Restoration of Very TIRED and Rusty AXE

11 ай бұрынHello folks! Today I will show you the restoration of a very "tired axe". It's hard to imagine how many times it was sharpened and used. But I'll give it a second chance and he'll be as good as new! Well, let's start the restoration.
The first duty I did was to remove the old piece of the axe handle, the wire and the rusty wedge. I placed the axe in a rust remover, after cleaning I placed the axe in warm water with soda to neutralize the acid.
This axe turned out to have no cutting edge left at all. And I decided to forge a new one. To do this, I cut off the rest of the cutting edge from the axe and welded a piece of file with the help of a welding machine.
Then I went to my friend's workshop where I forged a new cutting edge for the axe, carried out the normalization process three times and tempered the axe in oil. The hardening went great!
After that, I made new descents at the axe, made a new axe handle from beech and conducted an interesting test for you! Please don't forget to share this video and leave your comments! Thanks for your attention

A crack in the handle like that always gets worse with use. Temporizing measures are linseed oil to hopefully make the wood less vulnerable to moisture infiltration, wood glue to hopefully seal the wood and create a bond, but in the end, the stress of chopping, and a moist environment in most wood cutting settings, will open up the handle over time. Beautiful work on the axe head, very nicely done.

I knew right away that this restoration would be fantastic. The axe is not too rusty, more of a patina. All you had to do was give it the perfect handle. Plus a whole new edge!

Вот это я понимаю реставрация по взрослому. Все в олдовом стиле наших дедов. Сточился топор, понес кузнецу наварил и опять пользуйся. А то как посмотришь берут нормальный топор и делают из него кастрата, типа модного бородатого. Мастеру мое почтение, повторюсь все в олдовом, техничном и рабочем стиле. Инструмент обрел вторую жизнь и продолжит служить. За субтитры спасибо отдельное, читаю внимательно)

Из похожего кованного топора замучался клин выбивать гребенчатый, а когда начали резать кромку для наварки, испугался, что пошли на поводу модных блогеров, которые непонятно что из рабочих топоров делают, успокоился когда приварили напильник.Да вам кузнечное ремесло в руки тоже просится, с вашей точностью и твердой рукой.Приятный контент.Спасибо за видео.

Another great video. Thank you. Have you ever tried boiling rusty steel in water? It dies a good job of removing some of the rust - and no chemical(s) to have to dispose of.

Greetings! Thank you for your attention, no, I've never tried because it's so easy to lose tempering, an axe in oil or in water that hangs very hot. Although I may be wrong

@@ScrewsAndTools Privyet. Interesting. I’m talking about a quick boil no more than 5 minutes in water. I’ve used it on horseshoes (made from both cast iron and steel) and various hand tools (various metals), drill bits (various metals) and as “another tool to use”, for a first pass on heavy rust, I find it works pretty well.
