The Commission is concerned about certain “myths” and misconceptions in the sector surrounding restrictive practices.
Following on from the discussion in our first webinar in February - which addressed myths surrounding seclusion, environmental restraint, mechanical restraint, and physical restraint - this session focused on the use of chemical restraint and also covered the legislative requirements, and importance and value of tailored behaviour support plans.
The use of restrictive practices, and the supporting legislative requirements, have undergone a range of comprehensive changes over the past few years, and we are aware that these changes, in aiming to minimise the widespread use of restrictive practices, can cause confusion and reluctance to implement some of these measures even when there is a potential benefit to the consumer.
Unpacking some of these myths to ensure that providers and clinical caregivers develop a clearer understanding and approach to Restrictive Practices.
