The fact of the matter is simple: after bashing George Lucas for more than a decade... it's impossible for these people to accept that others have managed to do a way, way, way worse job than he did. I still have hope that someday they'll come around it. But considering how the people at Lucasfilm blame the critical and commercial failures of the new films on ANYTHING but themselves and the quality of their writing, we still have a long way to go...

When George Lucas said "I may have gone too far in a few places", he wasn't talking about Episode I being bad, like many try to spin it (Plinkett for example). He was talking about the movie's climax being too complicated as it had so many events happening at the same time: Padme reclaiming the throne room, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan fighting Darth Maul, the Gungans battling the Trade Federation army, and the Naboo starfighters trying to take out the Droid Control Ship. The scenes where Lucas and his producers arguing are because of this issue, not because they think The Phantom Menace will turn out to be awful.

shadow librarian ... wait, wut ? I love the prequels, and I would agree that the OT didn’t do nearly as much worldbuilding as the prequels, but they did it a lot too. From Tarkin and his line on the senate being disbanded, to Lando talking about how hard business is under the empire, to the mere existence of Jabba and his palace, or the disparity of the rebel fleet compared to the imperial fleet in epVI. And that’s only a few of the instances in the films. Point is : worldbuilding is a prominent part of all six Star Wars, even though clearly the prequels brought it to its height.

As a fan of Doug, I'm actually ashamed of him. Back in the day, he had balls. I won't unsubscribe but he lost a chunk of my respect when he praised The Force Awakens and subsequent Star Wars videos have proven to me that he knows very little about the franchise. In that sense, he's no different from Stuckman or Stoklassa and it's sad because in other videos, he's not only entertaining and charismatic but can bring up some interesting and valid points. Unfortunately, whenever he talks about Star Wars, outside of one video where he showed some backbone and defended the Prequels (albeit not without shielding himself from other Prequel haters by saying that he still thought they were bad movies), he embarrasses himself.

"Ruined my childhood" is stupid for a different reason- if the OT defined your childhood that much, why would a movie thag came out AFTER your childhood ended "ruin it"?? I despised theLast Jedi, and since it shat on OT characters, the claim that it "ruined my childhood" would mzke more sense than prequel haters' claims, but I never said that, not even jokingly! I grew up with OT, even though I was born way too late to see any of them in theatres, I watched them hundreds of times on my VCR, and no matter how muchI dislike whatever hacks like Johnson do to Star Wars, they are NOT fucking time travellers!! They cannot ruin MY cherished experiences and memories that stretch as far back as late 80s and early 90s, as they have no power over my past or past Star Wars movies!

@nathanjora7627
@nathanjora7627 4 жыл бұрын
Konrad Wallenrod - Danko Sekulic The reason why some people say that, and although in the prequels’ case I don’t think they had a good case as for why it was the case I think that their experience can’t be denied, is because although no one can time travel, one’s memory can still be affected nonetheless. For many people, continuing a saga and taking their characters and ruining them, or prefacing a saga they know with a new part where the ancient characters are explained, can have the result of making them unable to see the first saga without thinking about how it supposedly goes for them afterward, or how they are supposed to have come from, which significantly reduce their enjoyment of future viewing, hence making them unable to treasure this piece of childhood they had with them as much as before. I’m not saying it’s logical, though the human brain is notorious for not being logical in many aspects, or that many prequels haters had good reasons to dislike the prequels and hence have their subsequent viewing of the OT harmed, I’m just saying that it happens. And it happens because it’s the goal of prequels and sequels. They are supposed to trick your brain into thinking that the characters on screen are the same characters, just in the past or the future of whatever thing the are prequels/sequels to, and they are supposed to make you either see the characters in light of the events depicted in the prequels, or see their actions in the light of what will come out of them past the original story. Hence if you right bad prequels or sequels (or that people don’t like your prequel/sequel), it’s only normal that some viewers will now see the characters or their actions in such light, which will decrease their enjoyment.

There was nothing wrong with Jake casting. Padme being a teenage Queen was also brilliant. She was a teenager taking care of her planet and taking charge of the operation to retrieve it back, including give orders to a Jedi and his Padawan. So, she had too much responsability on her shoulders, which can't be said of many teenagers. And it was clear she also had the knowledge to be the Queen.

Leia could use the force, she simply never got trained in it, until later on the story, even Force unleashed had Leia using the force a lightsaber so she could use it, just not on Luke´s level. Also I´ll state this right now, the midchlorians should´ve been considered a scientifical PoV of the force that force users like Darth Plagueis and Tenebrous believe in due to their life experiences with the force, while other force users could´ve easily had different PoV on the force, this should´ve been the way to go in regards to the midichlorians, some believe in them and some dont, but it´s not a absolute in SW just another way to see the force.

I just REALLY hate it whenever people say TPM had no main character. THERE WAS A MAIN CHARACTER! HIS NAME IS QUI-GON JINN! We follow that bearded can of awesome as he goes to the Trade Federation ship. We follow him to Naboo as he picks up Jar Jar and the Queen. We follow him to Tatooine as he gambles to get Anakin and fights the Sith Lord Darth Maul. We follow him to Coruscant as he argues his case for training Anakin and we follow him back to Naboo as he helps the Queen retake her homeworld and gets a rematch with Darth Maul. We even get a tragic score when Maul shanks him, showing how the light of the story just went out when he died. I loved TPM because of Qui-Gon, and how unconventional it was that the main character of the whole film was a wise and aged Jedi Master who is as good a fighter as he is a negotiator, instead of some young pilot or some lantern-jawed superhero who only knows how to hit things. And people shit on this film for not having a main character. Bloody hell, they're morons.

@@anomalyinc3239 And they add to the implications of Luke in the OT. He's the reason why Vader is fixated on him because he's the son of Anakin Skywalker and not more man than machine. He is the one who can overthrow the Emporer from his perspective. THIS IS WHY THE MEDICHLORIANS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE SAGA. My friend blew my fucking mind when he said this: "Medichlorians: a plot device introduced by George Lucas to place the upmost importance on Anakin Skywalker's necessity to be trained as a Jedi and be understood as the reason why Darth Vader can't over-throw the Emperor by himself. As they reside within the cells of living beings who are composed of various amounts of biological tissue, Yoda, for example, is smaller than the average human jedi but has one of the highest Medichlorians counts of any jedi on record. If Yoda had the equivalent injuries Anakin had after his battle on Mustafar he would have lost the same percentage of his Medichlorian count that Anakin did. Being the son of Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker has inherited the biological amount of Force potential that his father had. This reinforces the entirety of Luke's importance in the original trilogy because the Rebellion now has someone fighting for them as powerful in the force as Anakin had been during the Clone Wars. Thus, it gives Obi-Wan and Yoda a reason to want Luke to be trained as a Jedi, Palpatine has a reason to fear Luke, and a reason for Vader to convert Luke to over-throw the Emperor."

Keeping the mystery and mistique of the force is better. By unnecessairily adding midichorians into the story, you bring science to the force. Science can be measured and tested. Therefore, instead of building a space moon laser thingy, its better to gather midichorians into a petri-dish and inject them like steroids. Vader is quoted as saying "The power to destroy planets is insignificant next to the power of the force." Vader fucking knew this and you bet your ass the Emperor and the wisest of The Jedi Council knew it as well. However, if one is just chosen by prophesy, then there is no way to artificially manipulate the force. Powers are earned by training and leveling up if you will. The idea of midichorians was bad.

Palpatine. Padme's beloved and respected mentor who's always there to help her. No doubt he's already manipulated her in the past, and he uses her as a puppet to get Valorum out. Kids love the prequels. Kids even love Jar Jar. At the Phantom Menace reissue in 2012, I sat in the theater in front of a six year old that was patiently explaining the movie to his dad, although I’m pretty sure the dad was already a Star Wars fan. When Darth Maul first appeared, the kid gasped and then whispered to his dad, “That’s Darth Maul- He’s BAD.” When they arrived at the Jedi Temple for the first time, he said reverentially, “That’s MASTER Yoda…” And, when Jar Jar first showed up, the kid immediately giggled with excitement and then said, “That’s Jar Jar, Dad- He’s FUNNY.” Jar Jar is an audience proxy character for children, he covers his eyes when something scary is happening, he’s confused and overwhelmed by the big events around him, as children would be. And I think in that function, which is his intended function, he is undeniably a success.

To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

We were assuming the Palpatine we saw was the future Emperor, but we weren't sure yet. The trade dspute was the first chess move in Palpatine's rise to power. That's why Obi Wan sensed something elusive at the beginning of the movie and why Qui Gon told the Queen that this trade dispute didn't make sense and there was something else behind it. In each movie we see Palpatine's rise in power. If there was no politics in the movie and he just became a Emperor at the end of Ep.3 people would complain how he just become Emperor. @@VibingMeike Also watch Hayden and Natalie Portman's body language in the fire place scene. Regardless of what one thinks of the dialogue, if they can't see that Anakin and Padme are into each other just from the way they hold themselves, then they're fucking blind. Besides the body language, I'm fine with the dialogue in that scene because I've got a soft spot for corny dialogue. When it's self-aware, it comes across as completely genuine like a character is saying "yes, I sound cringeworthy and lame but fuck it, I don't care because this is how I feel". George Lucas knows he's a corny guy so his dialogue is self aware, if not from Anakin and Padme then at least from the man who wrote those characters. This is also something I noticed in the Victoria series and Alita: Battle Angel. Some of the dialogue is corny but it's partially BECAUSE it's corny that it feels authentic, like someone is opening up and allowing themselves to be vulnerable regardless of how uncool they sound.

@@tomnorton4277 Well, I'm not a big fan of that scene, but I totally get why it has a dramatic tone, even tho it can be a bit too over-the-top. And the dialogue isn't my favorite either. It's not because of the tone but it feels like it comes straight from a Shakespearean drama, most of the other dialogue had some level of moderation. I understand that Anakin is romantically illiterate but it feels like it's just a bit too much if that makes sense?. But overall I think the scene is not even close to the travesty some people make it out to be.

I love Doug Walker and to his credit, he made a video defending aspects of the Prequels, including Hayden Christiansen's performance. But he's not a Star Wars fan. It's obvious that he's not passionate about the franchise and he probably never was because he has a limited understanding of the lore. Also, Doug's brother, Rob, is actually deluded enough to say that The Rise of Skywalker is better than the Prequels and even said that he thought people were crazy if they disagreed. Like his brother, Rob seems like a great guy but he's clearly no Star Wars fan and I stopped watching his and Doug's review on The Rise of Skywalker when he said he thought Prequel fans were crazy. Anybody who genuinely thinks the Disney Trilogy is better than the Prequels has some kind of mental abnormality. And yes, I realise the incredibly hypocritical double standard I'm applying here but I just can't comprehend how anybody could think that the Prequels are the worst Star Wars films because the storytelling for them is Shakespearean compared to the Disney Trilogy. I can understand it coming from low IQ drones, nostalgia blinded fans, and hacks who are either shilling for Disney or simply can't admit that they were wrong, but Rob isn't even a passionate Star Wars fan and he and Doug have been doing great without it. I can't think of any motive for them to shill and the hype for Star Wars is all but dead, which means there has to be some faulty mental wiring for Rob to side with The Rise of Skywalker over the Prequels.

I love these videos that you've made for the Prequels. I'm happy that someone is standing up for them- I love them. But please understand, not every OT fan looks down on these movies. The prequels were and are really good star wars movies. Sure, Jar Jar was a mis-step. And Jake Loyd perhaps wasn't the greatest cast choice for Anakin. The dialogue was hokey sometimes. But the stories were brilliant, the characters themselves (other than Jar Jar) were great, the action was spot on and the music, as always with star wars, was just perfect. Once you got past Jar Jar and Anakin in episode 1, the rest of the prequels were great, and they fit perfectly in the star wars universe. Even the midichlorians thing made perfect sense really. Surely the jedi would have some tool to test how strong in the force someone would potentially have? Because they would usually take very very young children, even babies, to train as jedi. How can you test a toddler for force power? You just take a sample of blood, see how responsive it is to the force, however that may be done, and then you decide if they would be strong enough to be jedi in training. Ignoring Jar Jar, there isn't really anything wrong with the movies aside from a bit of pacing in episode 3 (they turned Anakin way too quickly from best buds with Obi Wan to a mortal enemy of all that is good) and some of the dialogue being hokey and cheesy.

In episode 2, he wasn't nearly so bad because we didn't see him much. Why would such an intelligent and strong leader as Padme be so foolish, how would the Naboo people, including his own Gungans allow him to gain such a position of power. The chancellor could not dictate anything at that time. That was the point of the thing. I find it highly unlikely that Palpatine would have just said "Oh, Padme, would you mind having Jar Jar fucking Binks as your second in command, in case something happens to you so he can make decisions for the Naboo people?". And even if he did, Padme wouldn't just allow it. Queen Victoria was alive just over a century ago and she was 18 years old when she ascended to the throne. You don't have to go very far back in history to find teenage monarchs. Granted, you have to go further back to find literal child monarchs but Edward VI was 9 when he became King and died at the age of 15, which is only a year older than Padme was in TPM, and Tutankhamun was 8 or 9 when he became Pharaoh and died only 10 years later.

Also, another thing I feel people always "forget" about the prequels; they may not be perfect movies but they definitely pushed the cinema world forward, just like the original trilogy had done in its time. I know the CGI is the subject of many criticisms from our post 2010 eyes but at the time the prequels came out, the effects were gorgeous and, for many people, it was their first time seeing somthing so grandiose on screen. Lucas tapped into the very best equipment and surrounded himself with masters of special effects. Clearly, the three movies changed the face of cinema, after them no one could unsee it and return to lesser effects, just like Peter Jackson did with the LotR saga at approximately the same time. Now, you can say whatever you want about Lucas' realization being too academic, too bland, too static, etc, especially if you compare it with Jackson and his more "entertaining" style as I did, but the man, while not being the most remarkable director, set the standards for what we have now in terms of cinematography and effects. Obviously, none of these movies are flawless masterpieces, but you can't just chose to ignore how important their release was for cinema and film-making in itself.

They weren't like common people voting for a president, but several states, such as the Holy Roman Empire, would have the monarch be a member of the noble class, elected by a group of nobles, which is how things seem to be done on Naboo. Another prequel haters complaint that doesn't make sense. Good job on pointing out the other thing, about child monarchs. Now if Sailor Moon isn’t your thing that’s fine, but give legitimate and insightful critiques about the show and not some lude and crude “jokes” that it’s nothing more than boner bait for young boys. Instead of realizing it’s based on Greek Mythology and to understand the decision that we’re made for the show. So he already looses any and all credibility to me. It's quite common. Many people try to place themselves or another person in a position a character is, forgetting that that character has a very specific background and characterization. A good writer makes sure that there is a logical explanation for why a character commits his actions. yes, kids are not adults and sheltered people will not act as people who had a normal childhood. A character being weird is not a problem. A character that contradicts his logical position is. That is why someone like Anakin makes sense. He acts in accordance to his background.
