Today we are doing a resin shootout comparison video with Alumilite, Total Boat, and Liquid Diamonds casting resins. I do a deep pour comparison, and a small pour comparison. The resin casting product categories we are grading are as follows.
1. Social Media Presence
2. Packaging
3. Price
4. Equipment Needed
5. Mixing
6. Turning
7. Sanding
8. Polishing
9. clarity
10. My Final Thoughts
My Site www.northsidec...
This video is comparing major brands of casting resins, but it is also a video for beginners. There are lots of things to be intimidated about as a beginner, and I hope I cleared a few things up for you. Resin Casting and Turning on the wood lathe is fun and I want to share as much as I can.

Way to go with a great video. We truly appreciate the time and attention to detail you put in this video. We certainly hear where we could improve. We’re also happy to be in the “old faithful” category. Congrats to the other brands that participated too! Ya’ll did great!

Alumilite Mold Making & Casting Materials It’s always good to have an “Old Faithful” it was fun to see what the others will do, and they have their place. But for a deep pour.. Alumilite is the way to go for me. 👍👍 Thanks for following along with this comparison!👍👍👊

Very cool comparison. I've never heard of total boat before. I've tried liquid diamonds and love it for making charms and coasters in silicone molds. It cures so crystal clear and easy to use. Also in my opinion it has zero smell. Which is a big plus to me. Thumbs up 😁👍

Jake, after trial and experimentation, I shall use Water Clear Alumilite. The 1:1 mix ratio make measuring easy. It has a 15 minute pot life. Also, it has a 2-3hr demould time. What I like the most is how consistent it is. The results are the same every time. Gr8 video!

I cast my own tube-in pen blanks. Being an apartment dweller, I use Liquid Diamonds. It's really worked great for me. I don't use the 2:1 ratio. I found the 1.7oz:1oz ratio works really well. If you really take your time and stir slowly you won't get bubbles. I'm going to experiment casting pen blanks next using powders and glitter.

Alumilite says to pre mix part B and then mix part A and B by volume. You can't use Alumilite casting other in a pressure pot. Total boat works best for general purpose stuff and coatings and the dispenser does a nice job of only dispensing small amounts. Never used Liquid Diamonds will have to try it out. I also use West Marine as it penetrates deep into the wood grains better than any other epoxy. It is also less react drive to moisture.

Hey, most brands resin and hardener are not the same weight. This is why many brands emphasise measuring by volume, not weight. For example alumalite's hardener is nearly 20% heavier than their resin. This means if you mix 50/50 by weight you are actually off by a significant amount. The easiest solution is to weigh brand new bottles and write the gram per milliliter on the bottles and do the math when you mix. Some brands actually provide the specific gravity for each component in their technical data which is going to be the most accurate way to do it. Edit: Looked at Alumalite's website. Looks like their 'Clear' resin which you have in this video is 1:1 by weight. The stuff you can get in craft stores which is 'Clear Cast' is definitly not.
@paulahemphill5187

Alumilite slow is by weight and the 2 parts are close is weight per ounce. The alumilite amazing clear has one part that is significantly heavier than the other per ounce. They list in the instructions that the slow is by weight and the amazing clear is by volume. I use both regularly.

Great video, very informative. One thing I think you might want to consider is doing a video on the safety aspect of this stuff. Over time breathing even small amounts is not good for you. I always wear a respirator. In my mind it is like wood dust. A little bit won't hurt you but over time it is bad stuff. Plus getting these products on your skin can cause problems. I had some get on me years ago and as consequence developed a severe allergy to epoxy in general. Once question: do all hardeners have the same chemical composition?? Great job.

I thought this was for beginners? Not everyone has a pressure pot or a lathe as a beginner. Very interesting though for those that do. You took a lot of time and effort to do the comparisons, so grateful for that. I use 1:1 volume ratio for measuring. Your scale measures in grams, but does it also measure in ounces also? That would be helpful for 1:1 ratios as in the Alumilite. Would have been helpful to see you use the mold release , the gluing the pvc into the pail, and the pouring with the PVC set up. That's only because it's a new technique for me, but I'm sure your other followers are more advanced and didn't need to see it. Thanks, and I have now become a follower.

At 10:37 you said you would go over the stirring slow with Diamond, as to address bubbles due to not using the pressure pot. I guess i missed that part of dealing with bubbles. I was just curious as to if you use a lighter like others.

I was making my first Resin Pour using Alumilite Deep pour epoxy resin and I ran out I still need about another 1 1/2 inches to cover the project. What can I do? Is there a way to avoid a separation line.

Liquid diamond seems the best, especially since no pressure pot is needed. I am considering buying a lathe, but when i heard the cost, had second thoughts on the resins. Ill try liquid diamond though.

Have you tried to use epoxy over an embroidered patch? I have tried several times and the light colors turn black due to the black background of the patch. I have tried to pre-soak it with spray polyurethane and it kept the color over about 50% of the patch. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Only one question, why do you use a Harbor Freight lathe? I would think a guy with the you tube presence you have would've upgraded by now.
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 4 жыл бұрын
MrTaco250 A couple of reasons.. The lathe was given to me.. A company was supposed to give me one for some videos I did.. and it didn’t happen.. I’m looking at some other ones right now.. but I do like to show people that you don’t need the best lathe to make cool stuff. I will get a new one, but I’m not in a hurry.

Nice review. I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought the Total Boat had poor turning qualities. I found it to be super brittle and chipped out like crazy. A few times I even had the Thick Set tear our chunks of wood. I think I'm going to stick to Alumilite clear.

Great Video Jake! I have been trying Alumilite, Total boat and watching yourself, Phol Barn, Carl Jacobson. Here is what I found through personal experienc. Alumilite Slow is extremely sensitive to any moist object you put in it. You end up with a bunch of foam which hurts like a youknowwhat when if flys off the lathe. It is like sandblasting with glass. Here in the Northeastern part of the US, it is very difficult to get wood to bone dry unless you use cactus juice or Denatured Alcohol baths. Bone Dry is the key for alumilite to work with wood. However, I Iove the speed of Alumilite. Total boat does not seem to mind the moisture so here is what I do. I will put a thin coat of total boat on the wood I am going to use, let that set overnight, then put it into the alumilite for the final blank. Anybody doing testing with the resin's and wood without Cactus Juice...I would be interested.
@JakeThompson

Jonathan Donley Great comment Jonathan! At first I though about doing this test with hybrid blanks, but wanted something simpler to compare. I stabilize wood before I cast it with Alumilite, but I’m sure lots of folks will appreciate and learn from your comment. 👍👍👊
