condition as a type 1 diabetic, the condition was is hell and the rescuers stepped up and did exactly what is needed to avoid potential death of a critically incapacitated condition. From the view of a type 1 diabetic for over 48 years the rescuers did just what was needed to get him safe. Thank you from the T1D side of life!,,,
