Believe it or not, when I was a child about 60 years ago, these superb little guns could be seen in use in fairs and amusement arcades - in England!!! I remember using them several times in a place called the Kursaal, in Southend--on-Sea. Great fun. Times change though, and the only guns (and knives) we see in Southend now are those carried by the 'new Londoners' who visit. Drug gangs, mainly. Great to see a blast from my past on here. Great job!

Try using fine (600 grit) sandpaper on blocks for the the pre blueing polish. Some people swear it produces finer results on new guns, but what I will say is it makes restoration a whole lot easier because you can't detect the pits or scratches that are too deep to remove. Mirror polishing also highlights inconsistencies in the flatness of a surface too, so I really would say give it a shot, especially if you do a military restoration.

This was wonderful! I got to shoot my grandpa’s Remington .22 pump recently , looked just like the one in the video except his has a full octagon barrel. My sister and her husband have it at their house in the country. I’m 68 now and that gun worked as smooth and easy as it did when I first fired it as a boy of 8. Just as accurate as when it was new. What a joy. Terrific video and beautiful work you do.

I'll give you credit for better than it was, but I'll have to buck the trend of the majority of comments declaring the restoration to be superb. The factory guns did not have a high gloss blue, they actually looked fairly coarse, like about 220 grit, you can see that on vintage rifles that are in good condition. You were being careful with the buff wheels, so as to not round over lines. When you get hold of an octagon barrel the buffer is a liability, abrasive paper and draw filing are your friend there. The best way to prep the metal is the old fashioned way, draw file the sides of the receiver to get the "X"out and leave the surface flat. You have to do the entire side of the receiver to keep all the dimensions equal and the lines straight. Lots of work I know but that is what it takes to make it look right. The power sander left very discernible unevenness, a wavy look. Draw filing and use of abrasive paper on a block leaves the surface squared up and crisp lines, as they should be. The ejector port side of the receiver looks like it got nothing, lots of pits and dings, draw file and abrasive paper there would have made quick work of those age marks. I got into the habit of wire brushing the final sanded metal, using a .007 inch diameter wire wheel on the bench grinder, leaves an aver so pleasing metal texture...but it is not the original factory finish sadly, still I do it because I like the look. There was a time when WD-40 was avoided as the post blue solution soak, the use of a light mineral oil was preferred, something to do with some degree of potential blue removal by the WD-40. I ended up using Chevron turbine oil, a 10 wt. mineral material oil. The stock I could see had oil soak. That can be remedied with soaking in a large dish or pan of acetone or lacquer thinner and then airing, use of hair dryer will also pull the acetone/ oil out more quickly, which can then be blotted off and again rinsed off with the next acetone dip. The oil contaminated wood is mostly irrelevant as you stained it very dark and finished with linseed, so that finish can be trusted to hide the oil and will have durability on the oil soaked wood. I have had really bad oil soaked stocks that I even packed in baking soda then cooked on low in the oven...works pretty darn good to get most of the oil out.

BTW, the takedown screw has a dished slot, so a coin can be used. And it should be retained in the upper receiver.

0:20 I have one of these in my closet. Mine's less worn out, and has more features like a flip-up site that's adjustable

@@TheKinzlerBros actually, you'd be the perfect person to ask this question. My house burned down and I rescued this rifle from a closet. I've always been afraid to shoot it for fear that it was warped from the fire However, one day it occurred to me, the wood is perfectly fine, so if it didn't get hot enough to hurt the wood, I can't imagine the metal became warped. Do you think it would be fine to try and clean and fire?

I remember shooting one of these at my church carnival back in the 50’s when I was 8 or 9 yrs old. I believe it fired shorts or cab caps.

We've the very same Remington in the family that belonged to my Great Grandfather (unfortunately it went to a cousin, and he and I don't get along). Would have really liked to have it and get it restored, but that's unlikely. Did buy one of the Rossi Gallery Guns, and the Grandkids love to shoot it, and so far, it's been a decent reproduction.

Have one of these. Pre 1900. It belonged to my great grandfather, my father and then me. Needs work as the shell casing gets jammed in the chamber and won't eject. Somebody did a halfass repair that did not work. I would like to have it repaired some day.
