At last! here is a restoration video after a long time just on public demand.
This is the most rusty cleaver I have ever restored, this antique butcher cleaver was send to us from Netherland by one of our supporter Stuw, his instagram @Stuwhoutje. He found it with the help of a metal detector. I did not make any big changes to this cleaver. I did not smoothen those big holes from corrosion and at the end I like that antique look of the cleaver.
Restoration:
First of all I removed thick layers of rust with gentle hammering then I choosen Electrolysis for removing deeper rust because it is a safer and non damaging way of removing rust. After many hours of electrolysis I simply do a sandblasting for a good looking surface.
Now time to Reshape it using belt sander and files While filing the surface I felt that it is still good tempered and ready to make the bevel I used a wet surface grinder to not destroy its temper. And after sanding now we have a razor sharp blade.
Next I tried a new way to give it a royal look and securing it from further corrosion.
Brass brushing: Simply we heat up cleaver with a gas torch and brush it with a brass wire brush using an angle grinder.
Now time to make its handle. I used brass, resin and wood to make its handle. After blackening and smoothening the wood and a gloss finish it looked good.
For its protection I made a leather cover. I used a wax hardened black leather
to make this fancy cover. And now it is ready to beautify the walls.

It gained the mass of the oxygen as it rusted, so it makes sense that it can look like it's losing a lot but still have plenty of material left to work with.

Observation: I was curious about the date of this artifact until they said the spine is still hard. If it were medieval, the edge would likely be hardened carbon steel with the rest of the mass of the blade being made of a less valuable form of steel or iron. So it's probably not as old as it looks, but was instead not well preserved. Honestly, anything more than 50 years old in good shape is a rarity.

the result was beautiful, the only thing I would change is the round handle, I don't think any knife should have a handle like this because when cutting it can rotate the blade and cause a serious injury. Putting that aside, I would love to have that cleaver, it´s just gorgeous

Nice job. It would’ve been nice to be able to smooth out the whole thing but in the end sometimes you just can’t. So the fact that you got the blade sharp again and that you got rid of all the rest and made it good again that’s pretty impressive even if it looks a little bit spotty.

Many of the tools are very dangerous to use with gloves, like a grinding wheel. If the glove catches then it pulls your hand or arm in. Without a glove, you get scrape or a tiny burn from a spark instead of losing your hand.

Well, it's not that good as it must to be. Too much metal density was just got left, it's not polished to a flat, cool look (cause it will be as thinner as razor-sharp), so it's not a good deal te restoring this one, instead of making a whole-new device (just imo)

I've been using an old trash can full of a mixture of water and molasses as a rust remover and I'm pretty happy with it. takes a few weeks of soaking to be effective, but I've been using the same trashcan for 7 years and I've never had to drain it or move it out of the corner of the barn. the only downside is the molasses smell when you pull the piece out. I definitely wear my coveralls when I hose that stuff off. it's super convenient because I'll find random rusty stuff and just dump it in there and forget about it, so usually when I do pull something out I have 10 or 15 other little pieces to clean up and seal all together.

I scored one from the 1700’s for 50 bucks. It’s got hammer marks at the top but other than patina is completely rust free. Since it’s going to be a wall hanger, I’m going to use a mild solvent like gun cleaner and cotton rags and the. Put a shinny edge on it. I have no idea show it survived all these years with barely any damage or aurface rust to speak of. It was dated by the makers mark and by a friend of the family who is a butcher. One of the nicest blades I own. You did exceptionally well on this one!!
