I adore the thought of fixing things that look unredeemable. You are incredible at this stuff. Ninety-nine point nine percent of people would just junk this and be unconcerned about it. Thank heavens for the other point one percent, people such as you! Bravo!!! They don’t build things to last like that anymore. All the more reason for fixing them. It’s quite the subtle history lesson too. Regards from Melbourne, Australia.

Except that by this point, the ship is so deteriorated that it could never BE raised, it’s been down there for so long that the second it hits the air, the whole thing would disintegrate, not to mention the problem of the ship being in two pieces and the stern being a mangled mess of metal, not to mention the ethical issue of raising a ship that’s an underwater graveyard to 1,518 people

Yes, also the rust that has been eating away at the ship is actually caused by small organisms that are feeding on the wreckage, which has dramatically increased the speed of deterioration, for a good comparison to how much damage has been caused by that, is to look at the wreak of Titanic’s nearly identical sister ship, HMHS Britannic, Britannic has been at the bottom of the Aegean Sea for just about as long, she is almost completely intact and is in almost one piece other than the snapped front now deck that was caused by Britannic’s collision with the sea floor, this is the effect of the absence of the organisms eating away at Titanic

Very satisfying resto - especially the sandblasting parts - but...I kinda like the decay aesthetic of the original condition? Hmm. Ever thought of doing an 'Inside Out' restoration, where you fix the functional guts of the item but the exterior condition remains the way you found it? Would be creepy neat to see something like this toy piano working despite looking broken.

Geoffr524 when you sand blast metal, it always takes that gray look because you’re actually digging out the rust and corrosion from the tiny pores in the metal, and the light reflects back to the eye in a scattered fashion. Therefore you see no gloss, only clean metal that is full of small pores. It has that dull gray look. The primer powder that he then sprays on melts in the oven and fills the pores. He can then sand that primer smooth and then the color coat gets applied to that nice smooth surface.
