As teardown and upgrade guides can run a little long I got the timestamps up for everyone, sorry there was a lot to add this time. If you have any questions feel free to ask below and I'll try to help out where I can. I know stuff like this can be a bit stressful for some people so tried to make it as user friendly as possible. Hi do you know how many pins/type the small ribbon cable is going from the main board to the D pad board? One wasn't included in my upgrade kit so I need to buy one to assemble the standalone unit using the guts from the 3.

Thanks so much for this. Did a shell swap and now everything's working great except that I accidentally snapped the wire in the PCB while locking in the last ribbon. Thankfully it's just the rumble motor. Still an awesome device tho.
@KeiRetroGaming
@KeiRetroGaming Жыл бұрын
Ha you aren't alone there! The rumble motor on two of my motherboards broke by accident when pulling the boards out. The wire is extremely thin and barely soldered to the board, making it one of the toughest parts to extract when changing the shell.

I tried mounting it and successfully recorded footage, but encountered issues with the dpad causing the screen to move down constantly making it unusable. Despite trying different solutions such as swapping the dpad boards (tried all 3 I had), and controller ribbon cable, as well as using an older RP3 board, the problem persisted and I ultimately abandoned the video. I didn't like the implementation of using it as a tv console either due to having to use the controls on the unit before pairing a Bluetooth controller. It's a good idea on reusing old parts and I'm glad Retroid included it but I ended up not liking the tv kit they included.

Great video! I actually had a quick question for you if you think you can help me out... I was able to successfully install the upgraded PCB, but mine came with wires detached. Luckily upon further inspection it was just the rumble motor affected. I contacted Retroid and they're actually sending me a new RP3+ PCB. My question is would it be possible to build my own fully functional RP3+ with the extra PCB if I purchase one of the replacement shells with a screen from Retroid's website? Ideally it would run off external power since I don't have a spare battery. Would I need any additional parts or can I make due with everything I have? Thanks!
@KeiRetroGaming
@KeiRetroGaming Жыл бұрын
I snapped the rumble motor off the extra PCB upgrade kit I have here by accident too, wires on it are so thin... You technically could build a full RP3+ but it would look like a mess since the bypass power part wouldn't fit in the shell, you'd have parts all over. That's the reason they include the clear plastic console kit with the standoffs so you can reuse your old board as a mini console.

I know it’s a stretch but I’ve been having an issue with the left joystick. I’ve tried 3 different sets now. The originals. Gulikit Hall effect and retroid official Hall effect and I can’t seem to fix this issue I’m having. For some reason there’s only 8 directional inputs as if it were a d pad but the right one works fine. And there’s no analog input it just snaps to the full input for the nearest direction. Any suggestions?

According to Retroid, you have the option to use Retroid hall sensor joysticks as a substitute for the Gulikit Switch ones. However, I haven't personally tested this yet. It's worth noting that these two joysticks are completely different, and the ones used in Retroid units are not manufactured by Gulikit. If you're interested, you can find the Retroid hall sticks at this link: www.goretroid.com/en-ca/collections/diy/products/retroid-pocket-3-3-handheld-console-hall-joystick

I'm not personally into PS2 emulation much but Dreamcast can be upscaled much higher now going from 480p on the RP3 to 1440p on the 3+. Native android games also run extremely well now compared to the original RP3. Definitely worth the buy if you find the older model a bit underwhelming.
