Headphone jack was a nice addition for the eMate since the other Newtons didn't have that.

I printed off a transparency for an overhead projector for a presentation on this. I also printed off my CV and got a job as a result! One of the reasons it didn't take off is that Apple restricted its sale to the educational market. In the UK in 1997, a journalist complained about this in a newspaper column and as a result Apple opened up sales for a month or two to people without education connections. That's when I bought one and it paid back by helping me to get a job. I still have it and it still works. Jonathan Ive designed it.

honestly if my school had used these instead of the.. 8-bit, 4-line LCDs right above the keyboard, essentially BASIC machine though in text-only mode, for "laptops" for typing up in non-computer classes, it would've been great. especially the original concept of having each student keep one and have all their work on there. the ease of multimedia documents that this looks like it would've enabled would've been fantastic. and the newtonOS seems to work much nicer on this than the early gen messagepads.

Wow, I was expecting "Eat up Martha" level character recognition, I'm really impressed. Too bad it turned out that people prefer to type on their devices, decades of research basically wasted, I doubt that Apple "shared" it with anyone developing OCR's.

I've used Apple products for 32 years (first computer was the Apple 2), and I remember buying an eMate; it was hellishly expensive, but was a really great device. Certainly a precursor design-wise for the iBook. Thanks for putting this video up; brought back a lot of memories!

Very true. While fairly robust and capable for its time, the eMate simply never gained momentum beyond the (mostly) niche grade school education market it had settled into. Seems to me, had Apple offered a larger (15" or 16" screen) version for adults/parents (in see-thru black or grey) the eMate may have become a huge hit for Apple.

In theory, do you think it could have been possible to actually do voice phone calls on the Newton if you connected a voice modem to it? Does the Newton have a microphone in it for recording sound? If it does, then in theory Apple could have release software to allow you to use the Newton as a speaker phone of sorts if you connected a voice capable modem to the unit.

I'm not sure what the "Apple printers funny funny" is all about. One thing that was great was AppleTalk, which made it a lot easier to connect. It was kind of like Bonjour before wireless existed. It was a relief to find AppleTalk instead of connecting a printer to a Windows network (or use one of the countless apps made for that purpose).

to sum up everything for you... apple freaks will say "apple did something ahead of their time and they invented it!" pc freaks will say "apple doesnt invent anything they just steal it from others!" tech people will say "apple did invent some things but not as much as people think the reality is apple licenses products to use and pairs them with other products from other companies and themselves and makes a good product that does what its supposed to. however they dont venture too far from the pack because in the end apple is a business and going slightly above competitors can bring in more money than taking a chance on something that might fail." the tech guy has one set of lungs but he is correct.
