Nintendo's 64, Sony's PlayStation and Sega's Saturn. These three consoles all existed in the same console generation, but had drastically different sales numbers. But how do these consoles compare nowadays with their new reputations among the retro gaming community?
Nintendo 64 vs PlayStation 1 vs Sega Saturn - Retro Bird / Which 5th generation console was the best?

Although I love the GameCube I actually do think the Wii is better. Why? Because there are so many unique underrated gems on the Wii. These games are of course hidden among the see of crappy Shuffleware, but it's the coolest thing to find such amazing gems while looking through some of the crap games.

For those wondering, the take where I get slapped was attempted nearly 20 times until I could do it without flinching too soon. I think the problem with the Saturn is all of the hardware blundering Sega did before it (32x, CD). If they went from Genesis to Saturn and really made it a destination for their developers (and marketed the crap out of it like they did the Dreamcast), they might still be making new consoles today.

I've always gotten the impression they might've just tried too hard by having their eggs in so many different baskets. People point to the disagreement between Sega of Japan and Sega of America a lot too.

They didn't need the CD or the 32X. They could have developed for the Genesis ad infinitum and continued to be successful.

Not just their previous hardware blunders but the Saturn's hardware blunder as well. Sega's arcade division had embraced 3D, but their home division was so short sighted that they wanted to stick with 2D on the Saturn until they got spooked by the PlayStation's 3D capabilities.
@blitheringrando1410

I think the sega CD in specific undermined the Saturn. Releasing the two disc based Sega systems 2 years apart, very few people would be enticed to buy a second cd based console from the same brand. Then the Dreamcast came 4 years later and people were just over Sega. Too many systems in rapid succession with not enough life in each.
@juststatedtheobvious9633
@juststatedtheobvious9633 Жыл бұрын
@@blitheringrando1410 The Sega CD was fine. It gave developers a chance to practice with the new medium, and get past a lot of growing pains. Not as fine: Sega of Japan refusing to give developers the Sega CD specs, because they were paranoid about Nintendo copying them or showing them up. The end result was one of the most disappointing console launches of all time, and a library that rarely took advantage of all it offered.

We would traded systems often enough and actually bought each other games that were actually for ourselves when we traded. My dad's step son (parents split when i was 1) had the Saturn so I got to play that every now and again with step bro. He eventually gave it to me as a birthday gift when we were mich older. I love this channel. You managed to concisely cover all the main points in 13 minutes as well as the feelings about these consoles. For me I enjoyed the N64 the least, but always appreciated how they focused on 4 player gaming out of the box. It always looked like an advanced party machine. While I owned both Saturn and PS1, I loved the Saturn more because of its powerhouse 2D amd Japanese exclusives games (which were alot). During this era of gaming; I always found the 3d games to be rough and ugly looking, even at the time; with the exception of the all time greats. The PS1 3d games looked better than the competition, but even then it wasn't saying much and there were so much more 3d games than 2d on ps1 and N64. The Saturn excelled greatly in 2D games and for a time they did get good ports of the popular 3D games; which while not as good as the PS1 versions; they were much better than PS1 ports of 2D games (Resident Evil Saturn port was better than the PS1 Xmen vs Street Fighter port). If the Saturn didn't end sooner than the PS1 and had the same support in the US as it did in Japan; history might have ended up remembering it as being the better console and we may have been trying to get Sega Saturn 5s in 2021 instead of PS5s.

Having grown up with the NES and Genesis, the N64 was a revolution. It's multi-player approach to gaming made me realize that gaming is a social activty. After all those years of playing single-player games (or even two-player games played solo) in a dank, dark basement, the N64 taught me that gaming could bring people together rather than keep them apart.

I grew up with all three. Saturn was my favorite because of games like dragon force and shining the holy ark. Metal Gear was special to me and Star Fox 64 looked especially amazing to me at the time. I didn't notice segas struggles really since I couldn't ever really afford more than maybe 15 games a console in those days. I think this is the story for most kids. I never met anyone in those days with extensive collections like you see older gamers with these days. So It didn't really matter at the time that the other systems had more games as long as each had 20 really good games. Which I think is true of all three!

Maybe in the US. In Europe N64 basically didn't exist. It was Playstation all day everyday. It was so popular that many EU countries don't use the term "Video Game console" they say "Playstation". Similar to what Nintendo did with NES in the US. And that is THE difference between N64 and Ps1 popularity. PS1 was everywhere while entire countries never heard about N64

The Saturn's US experience at the time was miserable, but coming into the library later with Japanese imports it's my favorite of the three (or however many you want to include in this generation since the 3DO and arguably the Jaguar and Dreamcast also fall into it). I've always had a thing for 2D games so it fits like a glove. The N64 is the one I had as a child but I find it's the one that holds up the worst. It definitely has the most unique identity of the three though. So many entirely unique games and I love several of them like Starfox 64, Majora's Mask, and Diddy Kong Racing quite dearly. The PS1 just has a much better balance though. While the Gamecube had a few genres it struggled with the N64 leaves you with merely one or two options if you want to play a SHMUP, RPG, or 2D platformer. On the whole though I'd say this generation and the one before it are the two gens where the three major console among the gen are all worth owning even if you're just a casual retro gamer. They all offer an experience that feels very distinct from the competition instead of just a different flavor, which often happens with at least two consoles in other generations. Like, if you own a 360 there's really not too much different about the PS3 outside of its handful of exclusives and vice versa. They feel like chocolate and vanilla ice cream instead of one side being ice cream and the other being pie.

I was really fortunate as a child, I had an N64 and oddly/randomly a Sega Saturn as well. I say oddly because I didn't even ask for it or knew it existed when I got it, it was a truly random Christmas gift from my parents one year. At the same time, my step sister had a PS1 which she would bring over once in a while and we'd play multiplayer on Legend of Mana together, and I absolutely loved it. I remember really enjoying all three consoles, though I must say I think I favored the N64 just slightly over the Saturn- it had such classic IP's with truly revolutionary games that I just couldn't put down. Don't get me wrong, the Saturn was excellent as well, it came with Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona USA, which were all slam dunks in their own right and I played the heck out of.

I think you’re right in your assessment of multiplayer capabilities on N64 vs. PS1. I was 18 when I had both N64 and PS1. I found myself playing single player games more on the PlayStation, and multiplayer games (such as Goldeneye and Mario Kart), more on the Nintendo 64. And overall, the Nintendo 64 just had a different vibe. As you’ve said, the PlayStation had more mature games, while the N64 had fun games that appealed to kids. The multiplayer strengths of the N64 may have also contributed to its lower sales. When you only need one console per four people…

Pro wrestlings popularity peaked between 96-2000, during that same period of time thq released 4 consecutive 4 player simaultaneous games based off first wcw, and then wwf all as n64 exclusives... that plus the turok games did so much for n64 that gets overlooked everytime people bring up the first party support and rare brand games. Not to mention the 3 or 4 star wars exclusives also. Plus, almost no loading time with cartridges.

As someone who had a decent N64 collection growing up...yeah, I can tell you that the system has way more than just the small handful of most notable games. There's a lot of good stuff on there. As for a favorite...well it would have to be between N64 and PS1 for me as I've never had or played a Saturn (never had any Sega consoles actually). But how can I choose between them? They're both so good!

Think you nailed it with the comment about it depending on your childhood. I didn’t have any (pc was my thing) but my friends had PS1 and N64 so they are the default. But I was sucked in to Saturn’s marketing and coveted it hard. If it wasn’t so expensive in UK it was the one I wanted at the time. Now I’ve got all 3 the main thing stopping every playing my Saturn (other than children to keep alive) is fear of burning out the laser. Also for what it’s worth, I think the n64 controller is awesome. It just worked so well for golden eye. Playing stuff on emulation today just doesn’t quite get that across

In terms of graphics, processing-power, controller-versatility, and launch-dates, I'd say that the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation 1 are perfectly comparable for each other's advantages & disadvantages, as well as which third-party games can be mutually designed for both platforms properly! The Nintendo 64, on the other hand... also evolved technology with newly possible 3D Graphics for video-games (while being limited to using numerous 2D pixelated sprites), except in a significantly very different approaching way than the other two (aforementioned) consoles.

I‘ve just recently found your channel, so I’m exploring your older videos one by one. In my case, I don’t dislike any of these consoles. Personally, I never had a console as a kid. I desperately wanted a Super Nintendo, but my parents didn’t think so. When this generation of consoles came out, I was already a bit older, so I disliked the look and feel of the N64 which seemed to cater to smaller kids. But my neighbour did have one and we did play some games. Mostly Mario 64 which I did love. My best mate had a PS1 though and I totally loved it. I was completely on team Sony back then. We played at his home every day. I was of course aware of the Saturn, but I literally never handled one. Nobody had one. I did have sympathies for it as the underdog in the console war, but otherwise I didn’t have any opinion. Now looking back, my views have shifted somewhat. What made the PS1 great in my youthful eyes is now it’s biggest problem. The 3D graphics just didn’t age well at all. The N64 doesn’t look all that great either in hindsight, but the graphics have aged better. The N64‘s shading just holds up much better than the 3D-pixel-soup of the PS1. If I had to choose only one console of those three today, I’d probably still go with the PS1 though, but not for any of the games that I loved back in the day, rather for those overlooked gems. Overlooked by me anyway. Mostly 2D RPGs like Valkyrie Profile or Alundra but also a classic line Symphony of the night. Stuff that my younger self would have dismissed as relics of the past in this new 3D wonderland. #2 would be the Saturn for a similar reason, though in that case, I overlooked everything back then, so there‘d be a lot to discover. Though I’d also probably stick mostly to 2D games. As much as people love stuff like Panzer Dragoon, I’m not sure I could get into it, given it’s early 3D look. But I might give it a try at some point. While the N64 comes last on this list, that doesn’t mean that I don’t like it. As I said, it held up better than the other two. But there really isn’t much I’d want to play on it. Yes, Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 are still awesome games. But Nintendo has perfected both games since. There’s no reason to choose Mario Kart 64 over Mario Kart 8 or Super Mario 64 over Super Mario Galaxy. Only the two Zelda games would be games that I‘d jump in again enthusiastically. And while the four games mentioned here are probably better than the top four games of either of the other two consoles, it’s just not enough for me to pick the N64 above the others…and then there is the controller…

So, I’ve delved a bit into the systems again, or, in the case of the Saturn, for the first time. And I have to say that my view is currently changing. I’m still nowhere near the end of this journey, but I have to say, the Saturn surprised me. I’m currently leaning towards it over both the PlayStation and the Nintendo 64. When it comes to the biggest PSX Titels, the Saturn typically has ports as well. From what I hear, they may often be slightly inferior (though sometimes also superior)., but the Saturn exclusives look more interesting overall. Towards the end of its life, the PSX pulled away in terms of quality titles, but I’m not sure if that’s enough to beat the Saturn, particularly since the 3D graphics of that era are where not that great to look at. 2D is there it’s at.

It's really one of the most difficult match ups I can think of. I grew up with an N64 and my all time favorite games are on it. Nintendo's franchises were on fire and they had way more successes with transitioning to 3d than misfires. I also got a PS1 a bit later and the sheer volume and variety on there is staggering. You can be playing the ps1 for two decades and still run into games you didn't know it had. RPGs aren't always my thing but its hard to argue with how many top of the line ones the PS1 had. I got into the Saturn very recently by comparison and it's missing a lot of the franchise/marquee level stuff of the others on the surface, but digging deep and trying games out has yielded some of the most fun gaming I've had in years, to the point that it could be my new favorite. The Saturn 3D Controller is the best out of the 5 or so controllers available across all 3 platforms imo.

I’ll just say something I like about all the consoles. Saturn: While I don’t even have a Saturn, I do appreciate how it did a lot of impressive looking 2D games despite 3D being the hot stuff at the time. Astal in particular looks beautiful and I hope I get to play it some day. PS1: I like how it basically standardized modern controller design. Kinda. Prongs for the bottom, two shoulder buttons on each side, and later, two analog sticks. Not that there haven’t been great advancements in controllers since, but it definitely lead the pack. N64: I like the sense of experimentation Nintendo had with this console. Of course standardizing analog sticks, but also it’s emphasis on multiplayer and certain peripherals. Especially the GameBoy Pak. It feels especially novel to use that with Pokémon Stadium and Mario Tennis. I didn’t grow up with this console, but using those features felt exciting and like a whole new world to me when I did experience them.

Astal sucked. I bought it new. The cherry on the side is that it didn't even have an end label on the case. It's in a damn longbox plastic Saturn case with a blank white spine. Come on, Ass-tal. Final Fantasy VII was basically one of the reasons I wanted a Playstation in the first place. Also one of the commercials is how I knew about the Franchise at the time. My only clue of what Final Fantasy is like was in Super Mario RPG with a Boss called Culex which has the FFIV Boss Theme and the first time ever hearing the trademark Victory Fanfare. At the time I had to choose between the original Playstation and Nintendo 64. If I chose Nintendo 64, I would have played Super Mario 64, but if I chose Playstation, I would have played Final Fantasy VII. In the end, me and my brothers went with Playstation. Because of that, I've been a Fan of Resident Evil, Metal Gear, Tekken, Ehrgeiz, Bushido Blade and Alone In The Dark. Also Symphony Of The Night is how I know about the Castlevania Series. I have that Version of Resident Evil 2 since the beginning. (8:00) And when I first saw the Nintendo 64 Controller, I was confused why it had three Hand Grips at the time. The Gamecube Controller Design was a step up compared to Nintendo 64's.

I mean Saturn had good games, but they were also available for the PSX, so there was no need for me to get one. I mean, I mean they should've had a strong Sonic game at launch, and some new games of the other games I mentioned that were popular here in the U.S. the only one was Shinobi which looked awesome.

What I loved about the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th (burn in Hell 8th) is how different the hardware is from each other. The 9th isn't bad so far with tons of new stuff coming out but I digress... I am a huge Sega Saturn and PlayStation fan. I picked up both machines the day the PSX dropped on September 9, 1995. I got an N64 sometime in 1996 and it was okay...I didn't really start to like it until Golden Eye and Perfect Dark came out. By the time Perfect Dark became a thing I'm pretty sure I had a Dreamcast. At any rate, you could say I grew up with all three but the N65 was my least favorite. Most of my friends had PlayStations and I went to a huge high school in Miami.

This is my favorite generation of gaming. It really feels like the last time that all 3 consoles were truly unique and appealing to different markets- the Saturn continuing the old guard 2D and arcade-style action but on steroids, the PS1 providing more narrative-driven single player experiences with a lot of pre-rendered backgrounds, and the N64 providing the multiplayer focused, cutting edge fully 3D games. Ever since the 6th gen, all the systems have been very good, but they all provide fundamentally the same types of games and experiences.

In my neighborhood between Cleveland and Akron, we had an unusually high concentration of Saturn fans I knew like four other people who had Saturns. And most of us waited for the Dreamcast. Our idea of a party games was Bomberman, Decathlete, vs fighters and co-op light gun shooters. Before, one of us had a six player tap, another one of us had another six player tap and all of us had a joystick or two to bring over to get together for eight player Bomberman. What became the dark time for most was acquire time for me. I was picking up Saturn controllers and games left and right for like five bucks or less some as cheap as a dollar and that was back between 1997 and 2002. By the time I moved out of that neighborhood in 2001 I had enough equipment just to bring myself and the whole crew would be Bomberman-ready. But then again I was collecting ColecoVision games in 1994 so call me ahead of the curve. Luckily for me everything was so cheap that it made me into a 2600 fan and an intellivision fan and a Bally Astrocade fan, an Odyssey 2 fan, a 5200 fan, a 7800 fan, a Master System fan, and a World Trade Federation is this system called an Emerson Arcadia 2001?!? fan. And I had a good 15 years before Macklemore's hit song Thrift Shop made going to the thrift shop cool and people discovering that that was a good place for retro video games where suddenly as it hit number one the thrift stores dried up of video games. And by the time the used game market recovered from that we had covid-19.
