So that's it. Foundation year is DONE! It's been a blast, it's been intense and I've loved every second. I cannot wait to start physics in September. If you have any questions please do ask. I started this channel to try and answer all the questions I had (and still have) regarding retraining and I hope I've answered some!

About Me
I'm Hannah, a 29 year old student studying on the Foundation Engineering and Physical Sciences degree at the University of Nottingham.
For a long time, I've wanted to retrain as a physicist. Even while I was doing my first degree in 2008, it was something I had started thinking about more and more. Last September, I decided to throw caution to the wind in order to follow my passion.
Before I took the first step, I spent many years trying to find stories of people who had made similar changes, but there wasn't all that much to go on. I had so many questions that I couldn't find answers to, so I decided that when I began studying I would make videos to try and answer some of those questions. So that's what I'm doing! Oh and it can't hurt to brush up on my speaking and presenting skills while I'm at it.

I'm decided to go onto the open plus scheme and do 2 or3 years with the open university part time and then 2 years full time at Bristol to get a chemistry degree. Thanks for the kind words! I'm working on a few videos at the moment so hopefully there will be more content soon :) Good luck with the Open Plus route. I looked at that a few years ago, but decided I needed the discipline from full time study, at least with the foundation year. You're right about finances though, no route is particularly helpful when it comes to that! My brother is at Bristol and he loves it there, so sounds like you've made an excellent choice :)

Hi Chloe! Yay more people like me haha! I'm excited for you :) Have you already got a degree? Self-funding sucks (and I am not really self funding all that much now, just covering living costs), but don't let it hold you back if you can find a way. I checked out your channel btw, it's lovely. If you start studying are you going to vlog about that too? I'd definitely watch :D

That has been my dream since a young age, becoming a physicist always looking up to people like Steven Hawkings. Schools take you on trips to Oxford, Cambridge and top universities but never guide you and tell you how much work you need to put in to get to that place. It hurts that I wasted so many years of school pissing my free education away, not knowing how to get to a top university; I had nothing to aim for . None of my parents went to university and it seems that schools assume that you know how to get to university and assume you understand the importance of your GCSES, etc. Good luck to you!

I'm following the pathway to Medicine at the moment, transitioning from work to study and completing the foundation programme in New Zealand next year (I'm a kiwi). Watching your videos as a mature student has really resonated with me on every level. I currently work in the corporate world and have found myself reevaluating my life at the age of 28. @@HannahColemanV thank you for answering! I have a college diploma in mining engineering. So now I wish to enroll to the bachelor degree. Though I have worked as an engineer already, I still have exactly the same concerns regarding math. My first degree is foreign languages, so, I had never thought I could be "technical". However, I it is supportive to see another person with the same concerns, but the one who is not afraid to go ahead.
@HannahColemanV

@@Rocky-vu3hh A lot of similarities there then! Maths is a language so you should have no trouble! At least that's how I thought of it. It's all about the practice and sometimes you only understand why things work in that context after you've done a million examples. Ultimately you won't know until you give it a try! Good luck :)

Hey, that's great! What are you going to study? My original degree was East European Studies. I'd say it's helpful to have been through the level of education before and knowing how to write essays will be very useful at some point, but it definitely hasn't helped me with the science!

@SophieLaureen98 Жыл бұрын
@@ldetonimacedo Hi, yes i moved from winchester and now im in sheffield :) Basically you have to apply as normal through ucas now before the jan deadline and then complete your foundation year, providing you get the grades you have to send them over to your new uni that you want to go to and they'll accept you. Once youve been accepted you have to ask for a form from your current uni that basically confirms your withdrawal from the uni and then its all done and you organise accomodation etc as normal :) When i got my grades sheffield hallam didnt accept the transcript originally so i had to ask winchester to confirm that they are my final grades in writting. As soon as i sent over the evidence to sheffield they accepted my grades and my place was confirmed :) I hope this helped! Goodluck x

Hey Hannah! I'm going to start a foundation year in physics and maths. I'm not the best at either of these subjects, and didn't study these at A-level. Would you recommend learning the content before starting uni? Also, I'm so worried that I'll fail, can you recommend that I do anything before starting?
@HannahColemanV
@HannahColemanV 6 жыл бұрын
Hey! Great to hear you'll be starting a foundation year! Where are you doing yours? If it's anything like Nottingham, then it won't matter that you haven't studied maths and physics at A Level. Before I started last year, I had a C in maths and science at GCSE that I did in 2003/2004 and I didn't particularly love either of those subjects at school. On my foundation year there were about 100 of us, all with different qualifications and abilities. The year was very intense, but if you turn up to lectures, ask questions and do the homework etc., you'll be absolutely fine. Be prepared to put in some hard work. It might seem difficult at times, but that doesn't mean you won't be able to do it. Practice makes perfect! If you want to do some practice before you begin to ease your mind, then I recommend working through some GCSE maths revision books and doing lots of questions to get your brain back in gear.

I wanted to study my undergraduate degree which is bsc biotechnology in uk . Since my score is less , the universities are asking me to do a foundation year. Is foundation year difficult? Please help me out.
@HannahColemanV
@HannahColemanV 6 жыл бұрын
Hi :) A foundation year is there to help you bridge the gap between A Levels and University (or whatever you did before applying to uni). I found it really useful to do a foundation year, but I can't really comment on whether each one is difficult or not as it depends on the course and your situation. If you want to study a particular degree at a particular university, then it's a great way to get onto the course. Good luck!

could you resit an exam during your foundation year if you'd liked to?
@HannahColemanV
@HannahColemanV 4 жыл бұрын
The Elementary Particle Depends on the course but at Nottingham you get one resit if you fail an exam (less than 40%) and you can redo modules or the whole year if you have extenuating circumstances, but you can really just choose to resit (unless you deliberately fail, which I’d never recommend). Hope that helps!

Can you explain to those of us not from the UK what is a 'foundation year'? It sounds like doing a lot of basics that would be useful in most science specialties.
@HannahColemanV
@HannahColemanV 6 жыл бұрын
That's a really good question. A foundation year is usually an intensive one year course that is equivalent to studying A Levels. It is for students that may have been out of education for a while and for those who may not have the right subjects. For example, if you wanted to study history and then changed your mind and decided to study physics, you might find it more convenient to do a degree with a foundation year attached to it, rather than changing your A Level subjects and starting again.There are lots of different types of foundation year, so not just science, but in the arts and humanities subjects too.
