03:15 - MS Dos
05:34 - Amiga
08:00 - Famicom / NES
10:08 - Mobile Phone (Java based)

Like the predecessor, I prefer the arcade version and I assume Konami does, too. They even used its soundfont in Contra Rebirth, but in stereo. Unfortunately, most American gamers don't realize that arcade soundfont in Contra Rebirth. Some called it just a remix, others "Genesis style". As for Contra Force, most American gamers hate it just because of it originally planned as Arc Hound and not a Contra game. But Konami remembers it well and even made a Super Contra arcade version of its character select theme in Contra Rebirth, as well as using the same style for the Mission 1 theme in Contra Chronicles Vol. 2.

That first paragraph just shows the sad truth of American gamers and their lack of knowledge. Apparently to them, if they hear something remotely related to FM synth that sounds like Sonic 1-3, they're gonna call it "Genesis style" (And I REALLY hate hearing that "Genesis" name so often because to me, it's a clear indication that they know nothing but American stuff on the console, which are usually terrible. Oh, and Sonic too, but I'm pretty sure everyone and their grandparents know that.)

@1983parrothead Being fair, I don't remember seeing the games in arcades, especially not Super C. Most of the arcades I remember never had them (though an Ikari Warriors cab was not an uncommon sight oddly enough). Never played that version until well into adulthood, and wasn't a fan. Honestly, the NES games really just out-shined the hell out of the arcade, and not just because the gameplay was a lot tighter. Seriously, I could never get over how dull the colors were for both Contra arcade games compared to the bright, aggressive palette of the NES games. Being vertical wasn't a huge help, either. @Solar Flare Sorry Americans using the name they grew up with triggers you so. As to the FM Synth, that's what it mostly sounded like. That's going to be most people's point of reference unless they were die-hard PC gamers that had FM capable sound cards. The Genesis has a very distinctive sound compared to every other system before or since, it's not like people are comparing the sound to Atari. Granted the "ignorant American" is a trope often used by snobs on the other side of the pond to make themselves feel superior, so I'll let you have that.

I remember having a blast playing the first Contra on my friend’s Nintendo, so I was excited when my parents bought me Super Contra for the Amiga on my birthday. I know I tried playing it for a while, but eventually stopped, and never looked at it again. Your video reminded me why, lol!

Retro Core Anytime you wanna show someone who missed out on the NES/Famicom the quality they were denied, you show them pretty much anything Konami ported from the arcades. I think its a toss up between them and Sunsoft, of who could do the best orchestrations on the hardware, with Capcom bringing up a close second.

It was an odd choice for the style of game. I wonder why Konami decided that was a good idea. Even though there are sections where the player climbs up it still would work on a horizontal display.

The MSDOS version for its time wasn't that bad, it looked like most of the games for pc in early 90s, to bad the gameplay and programming was very choppy. great vid!
@221b
@221b 8 жыл бұрын
+沖縄札幌 It looked like a late '80s PC game. By the 1990s PCs had VGA graphics, 486 processors and Sound Blaster sound card and were starting to really come into their own as game machines, but in the late 1980s they were pretty terrible for games, at least for fast-moving side-scrollers like Super Contra. The thing with PCs is that, while game consoles and many types of home computers had dedicated hardware for common gaming functions like moving sprites around and scrolling a background, the PC lacked all that and had to do everything on its main CPU. This meant that they struggled at things like platformers that comparatively weaker machines like the NES handled easily. However, as time went on PCs got faster and faster CPUs until by the 1990s they were able to duplicate the functions that the consoles' specialized hardware would perform. After that point, the possibilities for games on PCs pretty much exploded since they were already extremely capable machines in every other respect. The Super Contra PC port came out in 1990, but it looks like it was targetting older PCs instead of taking advantage of the capabilities of the latest hardware. I'm sure that if the game had come out a year or two later it would have been considerably improved.

Despite what you say on the video, I have the certainty that there actually wasn't an official European Super Contra for arcades at all. It seems to me that the North American version was simply imported by many European arcade operators but without official permission nor license from Konami. I guess Konami would have released a "Super Gryzor" version in Europe like they did with the first game (and I hope in that case they wouldn't have removed the 2 simultaneous players feature) but for some reason they didn't do it. Notice that with this game there were no European computer conversions done by Ocean or anyone else to be released in Europe unlike what happened with the first one. The MS-DOS and Amiga versions are North American developed conversions which were only released in North America, not in Europe. Europeans had to wait for Probotector II Return of the Evil Forces on the NES showing up to finally have an official European iteration of the game (and like you usually say, thanks Germany).
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 7 жыл бұрын
Albert Wesker I think you maybe right on that. Looking deeper into the Arcade release it may just be as you said, US versions being imported to Europe. With or without Konami's permission is hard to say though.
@iniche
@iniche 7 жыл бұрын
Are you sure? There had been a few posters and adverts for arcade Super Contra, with some of these referencing Konami Europe's address. Also, several official European magazines have given the arcade game their reviews. On a tangent, but if you are in Europe, have you come across any prototypes/betas of Contra or Probotector in your area? There might be some local flea markets/old-school video game stores. I'm actively trying to find these to back up and preserve their data.

I love this game on the Famicom, my only complaint about it (and the first one) is the lack of auto-fire, it gets so tiring hammering the fire button after a while! I'm hoping one day someone comes up with an IPS patch to hack in auto-fire. Probably my favourite in the series after Hard Corps on the MegaDrive.

I am surprised that the DSI team didn't seem to bother with EGA hardware scrolling, which, while not ideal, is still better than just the bit shifting mess you'd have to use with planar graphics. It's not even like you'd eat up all the bandwidth, updating a full EGA screen 60 times a second would require maybe 2 MB/s. That's far from even the 8 bit ISA bus limit, which is 8 MB/s. If Megaman on DOS could have super smooth scrolling on a 286 equivalent machine, surely Super Contra could have it as well.
@JudgmentStorm
@JudgmentStorm 4 жыл бұрын
The Amiga could have handled a far better version of Super Contra than it got. What a tragedy. The NES version is great and I actually prefer it over the arcade. I love how Konami did a nice job remixing it, and even threw in a couple more stages. Some bosses that you can kill too fast with a level 2 machine gun on the arcade version actually stand a chance here. As for Contra Rogue Corps... I'll pass on that. It doesn't look like it belongs in the series, and what's the deal with the gun overheating? I'll play Contra 4, the Anniversary Collection, or Blazing Chrome instead of CRC.
