Winter prep work continues in the potager with us building a new raised bed from some scrap wood. We then start work on our big project for the year - restoring the barn. The wall is not in great shape so first up is to strengthen it from both sides. Even Rebecca gets in on the action. Thanks to Lingoda for sponsoring this video - upping our French level is a big challenge for both of us this year. If you fancy joining in on the challenge find out more here: try.lingoda.com/Livinginthelo...
We've had quite the run of illnesses so far this year and this week was no different with both children getting chicken pox. It means the year has got off to a slower start than we would have liked which can be frustrating at times but that's just how these things go.
However it really feels like Spring is round the corner, the daffodils are popping out and it is nearly time to start planting seeds.

Welcome to Living in the Loire, we are a young family in rural France, renovating previously poorly converted barns. We aim to do most of the work ourselves, being as frugal and as eco as possible.
We are learning on the job and we hope to share the skills we pick up along the way. When possible we will take you on a tour of the region (the garden of France) sharing with you the numerous chateaux, towns and markets.

I so enjoy watching your videos. They are calming and interesting. It's especially nice to see the children get "involved" in the work you're doing. It's wonderful that they will have outdoor lives along with their parents. I really feel for you that you've had to deal with what seem to be ongoing health issues. Gut issues can be, to say the least, challenging. Especially if the entire family is experiencing them. Argh!!! You are a lovely family!

We happened to be at the beach for christmas holidays when my children got chicken pox. Because they were "swimming" every day, they didn't suffer with the itchiness. Perhaps put some salt in the bath and washing them may help. Just an idea. Always good to get these illnesses over and done with whilst they are small I was told. The barn will be a big job but well worth while. Take care, best wishes.

Such a gentle loving family. I love watching the repointing, and as the barn is my favourite building, all the better. Love the birdhouse near that first buttress. I've had good results with corrugated clear polycarbonate as a roof cover for a sun-house and an outhouse. Just easily screws to beams, and is quite robust, though have never had it tested against snow. You must be pleased with your compost, how rich did it look! Marigolds are good for keeping away cabbage moths, plus I like their vivid colour. The Butterflies will be lovely. I hope your chickens survived the winter and the flu, and I hope you are all soon in good health ready to enjoy spring. My best wishes, especially for your language lessons. I freaked when he got to "2015" ... ah, deux mille ...
@LivingintheLoire
@LivingintheLoire Жыл бұрын
Thank you. That's great to hear you've had such success with polycarbonate, I think it might be the way to go. This area seems to very rarely get snow so I don't think it would be overly tested from that point of view. Yes, v happy with how the compost is looking!

Nice VLOG. Love to see the work you are doing. Good luck with getting rid of the squitch (couch grass). In 50 years of gardening my wife and I have never succeeded. Every tiny scrap of root you leave behind becomes a new plant :/ But it helps to try... Good idea to turn those bays into greenhouses to extend the season. Be careful maing access points through the buttresses though as it could weaken them and you do not want that wall falling down. Plus the space at the back will be more use fr growing than for a walkway. Perhaps you can make a compund door in the front where a low one 3-4 feet high opens normally and then another "door" in the sloping roof hinges upwards or folds onto itself. It will get very hot in there in the summe, so make sure you have plenty of ventilation. Good luck.

For the raised beds, having watched a huge number of these types of builds, and having done some of my own, putting wire mesh at the bottom is highly recommended, to avoid moles and the like nipping in, eating whatever you are growing and then off again, without leaving a trace, until you try to harvest... Great video, and love the vibe of the lifestyle.

This felt like a charming medieval homestead. Wonderful. Growing flowers for dyes will be great fun. I changed my glass on my greenhouse roof to polycarbonate sheets. Really a great success . It refracts light and keeps in the warmth! And while I am here don’t skimp on the gate width by your new bug homes. You will not regret it! For chicken pox itch: put oatmeal in a woman’s stocking, run a warm bath water, tie stocking around water spout so that it hangs down in water and let child lie down in water. You put the oatmeal in the stocking so you won’t have all that gunk in your tub.. Good Luck!

As a microbiologist (I love your ethos) I wonder why your children got chickenpox. There's a very good vaccine out there to prevent that I only hope that they get the other childhood vaccines, so there are no problems in the future.
@LivingintheLoire
@LivingintheLoire Жыл бұрын
Hi Paulette, it's not a standard vaccine in France or the UK. They've had all the obligatory ones obviously. I guess because for the vast majority of children chicken pox isn't serious so the cost of vaccine/administering it isn't worth it? Plus it helps build their immune systems? (You'd know more about that than me)
