RetroTINK 5X Pro vs the OSSC!
The OSSC has been the go-to upscaler for retro gaming for high quality video output and low latency for the last few years.
Recently, Mike Chi has released the RetroTINK 5X Pro, an upscaler that has some compatibility and feature improvements, as well as higher resolution output!
But the question stands: is it really an upgrade over the already great OSSC?

I'm so glad to see comparisons with actual voice overs telling us your opinion and what you're actually seeing. There are so many people doing comparison videos like this and just dumping a bunch of footage on the viewer and saying nothing. It's crazy, people seem so afraid to just share their opinion.

I know how much effort it takes to just capture something let alone make a video so I can’t really complain. But I wanted to spend some time using the 5x. It didn’t make sense for me to just get a video out as fast as I could

I'm a retro speedrunner, meaning I play a lot of different retro games on different consoles. The 5X Pro would massively simplify my current setup (especially because of my non-modded NES). And that alone is an upgrade. Byt the 300$ pricepoint is hard to justify unless I flip both my OSSC and current og RetroTINK.

It makes sense if you run a variety of consoles, but if you mainly use the NES, an NESRGB mod for your NES might simplify some things. But considering the cost of an NESRGB mod (and getting someone to install it) might cost a few hundred dollars, the 5x might still make sense

My OSSC is now 100% for arcade boards. It's just as well... - There aren't any resolution changes with arcade games. Or at least the ones I play. - Line 2x still works with every monitor, which also means the best, most authentic scanlines. - The OSSC gave me zero trouble with my arcade boards whereas the RT5X couldn't decide what sync it wanted from my HAS (buffered or regenerated). I never had that "curly image at the top" problem with the OSSC. - Only the OSSC has VGA input, and with the HAS also outputting VGA (HD15) with an add-on board, I'm theoretically getting less noise with VGA and a separate audio cable as opposed to the 8-pin mini DIN to SCART cable that I'd have to feed the RT5X. - The gscartsw creator says superguns are risky and unsupported, while the HAS creator says the HAS is safe with gscartsw because the HAS attenuates audio and only does TTL sync if you want it to... which I do, so I can output to HD15; the OSSC actually expects TTL sync on the VGA port if the VGA source is RGB. By keeping the OSSC strictly for arcade PCBs, I'm sidestepping that risk of damaging my equipment altogether. ... Okay, so the RT5X still needs modes for PSP output and GBI Interface, but I have to imagine those are coming real soon.

Don't forget to use the cross scanline feature! I had Marqs add that because of how important it is to retain a crt's line count on the image. It's done so many wonders to games that really stand out with it being active.

I really liked my OSSC and Framemeister. Framemeister was the introduction and did a great job, even used FBX profiles but back in the day, I opted for OSSC because I was mainly under the misundering the Chrono Cross problem was fixed and it really wasn't. Although it was better. OSSC does have a lot of great features but I was tired of every firmware update, redoing profiles and spending more time researching FBX's settings and then tweaking to my TV to look awesome. I love the fact the RT5x basically does it all for you. Plus Mike is a really awesome dude to his fans. I have no regrets owning an OSSC or Framemeister in the past but I also don't regret selling them either. At the end of the day, I really just want to sit and play a game. The amount of programming and features in the RT5x were well worth it to me. It's also curbed my hunt for a PVM or BVM because (at least in my area) it's a mortgage payment for something well over a decade old that I don't feel comfortable recapping in the future. Also, MM8 in 1440p and then down to 240p mode was such a nice addition, I ended up tweeting to Mike about. I do plan on building a 486 retro gaming machine soon (and maybe a Windows 98 gaming machine as well), so with that, I might need another OSSC for VGA output but that's down the line.

I went for the tink. I probably should have watched this first, but now I'm glad I did. I like how it removes that flickering but I can also see it from the perspective of liking the flickering because it kind of emulates the look of a CRT. If you threw a scan line filter over it, possibly it would look better. Maybe just a basic scanline picture to throw over your whole stream

Thank you for the extensive comparision between consoles and going in depth about some of the seetings. I myself run PS2 and PSP exclusively through a newly bought OSSC and was wondering if I should return it and go for a 5x instead. But with the 200€ price difference and the barely noticeable differences it made my decision a lot easier and I'll be sticking to my OSSC. The interlacing can apparently be worked around with a FreeMCBoot softmod on the PS2 to have 480p be the standard output signal. That's what I'll be going with in the future.

Agreed, my SNES looks amazing on OSSC, identical to the 5x footage shown here. Also, regarding de-jitter on SNES - I've found that whatever voultar does differently for his SNES Jr RGB upgrade mod vs. other RGB mods for the SNES absolutely has FAR fewer sync issues, and voultar's mod also lets me use the cheapest RGB scart cable with ZERO issues while the same cable using a different SNES RGB mod causes all sorts of hot and heavy video glitch action.

Good video! As a current OSSC owner I'm not entirely sold on the Retrotink 5X although I think it does wonders for PS2 games. I was hoping you'd show more of the modes for SNES footage besides 5X. I do understand 5X being the "ideal" mode, but for games, 5X crops too much information from the top and bottom and that's a deal breaker for me. On top of that, the 256 mode for SNES stretches the 4:3 aspect ratio a bit more which makes it feel "inauthentic" to me. Just my own opinion on it. Ultimately, I'm looking for something super versatile that lets me capture RGB SNES footage at the sharpest, highest quality while maintaining accuracy as well, and since the OSSC doesn't play well with the Magewell, and the Retrotink stretches the 4:3 too much in 256 mode, part of me is just thinking of going the Datapath capture card & SCART to DVI route for capturing SNES footage in 240p and scaling that to 4K to my heart's content.
@dubesinhower

I wish the 5x had a way of running vga and cross scanlines for that really authentic crt look, but I guess everyone has their preference. Using ossc with pc and the newer game consoles shows that even the scanline features are more then preserving the more native aspects that often get replaced by games that don't support them, or go for that "pixel art" look.
@kdkseven
@kdkseven 3 жыл бұрын
So the OSSC has better scanline options than RetroTINK? I'm looking for a way to add scanlines to the Switch for retro games like the Turok and Doom games, and am trying to decide between the OSSC and the RetroTINK 2X Pro Multi-Format (both are the same price with similar features). So far it's seeming like most people prefer the OSSC for scanlines.
@voltz15
@voltz15 3 жыл бұрын
@@kdkseven Yeah vga will give you an input and all you have to add is an adaptor. I tested a onn brand from walmart awhile back side by side with native hdmi and it produced the best RGB 4:4:4 without black crush, but you still need something to split the audio, or check shmups forum for other suggestions. I pushed for cross scanlines to be included as they're native to all crts and have a line count. Even if matching scanlines don't work, vertical will produce the 480p and over image.

Bob alternates fields every other frame, not "alternate every other image and display it" (9:50). It's kind of correct when you already know what's going on, but sounds very confusing when you don't. No offense, there really isn't an easy way to quickly explain interlaced video so, who cares ^-^

OSSC is so much cheaper though...

I think simplicity is the key. The ossc is really great but just too advanced to setup. I think would choose the 5x over the OSSC pro.

Oh definitely, and even if you get a good profile saved, there are still issues with the OSSC, like resolution switching

@@johndee759 I only know of resolution switching on 240p-480i games. I would think running a Tink 2x would be a nice companion and you can combine it, plus smoothing features to the ossc's cross scanline mode for that more realistic crt look.

@@voltz15 the only thing the ossc is bribing to the table is the vertical rotation of games and that is actually a big one. They say that the OSSC pro is really a pro device and will cost around $500 and most likely more due the supply shortage.

Are we comparing 100$ product with 300$ product? From the 3x price it is already clear what is better.

While price doesn't necessarily indicate a product is better if you're buying a $100 OSSC I would have to imagine it's a dirt cheap clone and not of the highest quality. A legit OSSC imported into the US is still currently $200+ which makes this a pretty close comparison imo.

@@bradfordblevins8310 ossc is the open source product, so the word "clone" isn't the most accurate here. For me personally, ossc costed near 75-80$ since I ordered the pcb manufacturing from China and was assembling it myself. And this also can't be called a "clone", but just an item assembled by open documentation, allowed by its creators
