It is so heartening to see two young people discover and appreciate this incredible music. While all four members of this band are virtuosos, you have to remember that Chick Corea not only played what he did in this piece, but he composed it!! Can you imagine the genius it takes to create a piece of music like this? And then consider his entire catalog....it's mind boggling. So sad that he is gone. The world was a better place with him in it.

Chick Corea was certainly one of the greatest musicians of our time. Such a loss. I was fortunate enough to see this version of the band live in 2008 on the "Return to Forever Returns" tour. They received a standing ovation immediately upon walking out on stage before they even played a single note. I'm grateful to have lived when this type of music was being created, and it brings me such joy to see younger folks get that same experience. I'll make one suggestion - Stanley Clarke's second solo album, "Journey to Love", has a tune - "Concerto for Jazz / Rock Orchestra" - that you have to give a listen to if for no other reason than the fact that it features hand bells. Seriously.

Hi NicknLex, don't know if you enjoy side stories but I saw this tour live in 1977 at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis. I was 17 at the time and was fortunate enough to meet the band after the concert, of course I was star struck! Anyway when I meet Al DiMeola he was wearing a chain around his neck with a ELP (Emerson, Lake & Palmer) logo on it. I asked him what's that all about? He held it and said, "Oh that...that's RTF backwards". Hahaha, then said he was a big fan. So cool, super nice guy's to spend time with a 17 year old kid.

I discovered this album as a 10 year old kid in a guy's record collection. I was hanging out in his house while my dad and he went out on a job and he said, "Here's some blank tapes, record what you like". I saw that album cover and decided it must be cool.... I was blown away. I played that same tape well into my 20s and still love this album in every way.

I had this album when it came out, and have played all he parts with air instruments even as recently as this year. Music prevents you from aging, or at least growing up. :) One autumn evening, in weather much like today, only in the mid-80s, I was on the grounds of wondrous DeCordova Museum in the leafy suburbs of Boston, when we thought we'd walk toward some music we heard in the woods. On the way a funny cigarette was burnt, and by the time we saw what it was, we realized it was Chick Corea and Gary Burton, giving a free concert in the woods. The title cut is also a masterpiece, as is the whole album. So great to see that it is being kept alive.

Hey guys! This is one of my favorite albums of all time - first discovered in college when I saw RTF in '82/'83. The whole album is worth your time, of course, but Medieval Overture and Majestic Dance come to mind right away. I also highly recommend Stanley Clarke's School Days and Life Is Just a Game - both from the School Days album. Oh, and another one on that album, but acoustic, is Desert Song which features John McLaughlin. For Chick Corea, if you want a great intro to the Elektric Band, the song Got a Match is awesome, particularly 6-string bass by John Patitucci and drums by Dave Weckl. Other artists/tracks I'm hoping you get to: Jaco Pastorius - Portrait of Tracy (iconic solo bass piece) and Kuru/Speak Like a Child (featuring Herbie Hancock on piano) - both from his solo debut album, Steve Morse (currently playing with Deep Purple, but has fusion roots with Dixie Dregs, The Dregs, and solo) - tracks include Cruise Control (the version from Unsung Heroes, please!), Odyssey and Take It Off the Top (from the album What If with the Dixie Dregs), Cruise Missile and On the Pipe (from Morse's first solo album), Eric Johnson - Zap and Cliffs of Dover. There are just so many. I feel like the best evening ever would be just walking you through the favorites from my collection. Enjoy!

I really have enjoyed your sharing of your reactions! I am an old guy (born in 1952), who plays guitar & loves music! I have been privileged to have experienced a wide range of music. This has included classic country, classical, mariachi & flamenco, rock-a-billy & Elvis, "doo wop", early rock, blues, jazz, the Beatles & the rest of "the British Invasion", classic rock, Woodstock, fusion, prog rock, occasionally pop & more recently various types of acoustic music. When it was a new (vinyl) album, I would take RTF's Romantic Warrior to the audiophile store to "test" speakers before purchasing them. You just experienced "Duel... I just wanted to add that I saw Al during a spring break in Florida many years back. I knew of his work because I had his albums but back then there was no KZfaq or internet, the only way to see any band or solo artist play was on tv (and that never happened) or a live show, that was it, maybe there was a VHS tape of a show but I never found one. Anyway, when he took the stage and started one of his blistering guitar runs I fell out of my chair. I'm not making that up, it's not a cliche I actually slide down in my seat to the floor. That was something I had never ever seen and will never forget. This album is a fusion classic. PS: I see King Crimson in the background. That album is in my top 10 progs. My girlfriend at the time painted me the album cover for my birthday and I still have it, it has to be 30 years old. Nick n Lex the first song off that album will change your life, again I'm not just saying that. The album is from 1969 and completely groundbreaking for that time and dare I say for all time, the first song 21st Century Schizoid man in particular is organized chaos and just crazy but something you will listen to and hear differently every time. Only 1 song on that record Moonchild I could have lived without BUT all the others more than make up for it. OkI'll be quite now...be well, stay safe and keep loving eachother.

Really good reaction. Return to Forever was a fantastic band. I was lucky enough to see them live at the Gibson Amphitheater at Universal Studios Hollywood, a small indoor concert venue, sad to say the Gibson Amphitheater is no longer around. It was a fantastic show.

I wore this album out when I was in my late teens and early 20s. I really think you guys would LOVE snarky puppy, give their "we like it here" sessions a view, they're amazing.

You guys are on such a journey! Half of the songs you're doing are ones I fell in love with in college 40 years ago. I'm accustomed to them now, but seeing your reactions reminds me what it was like hearing them for the first time, what an impact they had. Thank you, and happy listening!

Great piece! I had the oportunity to see Chick Corea Live in 1990 with John Patitucci, Dave Weckl and Frank Gambale in Panama City, Panama (where I´m from) and what a magnificent concert. Al Dimeola's Land of the Midnight sun is one of my all time favorite albums also. Thank you guys for sharing!

As I recall Stanley Clarke put out a solo album with Jeff Beck as guitarist on side 1 and John McLauglin on side 2 but others include Chick Corea, David Sancious, George Duke, Steve Gadd, Lenny White, and others - I used to have it -twas amazing

This cut at points reminded me of Gentle Giant (the staccato part you mentioned at the beginning) Maybe their song "A Cry for Everyone" - but their song is in more of a Prog direction (Like Caravan) than a Fusion one, as this is!

You are only the second reactors I've seen to react to Return To Forever. Great Job. This is the upper echelon of Fusion albums. I got to see the reunion concert in Manhattan in 2008 and it was phenomenal. When I was learning to play bass as a kid, this was a Mount Rushmore to attain to. As I got older and was gigging, I gained even more respect for the overall composition aspect of these fantastic players. Just great players all around. I will say this for your channel..You guys venture into different waters, so that is a good thing. keep up the great work. So much music to react to. So little time.

You also have to thank Miles Davis for taking this times musicians under his wings and then release them to influence the music sene back then! Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, John McLaughlin…! And when Jimi Hendrix died he was sad that he didn’t manage to work with him!
