I've never played Valkyria Chronicles 4 and probably won't because of all the bad language in it. The story and characters look alright. But all that bad language turned me off. The first Valkyria Chronicles was much better in that area and thats why I like the first game better.

I wouldn't call class change in VC3 pointless. For instance, Serge is better off as a Sniper than as an engineer, since his negative traits want him to move as little as possible and he has good accuracy. Also, although it's not a prefered class for Kurt, he benefits from picking double movement from Scout (that, and Scout's own movement has good synergy with Kurt's Direct Command unique ability as it allows him to fully replenish his movement bar after moving him a couple of times).

This game feels like Fire Emblem: Three Houses ahead of its time. I loved the class system and wealth of customization options with your weapons, tank, and class. I liked the cast of characters and what they were going for in the academy setting, but they did not fully flesh out the setting like FE Three did. The worst part about the game is it's story. I thought the story was solid in the first half. It's in the second half where it becomes exceedingly generic and boring.

Já vi gente criticando o jogo por ter uma historia chata... fui jogar e vi alguns dos melhores personagens de jogos que já vi e olha que eu já tinha jogado o 3 antes. Com eu gosto de animes, esse jogo é perfeito. Tem os elementos de mecha, tiro em terceira pessoa, tático RPG e visual novel. É um jogo brilhante e você vê o carinho nos detalhes, como os pequenos tanques passando na tela principal, o Yearbook muito bonito com todas as cenas pela qual já passou, coleta de medalhas, etc. Eu ainda estou em Junho no jogo é posso dizer que estou gostando tanto quanto o VC 3.

Heavy Scout are the worst class in the game, sure they had slightly better offense than regular scout but their defense are horrendously low which is funny because Heavy scout are supposed to be 'Heavy' and has better defense.

It's actually pretty bad. It isn't until the Darcsen Liberation that the game breaks it's own rules, letting story boss enemies switch classes and use up most enemy movement turns, wiping your squad. It's unfair and screams retarded game devs. *That's the entire game after that point.* 🤷 Valkryia Chronicles 2 was garbage in 2010, and it's garbage in 2023. Franchise should of stayed dead.

I for one absolutely loathe the stereotypical anime mumbo jumbo you find in many JRPGs, and as such I don't like it in this game either. But I also think people give the first game way too much credit for its story elements. I think all the Valkyria games (including the first one and the fourth entry) have extremely childish depictions of war and violent conflict, up to the point where I had to often outright ignore the story elements in order to enjoy the games. I know many people are going to think I'm overreacting when I say this, but when you choose a serious subject like this as a backdrop (essentially WW2 in this case), it's insulting to my intelligence as a gaming adult to serve up stories this weak, schmaltzy and childish. To me, all the Valkyria games have bad stories and bad storytelling, so it's something I have to get past in all the games in the series.

I know this is four years old but this is the best review of the several I've watched in trying to decide whether or not to buy the game on sale. Nobody else touched on the character writing or tonal clash. These things matter as much to me as the gameplay and yet I didn't even question their absence in those reviews until hearing you touch them. Mad props! You've given me a fuller picture to consider and helped me make a more informed decision. I see you haven't updated in 2 years but I'm gonna sub anyway! Credit where it's due.

Huge disappointment. Remakes are fine and can become amazing games in their own right whether it’s the RE1 Renake which was incredibly faithful to the OG title or whether it’s RE2 Remake which took some liberties but kept enough of the original to please the fans. RE3 Remake is just not a remake. It stays too far from the original in a way that disappointed the fans which would be fine if it wasn’t called a “Remake” and if the game was actually amazing, but the game was not amazing. It was not a hit like RE2 Remake was because it was a step backwards in so many ways. The game’s difficulty was either too easy or just borderline unplayable. There is absolutely no incentive to replay the game nor any sense or accomplishment to do so. There were, inexplicably, only three costume options. The game was missing some features like limb dismemberment for some reason where limbs would just disappear. There were graphical issues and camera issues in some parts of the game. It was just not as polished nor did it have as much content as RE2 Remake. As a fan, I don’t expect RE3 Remake to follow RE3 super closely and they got many things right but they got far too many things wrong for me to say this is a game worth playing which is sad considering it’s my favourite RE game. Nemesis was hardly in the game. There were almost no puzzles. Key areas of the game were cut from the OG. And there was just no replayability. I wish this game got the same attention as RE2 Remake did, but it’s very clear it did not.

Conserving ammo works good in the remake of the original game.

This is possibly the best RE channel. Anyway, the comparison is hard and unfair because the games were made with very distinct time periods and capabilities/limitations. For each weak point in the remake, there's an explanation or something to make up for it. For instance, the aesthetics and colors and atmosphere of the original was more visually appealing, but it was because the environments in the original are brightly lit. Since they are way darker in the remake, you won't appreciate the graphics as much. But the darkness makes the game much scarier. So the choice between scary and beautiful, is very tough. And either direction is fine; it's a tie. As for costumes, the choice between realistic and lovable silly is also tough. It's also a tie. I can see the the appeal in either direction. And some brightly lit locations seem more gorgeous in the remake than the original, such as the main hall, the library, chief iron's office, and the NEST. The original presents better RPD corridors and raccoon city aisles. But again, this can also be an unfair comparison due to these locations being brightly lit. As for the sounds and music, there was much more style in the original. The remake is less iconic and easily forgettable, but at the same time, it matches the graphical style of the game and its modernness. So I can see why it's chosen. And it's not bad, really. It's pretty safe and standard. The only exception is the good Mr. X theme. As for scariness, both games can be more scary than the other in aspects, and less scary in others. The remake is scarier in Mr. X, the over-the-shoulder view, and darker rooms and corridors. The original can be scarier due to fixed camera angles, tank controls, primitive graphics, ink ribbon save system. Actually, both over-the-shoulder and fixed view can be scary, but in different ways, so it's a tie to me. Both primitive and realistic graphics, when used right, can be scarier in different ways. It's also a tie. And in the remake you get more inventory slots which makes the game much easier, but at the same time you need to carry more items with you and some items take more than one slot, so... The only thing though that is not a tie and the remake is certainly better at is how they changed Mr. X.

I thought this game was ok, but it's leveling system and requirements, to me were a little hard to wrap my head around and while i thought the plot was ok, i couldn't get that much invested with the characters and the school setting. I DID like seeing the characters again in VC3 Extended edition though.

Great review. Whats your favorite game in the series? Loved both the first and part 4 which I completed. I am far into part 3 on emulation and its awesome. My only issue is the divided maps, making the connection points confusing at times. Part 3 adds alot of cool mechanics though. Is part 2 as good as 3 and the others would you say?

Got the complete edition on switch for £15 as it was on sale which made it the same price as the first game so definitely worth it. I think Selvaria level being easy is an apology for how difficult behind her blue flame was for how broken she is lol (hated playing that dlc). The squad 7 dlc is fan service but it was fan service that made me smile. Edy’s dlc I feel is for beginners and it gives you a good gun for early game and Edy was mu favourite shock trooper from the first game. Say what you want about the dlc but everyone needs the dlc where you play best waifu as Selvaria is best waifu and now she gets the respect she deserves! (Still haven’t forgiven Maximillion for telling her to blow herself up!). Swimsuits, SWIMSUITS do I need to say more! Just get the swimsuits so you can have Kai in a swimsuit lol.

The third has the best story, the second is the worst in all fronts and the fourth is a clone of the first but with better maps. The PSP melee classes are what ruin them for me so for me VC4 is best gameplay

The 4 is just a clone of the First. The third was the only one that felt as an evolution, aka less anime. Sadly Melee classes are ridiculous and the graphics are really ugly. A remake could fix a lot

I've got mixed feelings on the game. As far as gameplay goes I liked a lot of things they did. New classes, branching classes, vehicles being completely customizable, smaller maps that made you have to think about leaving someone behind to guard a camp. The aim on Lancers improving. More weapons and a few new enemy types. I do agree about the grind. It got very tedious after a while. The story was a mixed bag. Not bad but like you said there were some elements I felt it could have capitalize on. As far as characters go. Colette was cute but they tried to shove this dark backstory on her and it just didnt work. Zeri was an ass but became better as the game went by. Julia I just didnt like even after her comupantance occurs. Plus they started a vague romantic subplot with zeri and her that barely is touched on. Same goes for Colette and avan it just comes out of nowhere. Then theres the mc avan.... not sure what they wanted to do with him. At times hes ok but at other times hes mind numbing stupid. I do like him but at the same time he can be infuriating at times. The best thing besides the combat was the squad stories for each character. While yes they may be trophs, at least they had a character with a story as compared to the original vc squad mates. Overall the games a mix bag. I still enjoy it but it's a game I play in small bursts. I think it works better that way

I like the gameplay elements that VC2 added. in vc1, you could win basically every map with just the cp granting characters and scouts. scout rush was so broken in vc1 that once I realized how it removed any sort of strategy from the game, i almost put it down entirely. in vc2, although the smaller maps and the map spitting into segments were basically artifacts of putting the game on psp, I like the strategy they introduced. since the maps are smaller, classes with lower ap are more viable. interception fire and base defense are also once again a strategy, since the tighter pathways and instant reinforcement from captured bases mean you need to capture bases and can't just use scouts to run around all the enemies, grenade a base, and win. since you can only have 6 (i think it was 6) total characters deployed and only 5 on a single map segment, you have to prioritize where to send your troops, and whether to hold them there or park them in base for defense or retreat them to free up a slot somewhere else.

I'm reading a lot of comments about grinding. Not due to difficulty, but progression? I'm considering playing this. I just hope I don't get 20 hours into the game and quit from boredom. Fingers crossed that I'll enjoy it. Thanks for the review.

The Expert Skirmishes were the best DLC of the bunch, by far. If you pick any up, pick those up, but only if you think you want some more content after finishing all the base game skirmishes.

13:20 I think Raz is one of the best things in this game because when I was in the service there was always a Raz somewhere who is gunho and bad ass but has a good heart and means well but his emotions gets the best of him and sometimes that can be a good thing (like in hostile environment) or a bad thing when he gets in trouble but there was nothing you could do to help him. I honestly like how they build the character around their weakness and strength through growth by bonding together because that is exactly what happen when you bunk with people with different upbringing and believes than you.

The DLC is decent. I liked the one where you don't use any of the MCs, and the challenging skirmishes. It's nothing major. I think some missions playing the Imperials more would have been fun

VC 3 best story, characters, difficulty and balance VC 1 best map design VC 4 best gameplay VC 2 good in gameplay, balance and difficulty, but highschool setting ruined everything Overall: VC3 > VC1 = VC4 > VC2 (all games are very good). Mainly problem of VC4 is the game is too similar to first game. They took some of good ideas in terms of gameplay of VC3 but they also took a bit story elements from VC2, which is bad (highschool anime troopes). Overall its hard to say which is game better, VC1 or VC4, so i gave ,,='' between them.

i totally agree to the gameplay but storywise in my own opinion, vc3 is on top of MY list, i just like its darks story compared to other ones, specially the focus for its sub characters as a family - they have their own fragments story to share with and they really hold up together unlike other games from vc series, the recruits you get mostly like a cannon fodder for your battlefield.
