This week we are converting a Harbor Freight pressure pot for resin casting. I have become interested in Alumilite Resin Casting recently and headed to harbor freight to pick up a paint tank to convert to a pressure pot. There are plenty of good videos on how to convert the Harbor Freight paint pot into a pressure pot for resin casting. I figured I would make another conversion video for you to compare.

UPDATE : Since this video has been posted, lots of new options for pressure pots that are made ready for Pressure Casting are available. Here are a couple.

The way you lay out all of the parts needed, in their packages and saying where you got them from - just epic, chef’s kiss. I’m armed with screenshots to take to the store and ready to rock this 💪

@@TheDarkArch0n that’s unfortunate .. All new parts.. I’ve heard some people say that there have been one fitting that they have changed over the last few years.. are you saying that none of the parts I listed work?

@@JakeThompson the release valve worked, but the pieces that connect to the pressure gauge did not fit, 1/4 was too small. Update: I needed 5/16" pieces and an adapter back to 1/4" and it worked like a charm!

One thing I have seen others do with this pressure pot is poor silicone into the bottom and let it set/harden before first use. This fixes the dome bottom issue and they now have a flat surface when placing things inside of it. Just another alternative to placing a block of wood with your favorite superhero inside of it. :D Thanks for this video! I also watched a few of your other videos and they are great stuff! This is a whole new hobby world that is exciting!

I've been using pressure/vacuum cycles for resin casting for about 40 years. If you have long enough working time you can first vacuum to expand bubbles and get them to float to the top, then while the resin is still not cured, increase the pressure to 4-5 atmospheres and this will collapse remaining bubbles and make a more dense casting. This is a well done presentation on making a pressure pot out of a paint pot. Well Done! The vacuum cycle can cause the resin to foam up and run over the top of the containment so you really need a window so you can see what's going on inside the pot.

Hey jake, great video! Made it really easy to retro-fit the system for this use. I'm having an issue that the hole in the regulator that allows it to set the pressure, constantly leaks no matter which way the regulator knob is turned. Am I doing something wrong?
@evanurchin

I am having the same issue on two pots. Can't for the life of me find another 60psi value to replace it with. Tempted to just cap it off completely, my compressor only puts out 110psi, and the pot is good for 90psi, so unless I'm using gross negligence, I shouldn't have any problems??

That's just proof for people that do not put resin under pressure. The difference is clear... pun intended here... lol. I only say that because buying blanks from someone else and paying twice as just doesn't make sense when you can create them yourself. Are you also going to be stabilizing wood?
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 5 жыл бұрын
Tracy Keaton I will get into stabilizing in the very near future. This process is a lot of fun for me. The creative aspect of it is endless, I can’t wait to see where this takes my mind. Thanks for the info. I was looking around for a DIY pressure pot and came across this. Really easy to follow instructions. I was looking at the price of the pot on the Harbor Freight site and noticed someone had added your video recently too. Seems you are helping a lot of people.

It looks like you are applying the Teflon tape against the direction of the threads, why? The tape should end in the same direction the treads are going to get a better fit. Going against the threads will rip the tape off the fitting when you screw it on!
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 4 жыл бұрын
No Name I’ve had it for a long time now with no leaks at any threads.. you are correct and about the 10th person to point it out.. I hope you got something out of the video besides my substandard tape job.

Zac Fitzgerald you could possibly look for public workshops in your area. Some places have areas such as maker spaces where you can use machines and other tools.

@@shmoopy4265 I have actually! The only one out here rents space on a monthly basis for around $250. That being said, I could always ask to just make a few quick cuts. Not sure if they'd let me just run in and out like that though. But yeah, bit rich for what I need unfortunately. I did come up with a solution though, just need to find a metal wire rack for displaying baked goods or whatever. One that'll fit in the pot and maybe even a multi layer one? If I find anything I'll try to report back! But I think that might be my best solution, assuming I can find one that's the right size.

What you're actually doing is compressing the bubbles so they are so small you can't really see them.

I would think that the pressure actually compresses the resin forcing the bubbles out faster than the other techniques such as heating the material.
@blackbirdpie217
@blackbirdpie217 4 жыл бұрын
@@richardmoser6068 there are some other videos demonstrating compression vs. Decompression. Compression hides the bubbles. They have no place to escape to with pressure may even pack a little more air into it than it already had. When the air pressure is taken off in a vacuum chamber the bubbles expand and float out but this creates foam, the foam rises out of the vessel and before the bubbles can pop/ collapse the resin sets up making a huge mess. You can remove gases from water and at very low pressures water will even cold boil. Think about a soda bottle under pressure the co2 gas is invisible, pop the top releasing pressure it expands and you can see bubbles.. as it has a way out.

Video is very well done with full explanation in a straightforward manner. I purchased the Pressure Pot; acquired the new parts (from Harbor Freight and Ace Hardware) and followed your instructions. Everything worked perfectly. One point: It was a challenge to disconnect the necessary parts from the Pot, but with some effort they came off. Thanks again. Peter

Thanks for the great video Jake, I had a vague idea of what I needed to do, but you really clarified it for me. I will say this tho... because my local "big box" store is usually lacking in the restocking department, I had to do design on the fly kinda thing while standing in the air tool isle. Because of that, I ended up buying extra stuff just to avoid a return trip. I ended up realizing that you only need three adapters. I didn't use the supplied "T" or gauge. I relocated the blow out valve the same as you, but the input is just the hose adapter to a ball valve to an inline pressure gauge. It's just a much simpler version of what you showed us. Thanks for getting me pointed in the right direction... can't wait to use it!!
