Struggling with PNG and JPG exports because of resolution settings? I've got a solution-focus on pixel dimensions instead!
To truly understand how to export images from your vector art in Adobe Illustrator, it's good to know the basics about how Illustrator differs from Photoshop in the way it handles pixels. In this video, I explain the history of why 1 inch is equivalent to 72 pixels in Illustrator. This is important to know for accurately sizing artboards and switching between document units.
Then, I show step by step how to export a JPEG or PNG from Illustrator using Export-Save for Web. The process is much simpler when you think of pixel dimensions instead of size plus a resolution, as you would in Photoshop. Take the dimension you need in inches and multiply it by the resolution in PPI to get the pixel dimension. For example, 10 inches x 300 ppi = 3000 px.
Finally, I explain how to use the Document Raster Effects setting to change the resolution of raster effects in Illustrator.
