Resident Evil 2: Original vs Remake (Which one is better?)

The question that always comes up when a remake of anything is released. Which one is better? Original or remake? Well, I try and give my best assessment by having the two compete each other over a list of criteria that I think is important to both games.

The original was better for it's time (there was nothing like it), but the remake was everything I was hoping for in a modern remake (and a great homage to the classic) with updated graphics and gameplay. They did really well as a game with the remake. As an old school fan of the classic THRID person games, it gives me so much hope for future RE (I'm hoping for RE Code Veronica and RE3 remake to follow). It's a shame the original dub VAs were screwed over (sorry but nobody else is Claire Redfield to me other than Alyson Court), but really enjoyed the remake.

This is possibly the best RE channel. Anyway, the comparison is hard and unfair because the games were made with very distinct time periods and capabilities/limitations. For each weak point in the remake, there's an explanation or something to make up for it. For instance, the aesthetics and colors and atmosphere of the original was more visually appealing, but it was because the environments in the original are brightly lit. Since they are way darker in the remake, you won't appreciate the graphics as much. But the darkness makes the game much scarier. So the choice between scary and beautiful, is very tough. And either direction is fine; it's a tie. As for costumes, the choice between realistic and lovable silly is also tough. It's also a tie. I can see the the appeal in either direction. And some brightly lit locations seem more gorgeous in the remake than the original, such as the main hall, the library, chief iron's office, and the NEST. The original presents better RPD corridors and raccoon city aisles. But again, this can also be an unfair comparison due to these locations being brightly lit. As for the sounds and music, there was much more style in the original. The remake is less iconic and easily forgettable, but at the same time, it matches the graphical style of the game and its modernness. So I can see why it's chosen. And it's not bad, really. It's pretty safe and standard. The only exception is the good Mr. X theme. As for scariness, both games can be more scary than the other in aspects, and less scary in others. The remake is scarier in Mr. X, the over-the-shoulder view, and darker rooms and corridors. The original can be scarier due to fixed camera angles, tank controls, primitive graphics, ink ribbon save system. Actually, both over-the-shoulder and fixed view can be scary, but in different ways, so it's a tie to me. Both primitive and realistic graphics, when used right, can be scarier in different ways. It's also a tie. And in the remake you get more inventory slots which makes the game much easier, but at the same time you need to carry more items with you and some items take more than one slot, so... The only thing though that is not a tie and the remake is certainly better at is how they changed Mr. X.

Original is far superior in voice acting and scenery imo. Also the remake characters are very lacking in the 90's fashion and hair styles. The only reason I like Claire in re2 remake is because how great her Elza Walker outfit is and how well it defines her body. It really pissed me off how they ruined the classic outfit for Claire. I was hoping for an exact copy, but they failed. It's still a great game, but Capcom missed an opportunity to recreate the amazing experience I had when I first played re2 on PS1 in the 90's.

but the re2 remake does have the og costumes for leon and claire both the blocky and chunky ones and the same costumes in og re2 but HD

As much as I loved Re2make, it's soooooooooooo refreshing to hear some critical thought on it, and comparing it to the original on a deeper level than just "lol PS1 models tank controls fuck dat"

I do not agree with you at all. The introduction of Leon and Claire's characters originally made more sense and the dialogues in the original were serious, unlike the remake, it was very cold, the design and colors in the original version were much better than in the new version because its presentation from the Raccoon City incident did not pass a few days, so it makes sense very. We see the opposite colors of the new original version that everything was dark and this is contrary to the logic of the story because the events in Raccoon City did not pass days also the paths of the scenario A, B in the original were better and more logical, but the remake unfortunately did not present a scenario like the original, only the scenarios did not affect some, In the end, I see that the original version is better and more logical than the undisputed remake as well. Even the horror style I see that the original presented real horror, but unfortunately the remake was not terrifying

nice review!agree with many of your opinions.i really love the original since the day it was released and the new remake is a great game!

Calls acting in re2 remake unrealistic and then praises the original for having so much depth, motivation, and ugh... epicness. Yeah, terrible voice acting, scenes, and delivery in the original have been made better. One of the scenes you show to how much more depth and direction the original had terrible pseudo puns, 10 seconds of dead silence, and was just them finding a note and sharing it, which didn't need a laughably bad cutscene. The character design segment is a confused mess. Spanks under pink 90s Mom-Jean-Daisy-Dukes, apparently fantastic and cool. Ada wearing a trench coat, now thats ridiculous? FFS Man. The arguments in this video lack consistency, claire's new outfit is boring and lame because its realistic and not like her outlandish "iconic" biker/ninja/mom outfit. WTF ADA IS WEARING HEELS?! THAT'S SO UNREALISTIC! LITERALLY UNPLAYABLE!

The silent part in the cutscene shows that Leon reluctantly hands Claire the diary with the bad news, Claire's head faces the ground to demonstrate that she's sad/unhappy over the fact that her brother isn't in Raccoon City and is still missing. You don't need dialogue over that, you can gather the emotions just from the actions. The point of the cutscene was the transition of both Leon and Claire's previous motivations for coming to Raccoon City. Leon came to join the RPD and Claire came to find her brother, this is their initial motivation. Their main motivation through the story is to escape, with whoever is alive that they can bring with them. So, in order to transition one motivation to the next you need to dedicate a scene to that. Just before that scene, Leon has encountered his dying superior officer and seen that the RPD is decimated. During this scene, Claire finds out that her brother isn't here. Both characters initial motivations have reached a point where they have concluded and the new motivation, which is simply to escape, is formed. The characters discuss the talk of escape so that we the audience can understand that their motivations have shifted. This is the point of the scene. Example: imgur.com/a/HYXSk1B I didn't alter the title of that by the way. It's a stereotypical spy design choice since the 1950s, so it's a little silly to rely on such an overly archetypal design.
