Here’s a shootout of a bunch of HDMI splitters, switches and audio extractors I’ve been using. They're all zero-lag devices (even in downscaling modes!) and appear to work well with retro gaming devices, including the OSSC. The first “reviews” are the longest, as they explain everything you need to know about these devices, then the rest reference those. Here’s affiliate links to everything discussed, with their original written reviews linked below:

It's these videos that you make that I love. As a person who does a lot of retro electronic repair, many clients and friends ask for input about AV solutions for home theaters and such. I usually first direct them to your channel, because 9 times out of 10, you have a video explaining everything they need to know. You are truly a pillar of the community.

Thank you so much for the video! I'd love to see more videos like this for other AV distribution equipment with updated testing for changed or new products. It makes it a lot easier to watch one of these videos than to scroll through posts on the websites when I'm researching something. Maybe make one of these general videos once a year or so? If that's not cost effective, maybe a public database with the testing results could achieve the same thing?

Hello Bob, and thanks for the detailed review of all these switches and splitters! I have an alternative version of the matrix switch shown starting at the 10 minute mark. Basically the same functionality, but a more square design and a different DAC(I suppose) with two 3.5 mm outputs and 2 SPDIFs. But that's not what I want to talk about. What I want to talk about is one thing that's exactly the same as with the one shown in the video - that GARBAGE included power supply. To anyone who might have it: I do not suggest using it if you have any kind of gear that's sensitive to EMI (and I know you do, you sweet analog-loving chum, you). When connected to the matrix, it would create terrible high-frequency whine akin to coil whine and all my HDMI sources would have a very distinct noise in their audio signals kinda similar to ground loop. I was going insane for a couple of days. Threw that power supply out and replaced it with a known good one - yup, works like a charm. No whine, no noise. Maybe I got a bad batch, maybe the unit shown in the video does not have this same problem, but considering they all come most likely from the same factory, and that power brick looks exactly the same, I'd wager it's not the best thing in the world when it comes to EMI shielding. Just a simple buyer beware. If you happen to notice something like what I described above, don't pull your hair out, it's an easy fix, but it's annoying nonetheless.

My main point is I want you to be successful and make as much money as possible (which probably isn't much from youtube). I'm trying to figure out if any of this equipment makes sense for "upgrading" my TV and AVR that has HDMI Arc, (no eARC) to capture and pass through Atmos. Or does the TV or receiver or both have to have an Atmos decoder? If I'm misunderstanding and these capture switches are the decoder, then what's the wiring diagram supposed to look like?

Great video. Timing is perfect for me as well. The question I have is do the matrix functions work bidirectionally? My use case requires switching two inputs to one output. An RPi and a PC to one monitor with audio switching to desktop powered speakers. Obviously a two to 4 might work, but I have zero hand-on experience with these devices. Also, my 4-lort kvm is vga only and one of the usb inputs is not working. So I believe you may be doing another video that addresses those. Thanks for doing this. I have a difficult time deciding what to buy these days. Much appreciated. Thanks!

I have two 34 inch widescreen monitors of the same native resolution (3440x1440). I need to have two switched inputs to both monitors (a PC and a Laptop). I bought an Orei 2 in/2 out switch that allows me to switch inputs to each monitor. However, Windows will not recognise the second monitor for extending the desktop, it will only allow copying of the input to both screens. I am thinking this is due to the switch functionality in seperating the input signal to the two outputs whereas I thought the input would be shared to the two outputs. What do I need to allow the two inputs to go to the two outputs as a shred output signal. Is a splitter the right thing for me?

Is there a HDMI 2.1 splitter you would recommend that would also still allow a PS3 to work with a capture card? Looking for something that's very much a one size fits all solution rather than having to mess around with multiple devices. I've seen Ezcoo have a HDMI 2.1 Switch, but unsure if that'll allow a capture card to receive an image from the PS3 or not.

No, only 4K > 1080p, which is standard for any downscaling switch/splitter at the moment. From the Amazon listing: "HDMI matrix switcher two outputs down-scale 4K/ HDR 10 to 1080p60Hz only"

I'd really love to see an HDMI 2.1 switcher with two simultaneous outputs. The idea here would be to connect things like the PS5 and XSX to it and send one output to the TV for video and the other output to a receiver for audio. Right now I use eARC, but the LG C9 I have has a bit of processing delay, especially when using Dolby audio, so I have to use LPCM instead. I suppose one day I could get a newer receiver that supports HDMI 2.1, but... that's not guaranteed to not add lag, so at least the option of a switcher that does what I want would be nice.

Time for a new updated video for 2024 on 4k@120hz 8k@60hz 4x1 through 8X1 HDMI switches! I'm desperate to figure out how to update my system connections. Along with the points you make on this video I'm specifically interested to know which ones are the best to support @120hz and display the selected input on a single HDMI display. I might be picking up TWO BZBGear BG-8K-HS41 for my needs but am wonder if there might be a 8x1 and higher that would be better or equal. At the moment I can find anything and one of my worries is if I'd have issues with two as they have IR remotes. The last time I had two HDMI switches together they get their wires (or IR) crossed when using the remote from one of the switches.

Would this cut down on audio lag passed through my lg c1 to my sonos arc? I feel like my nintendo switch and some other consoles would do better with dedicated speakers using an audio extractor.
@RetroRGB
@RetroRGB 9 ай бұрын
It's possible that using an HDMI spitter to send audio directly to the Sonos might help. But you might want this instead: www.retrorgb.com/hdmi-2-1-audio-extractor.html

@@RetroRGB Amazing, I perceived less audio lag with my own senses using the Nintendo Switch with that audio extractor. Even compared to the TV speakers. It even works with the Sonos using the supplied spdif to HDMI. I'm thinking of upgrading to the 8k60 Audio extractor which I think would work with the PS5. Strangely though I don't notice an audio delay with PS5 to LG C1 and Sonos. Its set to pass through. Is it possible the tv is better equipped to handle that signal compared to previous Gen consoles?

Hey Bob, I was a little confused as to why you recommended one specific splitter for MiSTer's direct video. I was really leaning towards that avedio one as I want to capture and monitor HDMI via MiSTer. Would it be better to use avedio without direct video?
@RetroRGB
@RetroRGB Жыл бұрын
Direct video sends a WEIRD resolution that most HDMI devices don't understand, as it's really only designed for CRT use. It'll be hit or miss as to which splitters and audio extractors work with it, as opposed to standard resolutions like 480p, 1080p, etc. So, you can try the Avedio, but it may not work. Hope that helps a bit!

I notice almost all HDMI matrix switches only allow 4 inputs unless you want to spend ungodly amounts of money. What options would you recommend to someone with more than 4 HDMI consoles? I have had several HDMI modchips installed in various systems and my HDMI matrix is full. Also, when I daisy chained two switches together I had some issues, though i didn't get around to testing if that was a cord issue or some complication from having a system run through 2 (identical) switches. Thanks!

Is this doable or it will downgrade the picture quality or whatever? Thank you in advance! 🙏
