I've avoided making this video for ages, but it's done now! Hopefully some people will find it useful, and now I can get back to making more fun and positive videos...

Well done. My first degree was theoretical physics. Physics gets much better as you get more advanced. Almost everybody has "imposter syndrome" when they start math and science degrees and a lot of people screw up or fail the exams or get their confidence badly dented--even people who later turned out to be exceptional. The first year can be the hardest (it was for me) and it can be a very difficult transition, but you do gain a lot of experience. At the later stages of the degree you can get into quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, gravitation, astrophysics etc., etc. And you then really begin to learn about how the universe works. Most people are not aware of just how much has been learned and discovered now, and much of it is incredible. Physics and mathematics are hard but probably no harder than other things like being a musician or an athlete--the bottom line is a lot of hard work/study and practice and of course a passion for what you are doing. A background in both physics and literature would be very impressive. All the best.

Thank you for your lovely comment! I totally agree that it's about putting in that hard work and practicing until your head melts :p I'm hoping more people will see that maths and science are subjects that can be (somewhat) mastered - that it's not about being a genius, it's more about interest and hard work :D And perhaps even that the arts and sciences work well together!

Yes, it's a total myth that you have to be "a genius" to pursue physics or mathematics. A lot of kids get told this in school and get discouraged or lose confidence. You certainly need some intelligence/ability but the bottom line is consistent hard work and determination to learn the subject. Even those people/professors in the fields who are actually considered genius still put in a lot of work and study. Einstein worked for over 10 years every day to construct general relativity, years of which were a dead end . But just a monster amount of work and effort--it was not easy for him. Confusion and frustration is a big part of studying and research in math and physics at all levels as it takes time to digest. But then you can suddenly find that you understand it. It is also very important not to overwork though and get a balance between studying/working and not burning out; staying physically and mentally healthy, eating right, sleeping, sports/hobbies/exercise taking breaks. I always found that short bursts of effort, studying 30 mins to 60 mins were best then a break. The arts/humanities and physics/math are not dissimilar but require different kinds of thinking. Jacob Bronowski (google him) called physics "the greatest work of art of the 20th century" and that "art and science are two aspects of the one mind".And Shelley probably wanted to be an astronomer: "Heaven's ebon vault studded with stars unutterably bright...":)

Congrats on your results, Hannah! I am so pleased for you that your hard work has paid off! And to add, I think January of first year was a period of time that I found the most difficult over the whole 4 years - I remember having a breakdown over N2E and I seriously began questioning my life choices haha. I've gotta be honest and say that it wasn't the only time that I panicked throughout the course, but it definitely becomes easier to cope with as you go along (I went on many trips to Hobbycraft for some post-exams-crafting-retail-therapy). You 100% are not the only person feeling the things that you spoke about in your video, and I am glad to hear you are feeling more positive now!

Congratulations on finishing your first year! (and potentially Happy 30th judging by the Card on the shelf). I can definitely relate to the impostor syndrome. Thinking maybe I made it in by a technicality. Ultimately I justify it but thinking, "hey, they're stuck with me now, and they want me to finish just as much as I do". It's reassuring to know that others feels the same way, ultimately, it seems that University life is more about persistence than anything else. I have to say I'm quite envious that you are studying physics at the moment; I was reading the news today and saw that there are plans to build 4 spaceports in the UK in the next few years. Would be an amazing opportunity for a physics graduate.

Well done Hannah! I'm glad you've gained your confidence over the course of the year, I know you can do it! In first year I felt a bit alienated because half the cohort had done computing and half had done further maths and I'd done neither, so I know how it feels to struggle. I wish you all the best for the next few years 😊

First of all....this video confirms you are really brave, Hannah! I hope you really know you are not alone at all, many students share the same thoughts! I felt the same as well. Lastly, I know it's cliché and all but it's also true - the most important thing (this can't be stressed enough) is to believe you CAN do it and fight back, if you believe on that - you WILL achieve your objectives.. and it seems you got that! PS: I love our University!! Wish you all success! Miguel Aresta, UoN student (BEng Aerospace Engineering), course rep and course ambassador

Congratulations on finishing your first year! I've made the decision to go into engineering after my architecture degree and you've pretty much talked about all the things I'm worrying about 🤦. Just a quick question, did you find any time to join a society or club is well? I'm planning to return to lacrosse but do think my physical ability might not be up to par 🙄

Ooh engineering! That's really great! I haven't found time to join a society/club yet (but as a keen footballer, I'm hoping to get involved in futsal next year). However, running is a big part of my life (especially when things get stressful), and I am involved in lots of outreach stuff, so there's definitely time to do the things you love! Good luck and feel free to get in touch if you have any questions... Oh, I really like your videos btw :)

Hey Hannah! Couple of quick questions... What where your entry requirements to get onto the foundation year and, also, did your previous home have anything to do with physics? Nice work so far, hope 2nd year is going well :)
@HannahColemanV
@HannahColemanV 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Kyle! My requirements were BBB at A Level and Bs in maths and science/physics at GCSE but I actually have BBC at A Level and Cs in maths and science at GCSE. They take it on a case by case basis. I think the fact I'd started an OU maths module and already had a degree helped. What do you mean did my previous home have anything to do with physics? Do you mean my upbringing? Not really... I loved astronomy as a kid and my mum was a horticulturist but that's about it. Why do you ask? What are your plans? Second year is an absolute blast so far! :)

@@kylelowe993 Ah that makes more sense. No, my career before had nothing to do with physics really. I was a teaching assistant for GCSE Science for a year or so but that's about it. Are you thinking about doing a foundation year?
@kylelowe993

@@HannahColemanV I'm torn between foundation year and distance learning A Levels. The latter is cheaper overal, but not sure how it will be after being out of education for 7 years! How did you find it going back?
@HannahColemanV
@HannahColemanV 5 жыл бұрын
@@kylelowe993 Distance learning is way cheaper, but I found it difficult as I worked full time alongside my studies and didn't get to be immersed in the subject, and the right learning environment is a really important factor for me. Foundation year is great as it gives you the full university experience, but personally I felt it didn't set me up as well as A Levels might have for the first year of a physics degree. Coming back to education after years (it was 13 years since I'd formally studied maths and five years since I graduated from uni for me) is hard, and you really have to push to make things work for you, as you're not a typical undergrad (whatever that means), and you're lecturers aren't used to dealing with that. But there are many positives too as you can use your experience to your advantage and it's incredibly rewarding doing something you love and that challenges you every day. I don't regret a thing.
