Join us on June 10th, 2021 at 16:00 PM UTC for the free webinar 'Pet Food Propaganda and How to Avoid It' with Dr Lisa Weeth.
Pet food labels include a lot of useful information but nutritional facts are only a portion of the overall pet food packaging. Separating the marketing messages from accurate nutritional information can be challenging as rules and enforcement of pet labeling laws can vary by country or region. This webinar will take a closer look at key aspects of pet food manufacturing and labeling as it relates to diets available in the US, UK, and EU, as well as how to identify key dietary features that can optimize health and wellness in your canine and feline patients no matter where you are in the world.
This webinar will be moderated by WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee Co-Chair Dr Marge Chandler.

Great talk, thanks! The question remains: so how do I know if its good? They do not list all the essencial ingredients (supposedly if its complete it has all essencial ingredients)? BUT on the package it does not say the digestibility, bioavailablity nor the results of feeding tests.... So in theory this is interesting info but in practise there is no way I can choose when I go into a supermarket.....

So, something I am having trouble with: most dog food brands don't live up to WSAVA standards. I use the Pet Nutrition Alliance manufacturer report, and many brands didn't respond, and won't respond if you contact them and ask the questions yourself either. Those that did answer and do meet the standards are incredibly expensive. Some of these have cheaper versions, but those contain wheat and corn, which my dog is allergic to. With so little to choose from, how do we affordably feed dogs with allergies or dietary restrictions?

Purina is one of the worst companies and their Pro-Plan is the worst. Have you not read the ingredients? The expert on this video is promoting propaganda for big pet food companies. She is saying that these foods are "perfectly balanced" when in fact they only meet AAFCO standards which are established/agreed to minimums.

By propaganda are you referring to brands like Royal Canin and Hill's that should be 40% less when looking at the ingredients but have a higher price point to make customers believe the food is better than it is.

EXACTLY! the WHOLE thing to me is literally just one big ad and propaganda for "special prescription" foods as the whole time she's bashing raw foods and healthier foods that are new to market it seems to me. she says that lots of people have gotten sick from raw foods and yet doesn't site any sources at all. also, she says that until there's studies/feed trials to back up what raw feeders are saying, that its just anecdotal but doesn't mention that the reason why raw pet food companies aren't doing those things is because they don't have that kind of money to do that. also if she's talking about afco feeding trials, they are a joke if you do your research. she also says that food that is shelf stable is better then food that goes off which is just nuts and doesn't make any sense. studies have shown that processed foods aren't as healthy for humans and its the same for any living thing on this planet. also its funny that she doesn't teach you how to read a food label as if she did she would tell you that the word formula means the food has to have at least 25% of whatever in it or something along those lines. she also says that the preservatives BHT etc aren't bad or dangerous, that its just the public's perception of it that its bad. the list of her being a hypocrite goes on and on of course. I don't blame her at all as i'm sure she just doesn't know any better and she's been brain washed by the multinationals because they fund vet schools and give students free food etc. you can just tell this whole video is hills and science diets way of trying to reclaim their dropping sales due the rise of the new trends that she keeps bashing through out the entire video.

@@tanyasobsessions2131raw food companies CAN afford to do studies on these things and many studies have been done on raw food and yet still it has been proven again and again to be a poor diet for dogs and even when its done right it's still a risk from a bacterial standpoint. Buying a diet plan from a board certified veterinary nutritionist will still tell you to cook your food because it's risky. And furthermore... Why would raw food companies pay to do studies that hurt their bottom line? Processed food can be anything from the chicken on your dinner plane to cut fruit at the supermarket. There's not a single studying that says PROCESSED food is bad. Maybe ultra processed food but there's no study on pet foods that say it's bad because it is processed which seems to be a common talking point with no evidence. The ingredients is not a good way for a layperson to see the quality of food because most people have no idea how certain nutrients in certain foods interact with one another and unless you're well educated in biology (which most people aren't) there's really not a lot of information to be gained from that. Just like on prescription food dogs can't be eating anything else because it may counter act the ingredients there and make the whole diet useless. I still don't understand how a board certified veterinary nutritionist advocates for an ultra processed dry food to be a right food for pets....processed foods are not healthy, that is clear for humans yet for our pets it is? something is terribly wrong in your message here. BARF foods or FRESH foods for that matter will always be a better choice for both humans and pets. If we would slowly decrease the kibble and increase the raw ingredients in our pets food we would adjust the stomach ph to become more acidic, like our wild carnivores and there would be no problem for them to eat pathogenic bacteria ....I've never seen a hyena getting sick or die after eating a decomposed carcass.

She is a pet nutrition "expert" which is propaganda speak for a lobbyist for Mars, Purina, Nestle and other major corporations that make high carb, poor quality kibble and spend a great deal of money advertising/lying to pet parents. Worse thing that ever happened to dogs is high carb kibble with aflatoxin contaminated waste grains, rendered reject meat into "meat meal" dust all sprayed with artificial colors and flavors and synthetic vitamins and minerals in a fancy bag with a huge price tag. Biggest consumer fraud of all time which is to repurpose garbage from the human food chain and sell it as health food for pets.

But can you back up what you say with facts and data? Because I've yet to see any. The second an animal is killed for food consumption it is by definition becoming a processed food item. Cooking ingredients does not make them bad. Processing ingredients to get better use out of their nutrients is not bad.
@laurenscool1

Also dogs aren't carnivores so it's irrelevant to compare them as such. And you're watching every hyena? You know exactly what happens in the wild to every single one of them? You can't seriously be suggesting that rotting and decaying flesh is good for dogs..... Is that really the best argument you can come up with?

Kibble isn’t processed food like fucking cereal. Kibble is nutritionally sound. If you cut up meat and mix it with other ingredients it’s also “processed”. So you’re being dishonest here. And no data shows that kibble is unhealthy. You show me the peer reviewed data and I’ll stfu.

No. You’ve come to that conclusion before you even started listening because that’s what you believe. WASAVA is not a closed loop. Every dog food company from raw to boutique can publish science in peer reviewed journals and prove their superiority. But they don’t. They try very hard to market their foods as better without a shred of evidence. And their marketing strategy is exactly wha they’re saying. They claim it’s premium food or it doesn’t have preservatives etc. to illicit an emotional response just like you showed.
@chrisking6695

@@treasuretrovel3816 they’re not carrying water. WASVA are a set of guidelines and one of them is that the pet food manufacture has to publish in peer reviewed vet journals. If they showed data that their food is better or at least on par they’d be WASVA compliant.
