We had a blind customer who used a service dog. Big beautiful German shepherd. Really nice guy. He's eating with his dog quietly laying beside the table. Another customer sees the service dog and proceeds to throw a tantrum about how nasty it was to have a dog around the food and demanded we make him leave immediately. We explained it was a seeing eye dog and she dead ass says " those people" shouldn't be allowed to eat in the restraunt with their filthy dogs. That's why you have to go orders." 😳 Manager refunded her money and asked her to leave.

Good on that manager. People like her should not be allowed out in public. I have a service animal, and she is the only reason I can go out in public, because my seizures are so severe. She actually assist me when I am about to have one, by forcing me to sit down, and then, going, and telling someone else that I am about to have said seizure.

In my area, a mother (70ish) and son (40ish) would frequently target restaurants, complaining about trivial issues and trying to get something for free. I'd worked at two previous restaurants, and had watched them pull their shenanigans several times. A couple months into my job at a new pizza joint, in they come. I alert the owner to their presence, and tell him "watch this." Sure enough, son stomps up, absolutely irate, saying that his mother had "accidentally" eaten a slice of Hot Stuff pizza off the buffet, thinking the jalapenos were green olives, and had "nearly had a heart attack" as a result. Demanded a free pizza on the spot, despite the pizza clearly being labelled "Hot Stuff." The owner tells me to go get one jalapeno slice and one green olive slice, slaps them on the counter, then asks the guy if his mother is really so stupid she can't tell the difference. He loudly and publicly kicks them both out, advising them to never return. It was glorious.

The lady bringing in her own food is a big no-no unless it's for your baby, and even then a lot of places won't let you warm a bottle a bottle in the microwave. ex was a restaurant manager all in his adult life and this was the policy all major chains had. The story about the deaf customers reminded me of a former employee (one of my best employees). He eventually left to work at a deaf school (or something involving deaf people). After a while word got back to me that he quit and moved on to something else, saying that deaf people were too crazy and he couldn't work with them. BTW, he gave me a nice rosewood pen as a parting gift when he left my business. That gift is right here on my desk, 25 years later. Thanks, John.

I had a kickass deaf coworker who basically functioned as a hearing person would, but just needed the occasional clarification. One time my mom comes in to visit me at work and he, being the little shit he is, nods toward me and tells my mom, "I'm the HOT boyfriend." Again, the saying goes; "The customer is always right, in the matter of taste". Meaning that if they want something you feel is weird, it's not for you to say what is weird, it is their taste. This saying isn't meant for people to bust their ass, take shit, or be abused by a customer. I have a bit of a good example. I used to manage apartments and we had this one wreak of a resident. This couple were getting complaints from their neighbors all the time, something like 7 other residents, in this 8 apartment building. She kept telling me to fix the problem, however don't piss this one single apartment enough so they move. I got tired of it. All seven of the others were threatening to move, oh well, I needed to treat this single apartment with kid gloves so they don't move. Finally, I did the math for her regarding how much we would loss and how much it would cost us to have to re-rent seven apartments versus the one problem child. She never looked at it this way, and finally agreed they need to go. The business owner thankfully see's this about bagel b!tch. I sincerely wish that people with tons of allergies would just not eat out, or pre-order the food. It isn't too hard to look up a restaurants menu online, then call them ahead of time and let them know what they will be having. It bugs me to no end to see some poor server having to stand there for 20 minutes having to dissect a dish they want, then end up taking a long time getting their other tables seated and served, and of course the other customers get upset as if it is the servers fault somehow.
@nemo227

Thank you for making clear the "customer is always right" quotation. It's common for people to repeat parts of a quotation and use them in arguments; in politics, in "education", in daily life. Repeated often enough the original meaning gets lost.

I worked at Dominos for about a year. There was this one old lady that I had to deliver to a lot. The last order I ended up taking to her, she didn’t pay for it because “she didn’t have any money to tip me.” I literally had to go all the way back to the store just to pay for her food. There was also an old Karen that ended up getting upset at me, and not because of the food, but where I parked. Mind you, there was nowhere else to park other than near the entrance of this stupid little retirement home, and she decided to lecture me, making excuses like “I worked for Dominos back in the day”. Not to mention the people in that neighborhood didn’t know how a credit card worked, how to use a computer to order online, or that we couldn’t give tips over the phone. Then there was a customer who I was ringing up who got mad because of the expense of his delivery order, and because he couldn’t use pick up specials on a delivery order. He ended up hanging up on me. I have so many terrible customer, coworker, and manager stories with Dominos. The franchises I worked at were absolutely horrendous. I’m so glad I quit.

I was working at a McDonald's at the time and barely 18. Some trucker dude comes walking in, and I mean he must have been at least 6'5". He goes up to my counter and orders a bunch of big sandwiches, I think he kinda got one of everything. I just remembered thing it was a lot of fat. He also made some weird requests and when he was done ordering he looked me dead in the eye and said, "If anything is messed up, I'll go back there and gut every bastard that works here." At first I kinda laughed it off, thinking it was some dark joke. He looks me in the eye, then down to her huge hunting knife on his thigh. I'll never forget his eyes, they looked so cold and dead. I feel sure he's killed someone. He got his food and left. He thankfully never came back but to this day it scares me. But it also angers me this dude was probably messing with me and thinking he can bully some little girl.

I used to work at a Target Starbucks and we had this regular customer who usually was handled by good morning crew but unfortunately a lot of people had jumped ship and others terminated. Anyways, this lady came to the counter and ordered a drink that was very customized and I showed her and double asked if the recipe was correct before making the drink. I was struggling to handle orders while training to new employees both very anxious and inquisitive. So in between answering questions at some point the lady started changing your order about two more times in the middle of the drink process correcting me even though it list the recipe she gave us. At some point I said we'll have to go with this at this point because it's not an exact science with all the changes she's making. Before even handing it back to her she starts ranting and raving because she thought I was being dismissive to her drink and insisted that her drink was incorrect but in a very threatening manner. Manager took over and wanted me to diffuse the situation by taking my break. This lady is chasing me down all the way to the door the employee break room. She was yelling about going to the other Starbucks across the street and how they always make it perfect for her. I don't even remember what you was yelling at me once I left the counter because I was just worried about making to the door before she had the opportunity to assault me. She still got a drink for free made by her favorite person who was hiding out back and another free drink for the awful service that she received. I've never been so terrified of working in the service industry.

I work at a coffee shop in a hospital. I've had people accuse me of being "unamerican" for the hospital deciding to go cashless. I've had doctors talk about their drinks to me as if I don't make coffee 8hrs a day 5 days a week back to back, and the nurses are just so inconsiderate and inflexible about their 8 plus drink orders. My coffee shop is barely a half starbucks. Only 2 of us work there and we service the whole hospital so we're extremely high out put for a small shop. But the person so far that takes the cake is the awful woman who worked one of the IT jobs comes in and immediately goes off about how I'm not my coworker and how upset she was that my coworker wasn't there, and how she had no idea how to make her drink but to make it like how my coworker makes it. Everytime I tried to ask clarifying questions she just refused to elaborate or even give me a preference. So when I gave her the drink she got upset because it didn't look anything like "her drink" and accused me of being racist and treating her like an aggressive black woman, which just wasn't true. Now if someone talks to me patronizingly or catches an attitude I decaf their lattes and give them skim milk out of spite. I hate my job and I hate hospitals.

I've been a waitress for 4 years now and I legitimately struggle not to have a panic attack when we have a large table in, e.g. 10 plus people, or when customers use consistently rude tones with me. Thankfully the place I work at now has really good managers, and they don't let us take the flak if someone gets arsy, they will go instantly and deal with the customer themselves. One manager is also an absolute legend, he saw me getting really uncomfortable with a table of 'gay' guys that were getting more and more belligerent and creepy flirty with me and instantly, without me saying a word, took over their service so I didn't have to deal with them. He also let me go home once when I told him I was on the brink of a panic attack, which is more than any other boss has ever done for me before.

Lady who booked a special table setup (4 tables together with 4 people per table + one on each end) Had 2 waiters and me as a bartender for their entire stay, from 4 in the evening until 15 min past 10. Only thing that went wrong that night was that we got one cup of coffee wrong, seeing that we basically served drinks to that table at all time all night it was not a huge thing. Her husband wanted to tip us 20 pound each (about 20 dollars each) and the lady said "they do not deserve any money after the horrible service" husband told her off and said that we did great. She complained to our manager, but the husband told our manager to not listen to his wife cause she is just being a bitvh. Horrible lady, MVP husband.

I think every person in the US should be mandated to work in menial service jobs (retail, fast food, ect.) for at least 6 months for a taste of their own medicine. I worked at McDonalds for 2 years (LONG time ago now, like 10 years ago) and got called a bitch, got hit on by a minivan full of horny dudes (i was 19!), had ice cream cones smashed on my hands 3 times, had a large sweet tea thrown at me for NO REASON, and had a dumbass high school guy try to rush charge my window to grab the food bag out of my hands. Oh yeah, also helped report to HR about a coworker dude that kept hitting every woman's butt in the store. Hope he's a sex offender now because that shit was just wrong. Again, like 19 at the time.

I asked my friend who worked in restaurants all his life this. Surprisingly it wasn’t the no-tippers or belligerent drunks like I expected. He said the amount of people who left a one dollar bill or a pile of random coins covered in leftovers, ketchup and maple syrup on the table in order to make the servers dig through it all to make pennies as a tip and get sick enjoyment out of it is alarming...people really suck.

I work at my aunt’s Japanese restaurant, which is somewhat upscale because we live in a small town, so we’re kind of the premier sushi place. An older man comes in, sits at the sushi bar and asks for a menu. I get him the menu, he’s very polite and says “Thank you”. A few minutes go by and as I’m bringing food to a table next to the sushi bar, I hear the same older man speaking with the sushi chef. He then goes on to say “You yellow men make the best sushi.” so casually. He was so comfortable with it too. Like it was a normal thing to say to an Asian person. I was so appalled that I couldn’t even say anything, one of the other servers had to step in and handle it.

There was a older couple that came in regularly, he was nice but she always berated servers and complaining about the food, sending it back multiple times. The last time she pulled that, the husband said she can start cooking her own food at home because he was tired of her behavior. She was quiet the whole time. We never saw her again.

At my very first job in a bakery I was serving a customer and she asked for an item that was on the far side of the wall that contains the baker's racks. I walked over to get the item and a second customer came up and demanded that I give her a cup of espresso. I'm not a very good multitasker and I've gotten better over the years, back then adding a second task to me for a second person was so jarring that I stopped what I was doing and I looked back to the first customer and ask her what she had ordered. Second customer started screaming "HOW DARE YOU IGNORE A PAYING CUSTOMER!" and I was so startled I started crying. The assistant baker, a heavily tatooed latino man, came over to lead me away and get the manager. The second customer started insulting my savior and how he should be deported, upsetting the manager (his 5 nothing red head wife) and lead to a screaming match. I was sent home for the day.

Not a food industry worker, but a hotel receptionist for my University. One lady wanted a queen size bed, claiming that's what was told she would get before making the purchase. That was not true at all. They even showed her what the room looked like beforehand. It had 1 queen size bed and one sofa bed, but I guess a sofa bed isn't okay. Anyways, here I am, having her requesting to have a queen size bed be placed in her room, on a 104.94 cost per night, on a fully booked evening. In situations like this we're told to accommodate them via other discount hotel options in the area and give her a refund for her current and future nights, but she claimed I'm "just trying to get rid of her", and "your service is terrible and you're incompetent". I did exactly as my boss asked me to do, explaining why we can't do that, but she wouldn't budge. This lasted for about an hour over the phone. In the end she wanted to complain to the president of the university directly, and expected I should be the one to make the appointment. I'm not even permitted to do that. She then went on to harass workers on future shifts demanding to make an appointment as well, calling by name for me specifically when I was long gone from my shift for the day. TLDR; lady wanted queen size bed, was offered everything allowed the policy, she says that's not good enough, treats workers like crap, complains for over an hour on the phone, demands to speak to the university president.

Used to work at McDonald’s before I quit in a blaze of glory I posted that story on another comment section. But I always had this lady come in to order a large iced coffee extra cream and granulated sugar not the syrup. I miss heard one time when she came in drunk and ordered the coffee and she saw I had the syrup and not the granulated sugar down for her order and she pointed it out and then proceeded to tell me to strip down to my birthday suit so I could hear better, don’t know how that would help but I later heard she was banned from that McDonald’s location.

I was working as a manager at a quick serve restaurant. The night was almost over, so I was just doing some busy work while we were slow, just before closing. I was cutting croutons when a customer walked up to the counter and blatantly started flirting with the young girl who was just trying to do her job. He asked told her she was pretty and asked is she could teach him Spanish, and was generally making her feel uncomfortable, so I approached him, (with the knife still in my hand). I asked if I could help him, and he said, "nah, I'm just having a chat with this senorita." I got even more pissed. Stepped in front of her and said again, "Can I help you with something?" He again refused. So I said, "Alright. Then get the fuck out of my store." This caught him off guard, and he tried to claim, "I thought the customer was aways right..." I stopped him and said, "Well you haven't bought anything, so get the fuck out of my store before I call the cops." Just because someone is serving you, doesn't mean they are your servant.

I'm in the food service industry... I know all sorts of bad customers and I've only been in food service for about 3 yrs. Want to know what it can be like to feel taken for granted? Work at any food service on the busiest night of the week and I can almost guarantee you'll find at least one customer complaining about something about the staff (especially if the place is short on staff thanks to COVID and what not), food, service, etc and want a refund or something. Who want their food "right away" even when there is clearly over twenty people ahead of them waiting on their food. I had one customer who told me to his face that he didn't want to be a jerk about waiting an hour for his food (which I understood why he was unhappy) but like... there were TWO parties of people ahead of him in the order food was put in... we were short staffed AND those 2 parties of people were the equivalent of a minimum of 30 other individuals waiting for their food; not to mention the place was packed where ever you looked. The douche not only sent back his appetizer complaining about it (even after I told him it was the LAST we had of that appetizer), literally wasting the food - which there was nothing wrong with it at all - he then sent back a burger 20 min. after he got it and said it was burnt, when it clearly wasn't... I had been nice, got his kids snacks when I didn't have to, checked on his food every time he asked and did everything a server could... and by the time I heard about the burger complaint I was done with the guy. His attitude just screamed 'I'm being an arse because I didn't get my food when I wanted it even though I'm not the only person in this place waiting for my food' so I just handed him the bill and got him to pay it... oh, and I forgot to mention that I stayed over fifteen minutes past when I was supposed to actually leave because we were so busy/short staffed and it was a rush hour. I used that excuse to get him to pay his tab; the guy had the gall to shake his head at me - for asking for payment - just so I could leave CLOSE to the hour I was supposed to. Like, who did this guy think he was? The king of England or something? Because despite his words, he was being a huge jerk because he could be. I know this because one of my mangers told him another manager had offered to comp his entire order and he'd just refused. It's like... dude, we were going to give you the food for free because we couldn't get it to you on time and you say no? You still wanna pay for it? What the heck is your deal then? Why are you complaining? Honestly, I was relieved to get out of there and not have to deal with that jerk further. That had been one 8 hr shift that had been going just swell up until him. Not a single complaint from any of the other customers I also had asked to cash out their bill so I could leave. When will people learn that servers aren't personal servers and that they have others to take care of too? TLDR; Jerk customer acts entitled after waiting for food, complains about food when gotten, then acts like it's a sin for me to ask for payment so I can get off my shift after being there over time

Worked as a waitress at Ryan's for 6 years. Some of my most memorable customers 1.Guy tips me $5 but puts in a full glass of water upsidedown on the table. 2. One Sunday we had a 2 ladies (lady A and lady B) in the buffet line making their plates when lady A put the last 5 Pieces of fried chicken on her plate then smirked at lady B who had been patiently waiting to get some. Lady B picks the pan up out of the bar and smacks lady A with it. Knocked her out cold. 3. Woman with 2 kids comes in and orders buffet. Then sends her 5 year old daughter to the tables to steal the tips while her and the other kid were " look out" manager caught them and confronted the Mom. She just laughed at him and asked what was he going to do arrest a little kid ? Real 💩 person. 4. Lady let her kid ( maybe 9 or 10) run around the dessert bar grabbing all the food with his hands , ALL of it. The whole dessert bar had to be closed, all the food thrown away and remade.

Have had several. Cant remember everything in detail. At Starbucks an old lady would come order like a mocha and she would always say “ i want a regular mocha” and every cashier would say “ok, and what size did you want?” She would get fuming mad and would get so upset that we would ask her that and would say “I want a regular mocha!” She expected people to know what size she considers regular. But obviously my idea of regular may be not the same. At first I thought, maybe she wants a grande. No this lady would always call it a regular mocha and treat the cashiers horrible for asking her what size. When you say regular mocha, we probably think you just wanna make sure it’s not a peppermint mocha, most people don’t assume she is referring to size, she would do this every time, get mad, give everybody a hard time and almost be close to yelling. She wanted a small mocha, but would never tell you and if you asked “you mean a grande??..” she would get pissed again. But she likely has dementia like on a serious note. Another customer I had obese guy, obese wife, obese kid. They ordered like 3 fried appetizers and like heavy pasta entrees. I was surprised they ordered 3 appetizers and thought this dude is gona give himself a heart attack or diabetes. Cant remember everything but they would rude and the wife paid in cash, telling me to give her back the change. I found that odd because she basically had the exact dollar amount, but only a few cents over. I come over and sometimes people don’t notice me until I’m right in front of them, and I hand her the change, but right when I do this, the husband is legit putting insulin in his arm. And he almost flinched since I scared him for popping out of no where. That’s just dangerous to randomly be giving yourself an injection in a public setting. They left and didn’t tip either, I get people don’t tip but don’t be the most demanding customer and treat people shitty, go treat your mother like that instead

On our trip to Universal Studios in Florida earlier this year, my grandmother found what she thought was a Mexican restaurant and wanted to try it. We were hungry and it sounded good so we went. Our waiter did the usual welcome and asked about drinks and appetizers, my grandmother demanded chips and salsa. He brought our drinks and her chips but with no salsa and she noticed. She began to argue on why he didn’t bring what she ordered and the poor guy explained that salsa isn’t an item they have on their menu but that they have guacamole and offered to bring it on the house. My grandmother got mad saying she doesn’t like guacamole and that she wants salsa, that if you have chips you should have salsa. We did our best to cool her off but that didn’t work and he asked what we wanted to eat, she refused to order anything else, telling him that he couldn’t even get a simple thing right. I have never felt so embarrassed in my life. The food was really good and she tried to take ours, we told her no and that she had her chance. When we left I wanted to pretend I left something to go back in and apologize to the waiter on her behalf, but I sadly couldn’t. She also started an argument with me that she read a science study that wind turbines are killing whales. I tried to get more information, she said the Midwest turbines are killing whales and that I wouldn’t know that because I’m not as knowledgeable on the subject. I’m planning on studying marine science in college. I did look up the article, there is no direct evidence that “Offshore Wind Farms” correlate to the death of whale pods. There is some evidence that the offshore wind farms can disrupt fish migrations, which cause whales to move away, but there is no evidence to link whale deaths to wind turbines.

Okay I have one, but I wasn't working, I was in line and over heard it. So, my dad and I were at a Starbucks inside of a tom thumb. We were behind this Asian lady, she was having trouble ordering cause she didn't know English very well. The employee there is the most patient and the nicest person ever, for privacy reasons we will call her Jess. The Asian lady (let's call her Karen) shows Jess the text that her friend sent, it's the drinks they wanted. Jess took the order and started making it. We were next in line waiting at the front, so we heard the whole thing pretty easily. Jess finished Karen's drink and said "Okay go ahead and try that to see if it's correct. I can remake it.", Karen takes a sip and says with a sour face "No this is not right, make it again". So Jess is making the drink, my dad and I feel so bad and I still feel bad cause we should have done something. So Jess gave that drink to Karen and asked for her to taste it. Karen said "No it's not right" just as she said that another guy who worked at Starbucks came in from his break, we'll name him Max. Karen says "Oh Max is here, Max does it right.". So Max is making her drinks, Jess is taking our order. We are seeing Jess physically shake while taking our order, I saw her look at Karen and look back at the screen and shake her head lol. Jess never broke down, she stayed patient the entire time, she deserves a raise. So Karen made them make 3 different drinks, AS FAR AS WE KNOW! We left before Karen left cause our order was simple, just a few green teas. Jess is still working at that same Starbucks and does an amazing job, we go there everyday and she's always this cheery, funny, all around great person. As we were leaving the store my dad said, "We should wait and follow her to see where she works" (it was morning). I said "I agree", we waited a bit and saw she went into a massage place right next to the tom thumb. My dad said "We should wear tiny cameras so we can record shit like that, follow those people and go be bitches to them at their work and then post it on KZfaq.". I said it was a great idea, but we never did it. My dad used it work retail so he felt especially bad for Jess cause he understood how she felt. He said it's a terrible feeling.

Hockey players are the best 28:54. I heard this story where henrik zetterburg (former Detroit red wings team captain and center) went to a restaurant and payed everybody’s bill and tipped all the waitstaff

Church people who behave as though they are doing you a favor... running your tail off, snapping fingers, getting upset if you are not there at every second...never mind that you have other tables. Leaving the bill in cash and all in ones. I'm the son of a retired deacon and I wouldn't dare treat a server like that.

Years ago I had a customer come into a major grocery store chain (not Wal-Mart) on Thanksgiving morning. When he realized we were completely out of fresh turkeys (we had been out for weeks) he literally cursed me out like I did it intentionally to ruin his day. He stormed off. He returns about 15 minutes later still swearing and cursing me out. He call his wife she supposedly found a store that still had fresh turkeys. But the name of the the employee he gave me was not any employee at the deli or the meat department. I finally got him to calm down enough to call his wife to verify where she called. It was a competitor grocery store chain that had it. He never apologized‐ but he did walk out with his tail between his legs.

Well today I learned why wait staff look anxious when I ask for more half and half things. It usually goes away when I point out there's only French Vanilla in the little bowl, but it was still confusing.

Was an assistant manager at Panda Express in high school. Had this one guy and girl come to the drive thru shortly before closing. Ok, no big deal, last customer of the night I suppose. I’m on the second window, btw our store didn’t have headsets, rather, we had speakers around the store and a big microphone by the drive thru for taking orders, so I could hear the order being placed. They order something fairly simple, it was like 18 bucks total or something. Anyways, they pull around, and when they get to the first window, they try to convince the poor girl cashing them out that the total the food is was not the total they were told at the speaker, and the guy goes absolutely ballistic, saying things like “How can you be so stupid to not just listen to me!” “This is why you work fast food, you’re worthless” “No wonder you’re parents don’t love you!” This girl shuts the window and runs into the lobby crying her eyes out. The guy closing the lobby that night comes to me explaining what happened, so I go to the first window, where these people still are in their crappy old chevrolet waiting angrily. I told them to get the hell out of my drive thru and to go screw themselves for talking to my employee that way. They told me that my life was pathetic because I’m the assistant manager at a panda express working for 17 an hour. I just closed the window and flipped them off, ushering for them to leave. I lock the window and put a piece of wood over it (standard procedure when we close to prevent a breaking and entering. These people stop at the second window and start honking their horn like there was no tomorrow, meanwhile the girl on back cash is still crying in the lobby. I locked the second window and put a piece of wood over that one as well, but they park in the front and start BANGING on our lobby doors telling us to open up. I start dialing the police and hold the phone up to the glass to show them that I will call the cops if they don’t leave now. They end up leaving in the end after throwing a drink at my doors. God, customers really are the worst.

This wasn't me, but when I worked at a soda shop my sophomore year of high school, one of my coworkers got caught between hammer and nail with a massive rush, the kind that lasts 2-3 hours without so much as a second of spare time. One of my coworkers, Sadie, had this soccer mom order about $20 worth of products, then try and use a giant Ziplock bag stuffed to the brim with coins to pay. She also had the audacity to tell Sadie that she wanted exact change. All this happened while the drive-thru was overflowing with cars and orders piling up.

I stopped working in the front of house a while ago, because I hated interacting with customers. Worst thing that's happened to me since becoming a cook was someone ordered a sauteed salad. Like, iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, etc. Cooked up in a pan with some oil. 🤢

I feel like they don't know how to order a stir fry and sauteed salad was the best they came up with. I can't blame them though since a stir fry is a sauteed salad in a way since it's mixed veggies fried in a pan with some kind of protein.

A little after I graduated high school back in the mid 2000's, I got a seasonal job at Tim Hortons at Christmas time that year and from working that one (and only) job in the restaurant industry I was blown away how "pigish" alot of people can be figuratively and literally in public.
