You can use an MLS gasket with the sleeves protruding. if fact we do. we leave our sleeves up about 3 though on a Stock Aluminum block. at 15+ to 1 compression we were constantly having compression leak into the cooling system and vise versa. We used Copper gaskets and stainless ring etc. The MLS Gasket and 3 though sleeve protrusion cured that issue.

Appreciate it Steve! I love the videos. Keep it coming. I read somewhere blocks want a RA of 50-60 RA, maybe i misread. No MFR surfaces ...? dam

In the beginning I could not find a good machineshop for engines after a German fellow closed his doors in retirement. Never found a good one within 100 miles. Can't build engines without good machining. Built a lot of junk that lasted and made good power however. You however are a perfectionist. Thats what they called me. Make junk and noone comes to you. But they are impressed with shiny metal .

Wow 10ra is pretty polished up. Would expect maybe 30ra at most.

Steve could you explain what the procedure is to resurface the head when top fuel hoops are already installed?
@Hitman-ds1ei3 жыл бұрын
Are you referring to MLS suitable finish or composite as well

Is there a reason you only attach the block to the mandrel on the outer bearings? Inners just aren't needed? How do you get your zero for a head, to make sure it isn't crooked? Block is obvious, you base it on the crank.
@Mike444603 жыл бұрын
Just asking, I can see the deck being 45 degrees from the main saddle using, your term, but the actual deck height is from the center line of the crankshaft. In addition would you not line hone the block before cutting the deck or are you only interested in having a very good finish on the deck surfaces?
@randywl89252 жыл бұрын
How do you orient the head I the fixture before machining? Valve guides or the existing deck surface? ......or?
@brentonk4613 жыл бұрын
doesn't matter how shiny the surface finish is, if the machine being used is worn out, and out of square, and the block or cylinder head surface is Not flat.

Could the difference in the flatness be from temperature change. To say if the head was milled at 200° or room temperature. Didn't know if it would make that much of a deal.
@stevemorrisracing3 жыл бұрын
very unlikely I see what you are getting at.
@HorsepowerHeadquarters4543 жыл бұрын
Looks like someone used 80 grit and glass to do a bench surfacing lol.
@brentonk4613 жыл бұрын
You might be surprised at how flat you can get it doing it that way.
@HorsepowerHeadquarters4543 жыл бұрын
@@brentonk461 yup I am a believer in it, but you don't use 80 grit lol. 320 or better usually unless someone knows of the perfect grit to use.
@immanutt4442 Жыл бұрын
I concur ... Cometic requires a Ra (roughness average) that was close to 280 - 320 grit for their brand MLS head gaskets

Even factory Ford Ecoboost heads that I build have a poor surface finish from the factory. #MAXCFM
@jakem53393 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, I know what RA is.......
@immanutt4442 Жыл бұрын
Roughness Average that can equal to the grit or grade of stone or sand paper for the proper finish
