For more great information about water treatment, subscribe! / watersto. . A common concern with a Reverse Osmosis drinking water system is water continuously running to drain. Since the Reverse Osmosis drinking water system (RO) flushes it's waste water while it is filling the tank, water running to drain during production is normal but after 3 or 4 hours of zero water usage there should be zero water running to the drain. There is an ASO or Automatic Shut Off valve which in conjunction with the check valve shuts off the water when the tank is full. This valve requires a minimum of 40 psi of pressure to shut off the flow. In rare cases where the membrane becomes extremely fouled this can also cause water to continuously flow to drain so if you haven't changed your membrane for several years now is the time before proceeding.

A couple of tests need to be completed to check the system and see if the ASO or the check valve is defective:
1) First, starting with a full tank, draw 2-3 glasses of water from the faucet, the RO will start making water to top off the tank.
2) Turn OFF the ball valve from the tank by turning the handle 90 degrees, which simulates a "tank full" condition. If your RO feeds a fridge, turn off that line too.
3) Wait for 3- 5 minutes, then check to see if the drain water stops running by listening or actually removing the drain line to observe, if the water has shut off both the ASO and Check valve are working properly.
4) If water continues to run to the drain then either the Check Valve and/or the ASO valve is defective.
5) Be sure that the tank is full or close to it and remove the drain line from the drain saddle so you can check the flow.
6) Turn OFF the Cold feed water supply and open the tank valve.
7) Check the drain line, if water flows then this water is coming from the storage tank which means the Check Valve is broken. If no water drains out from the black line this means the ASO is defective and needs to be replaced.

Thank you for these videos. I come back to them time and time again. My RO system was in our house when we bought it so I had no idea how to use or take care of it. So far for the past 4ish years I have been able to resolve all my issues with your help alone. It has been especially useful during this pandemic when a service call is not so easy! Very good, thorough explanation. I have a question that I don't see addressed specifically too often... About how many cups of water should you be able to fill before the system begins to fill up again? And - for how long should that filling take? It seems as though mine runs for almost an hour or so and it's loud and bubbly and shouldn't take that long to refill. Thanks!

Thank you so much for the video. I have the same issue and would like to ask one question. I pulled out the drain line to perform the first part of the test and the water wouldn't stop flowing when the tank was closed. However, when blocking the drain line with my thumb, the water stopped immediately after 5 seconds. When the water supply is off and the tank valve is open, the water does not run. Is that still a problem with the ASO or it can be the flow restrictor?

Hi, thanks for the video. My issue is that it seems that my unit is running more often. It shuts off promptly. Also, it seems as if it runs out of pressure towards the end of a water bottle fill-up that it used to be able to handle without losing pressure or cycling on. Do I need to fill the inner bladder with more air or can it be another problem all together? Thanks for info.

Hi. Gary. Your explanation is very clear. Thanks so much. I'll ask a question. I replaced in order ASOV and Check Valve. It is shut RO continuously flows to drain when the tank vane is closed. But although I had replaced new membran and all filters, still the drain water is running non stop. What caused it is? I don't understand any. Can you help me please? Thanks now.

I know what you said. my trouble is solved. Feeding water pressure had too low. So I activited RO pump. Then drain water is shut.

Here you go, lessons I learned the hard way (my ASO valve would not operate correctly): 1) Make SURE you understand the IN & OUT ports and hook up the lines correctly to ASO valve. 2) Use ONLY hard lines to interconnect (dont use clear lines from home depot, they are too soft and valve wont shutoff correctly). 3) Keep all hard tube lengths to ASO valve as short as possible. 4) On all connections make sure the tubes push all the way down 5) On all post carbon filters, post filters, etc...dont plug directly into these filters, first always use a push in connector then push your tube into those connectors. I did all above and fixed my ASO valve RO system operation.

Hi Gary, great video I have replaced the ASO, check valve and verified 7-8lbs pressure in an empty tank. I still have continued water flow from the brine line though. When I shut the tank valve, water does stop to the brine line. Also, if I shut the tank valve when the tank is full, it does trigger the ASO to shut, but that is the only way to stop the flow. Do you know what else I can try replacing? Perhaps the flow restrictor? (100gpd filter with 600ml restrictor). Thanks!

I would think the check valve is the problem since you say the flow stops when you close the tank shut off.

I have a Model series USS-335 Brita Redi-Twist RO filtration. It doesn't have a check valve on the tank, it doesn't have a removable membrane like the one in the video (non Brita). It came with my house when I bought it and is approx. 3 years old. We changed the 3 filters approx. 2 months ago. We just noticed the water is constantly running after it came out of the top breather/overflow hole near the faucet tube. I checked the line drain line and it appears to be clear, water is still running out of the drain tube to the plumbing/drain pipe. I am at a loss. Besides replacing the whole system to one that is in this video is there anything else I can do to ratify the problem.

A tank with too low air pressure caused my system to drain continuously. Draining the tank of water and re-pressurizing it to 7.5 psi fixed it (I mistakenly released some pressure when monkeying around with the system before I knew how it worked).

How do you repressurize the tank to 7.5? My RO System is brand new and it constantly runs and water goes to the drain and the drain does not get filled. When I shut off the tank’s valve the draining stops in like 15 seconds, so I assume it is not a problem with the check or the ASO valves this video talks about. Any thoughts? Thank you.

From personal experience, the system in your video is an absolute pain in the back to work with even for experienced techs. The biggest problem I run into are leaks at fittings because of excess movement (and in older units excess can be a slight bump due to lack of motion over the years and the interaction of the seal with the tube and o-ring) and hard to remove filter housings because of lack of lubricant applied O-rings/threads. Also you need to be careful when removing/installing the polishing filter due to having to indirectly moving the filter from the quick connection fittings and these also tend to leak with the slightest excess of movement. Make sure to also apply new PTFE tape on those threads before installing a new filter! Give it about 2-3 layers of tape to be safe from leaks.

One thing I have noticed, is that some of the polyethylene tubing from the hardware store, is sometimes "out of spec" On size, sometimes causing me leaks. Also another type of tube fitting, that is cheap, and "leak free" but an absolute pita to use if it is needed to "reconfigure" often (connect and disconnect) is the "JACO" compression fitting.

Hi, not sure if you can help. I have a vectapure 360 system and water is draining constantly. I have replaced the ASO, but it's still draining. I have looked for a check valve, but cannot find one, do you know where it would be? Also, I've checked the pressure in my storage tank empty and it's 7psi, but when full only gets to 22psi. Andre Thank you for this very informative video. After watching it, I changed the check valve and it fixed the problem. Prior to my replacing the check valve, my system probably treated hundreds if not thousands of gallons of water, so I suspect that I should be replacing the 3 pre-filters as well as the membrane, correct? I do have another question for you, my system uses an adjustable flow restrictor and I would prefer using an automatic shut off switch that is equipped with a flow restrictor that flushes the system every hour or so. Are you familiar with these and would you recommend using these and if so what make and are there any instructions on installing these?

@@GarytheWaterGuy HI Gary, yes I usually replace the filters every 12 months but my question was relating to the fact that my control valve was leaking water 24/7 for 3 to 4 months. Wouldn't all that water have also passed through my 3 prefilters as well as the membrane before being dumped into my drain system via the leaking control valve thereby ruining them?

My RO does not have ASO. So may be check valve is the culprit. How do I test and change that?

It could be the Pressure tank is very low on pressure and the pressure differencial is too wide. The Automatic Shut off works based on pressure differential but if the difference is too wide, the pressure from the low pressure chamber in the ASO will not push the piston into the high pressure chamber of the ASO and thus not allowing for the stoppage of flow to the RO Membrane stage. The pressure from the cold water inlet will then push right through the RO system and continuously drain.

Yes, the manufacturers typically recommend 25 - 30 psi minimum.

Gary, your explanation was clear but your visual of the RO system is shown backwards and when you point to the check valve it’s not visible. That filter you pointed to, which is the larger one has two outlets on that side and white one where I’m assuming the 90degree fitting is a Ck-90 check valve and the other outlet is black- waste. Is it a 90 degree Ck- valve ?

For a while now my filtered water from my reverse osmosis system has been tasting an smelling like garbage. I recently replaced my filters, but it continues to have that taste. I have drained the tank multiple times as well and it seems to work temporarily. Any suggestions? ??? Could it have anything to do with my garbage disposal on my single sink setup or the placement of my waste water ?

I had to remove the RO membrane housing completely from the mounting system to in order to unscrew the cap and replace the membrane. Now its not clear to me which outlet is the drain and which is the good water. Any advice?

"You Da' Man" LOL, I just noticed this constant going to waist happening and decided to consult KZfaq once again! Kick ace, we're all set!! Now I wont get jacked for a 2 second repair thats stupid priced. The repair guys must despise this resource! :) Last year KZfaq saved my top of the line cloths dryer from disposal with a $7.00 solinoid (after the owner of Milwukee Appliace said the control board is fried... typical no heat problem, it's a big game game with these appliance shisters)

Thank you for your video. I have replaced all the filters, the membrane, the check valve, the ASO, the drain tube, and my system is still constantly draining. I also drained my tank and pressurized it. The tank won’t fill now because the water constantly drains. When I close the tank, I get a tiny trickle out of my faucet and a strong flow out the drain. The pump does stay on for a while after you shut off the water, that is normal. Does water keep flowing through the system after the tank is full (or shut off)?

Yes, presumably if everything is connected properly and in working order, the stored water is of the same quality as the water coming directly from your RO system.

What if the TDS reading is good but the flush cycle runs for a long time? Like hours. Turning on the non RO faucet will make it stop flushing.

I replaced the AOS and the check valve. The water continues to run. I did make one mistake,.... I yanked the black line out before reading the tag on it. I was able to plug it back in but worry it is damaged. Also, would an old membrane cause the water to constantly run? Mine is a probably 5 years old.... I think I already know the answer. LOL. Yes, an old membrane would cause water to run to drain. Also, if you black line is your drain line you might have dissolged the DLFC or drain line flow control.

Hi, I have replaced the ASO valve since the 2nd test confirmed it was it that has a problem. After replacing it with proper orientation of the tubings, your test stills shows my ASO still having problem. Membrane is new, tank pressure is working and our household water pressure is confirmed to be atleast 40 psi, any suggestions thoughts why water still continous flowing to the drain even the tank is full ?

@@GarytheWaterGuy Your video says wait 3-5 mins with the tank ball valve off and I waited 5 mins then checked drain line but still it is running. Then I proceeded on the 2nd test and found it was ASO valve so it was replaced. I will try again in the morning to see if the drain line will stop flowing after 20 mins after shutting the tank off.

Restrictictor needs to be replaced . There’s different colors coded restrictions 24 , 36,50, 75 gpd. Anyway when you replace membrane you should have replaced restrictir too.

No. All you have to do is pump the air pressure to the correct PSI and while closed connect the line to the tank, ensuring everything is properly connected (while your RO system's water shut off) and then slowly turn on the inlet valve to your RO and finally it's safe to open the shut off valve to your tank.

After my tank fills with water and instead of my ro system shutting off, it makes a clunking noise like it is trying to turn off repeatedly but can't. Only way to stop the clunking noise is to turn off my tank valve. Any suggestions? thanks in advance

What happens when you turn the RO faucet on if the tank and tank line is removed? Would water spill? I’m trying to disassemble my system because of condensation leaking on my tank line. I have no shut off valves both at cold water line to the RO(just a T-connector) and also on the tank itself. I can only shut off the water at the main cold water line. Thanks

I have a WATTS brand 3 stage reverse osmosis system that drains continuously making that gurgling sound down the drain. Manual states, 4-7 PSI in empty tank. I pumped 7 PSI. Still drains continuously. I have that automatic shut off valve with the 4 lines going to it. Green & Red in & out. I've pumped 10 PSI into the tank and still drains continuously. Installed new filters didn't fix it. Is there a way to bypass this to stop it from draining, losing filtered water down the drain? My State doesn't have that safety code that's so called required to have in other States. Thank.

@@GarytheWaterGuy This Watts System has a automatic pressure valve. Has 4 screws to take apart. I took it apart and found there was rust build-up. I reassembled it. Works again. I wish I could bypass this safety code thing so I don't loose clean water down the drain. My State/Local area this isn't a code requirement.

I drew off 2-3 glasses full of water, turned the tank valve off, and the water stopped running to the drain within a few seconds. However, when I turn the tank valve back on, the water immediately starts running to the sink drain and keeps doing that for a long time, maybe an hour or more. The RO does well with filtration as measured by the electronic TDS meter. Could the problem be with the tank somehow? Thanks so much for these great vids.

@@GarytheWaterGuyThank you so much for answering. I did the test you recommended in the video. I drew down some water and then turned the tank off. The water stopped flowing into the drain almost immediately. Then, as soon as I reopened the valve at the top of the tank, the water started running down the drain again and continued for a long time. You said in the video that if the water stops going to the drain when the tank valve is closed, then the ASO is working properly. Did I understand that wrong? That's what led me to suspect the tank. (And actually, the pressure was a little low in the bladder but when I topped up the air, it didn't solve the problem.) Thanks again!!!

Need support: My Water Factory SQC-4 has Waste Water keep flowing out never stop after I replaced all four filters. I tried to shut off the main water feed in to the system, but Waste Water keep flowing out until the Storage tank empty. Is this the Check Valve problem? Where is the Check Valve on SQC-4? It only has one elbow connector at bottom of the membrane unit for Waste water, but I can blow air through it from both side of it. Please help. Thanks.

I did the first test u say on the video. I filled a few glasses and the system stsrted to drain. I shut tank off and the drain water stopped with in 30 seconds. So its telling me according to your test its working properly. So i did the second test and shut the main water off and th drain water stopped again. So what could be the problem. I replaced the all the filters and the check valve before the test. I filled a 12 cup coffee pot and the drain water never stopped until i shit it off. That little bit of water i asked for for the coffee pot created about 7 gallons of wasted water before i shut it off. Seems very excessive. What do u think? Hope i explained the problem ok.

Could the ASO be bad even though draining stops when we have supply on, tank off? I started with shutting the tank valve to simulate a full tank. Supply water runs through the ASO through the membrane, through the check valve, then stage 5, back through the ASO to the Tee where it would then go to tank or faucet. Both are shut, so it backpressures to the ASO and shuts the supply water to the membrane. Draining stops. So the supply water is acting as it's own shut off. When we do the second test, supply off, tank on. There's no draining. Because there's no supply pressure to stop the tank water going through the ASO, back through stage 5 filter, and then deadheads at the check valve. So then the problem with the constant draining would be that when the system is on. Supply on, tank on. The tank is full, but the ASO isn't stopping the supply water going to the membrane, backpressuring off the full tank, and out the drain. Does that sound right to you?

I replaced the membrane and it continued to drain. However, I did miss a step where I didn't open the faucet right away and I had some air pressure shoot out the faucet. Following the instructions in the video, it seems the ASO is bad, but is it possible I damaged the membrane and it was constant draining from an old membrane and then draining again from a damaged membrane?

I then took the ASO and reversed it's direction. The problem moved. Instead of the constant drain stopping when the tank is shut, it constant drained from the supply. I had already taken the ASO apart to see what's inside. So I don't believe the shuttle really cares which side it's facing. The color coding seems more to ensure that both colors go on one side or the other instead of same color on top and bottom. I'll update once the new ASO arrives, but I still want to know from you if it seems I understand why we test it the way we do in the video.

@@GarytheWaterGuy New valve arrived and it's working now. I also drained the tank and checked the pressure on the bladder. I'm wondering if that was the real issue because none of my guages read anything. I had to rely on the bike pump guage to reach 5-6psi. Hooked it all back up with the new ASO. Waited an hour and a half of more constant draining, trying not to touch it until the tank had time to fill, and it has now... finally... stopped draining. It has been driving me nuts for the last few days with nonstop draining. This entire event has basically fired the company that installed it from coming back out. They were called out for the draining noise it was making. Some miscommunication on the homeowners part due to a previous air noise it would make. The tech did an inspection and only noted that the filters needed to be replaced. I'm guessing the homeowner declined filters. Until I said something about the draining and I asked about the filters. This is where I stepped in. Filters were ordered, and replaced. It was missing the sediment filter and had a carbon filter in stage 1 with stage 2 empty. The tech should've noted this. I took the time to learn the circuit (as you read above) and was scratching my head on why it wouldn't stop draining. Because it was constantly draining. So by this point I've gone through all the procedures and the system now works again 👍 I reached out to verify that I understood the "why" part. I appreciate your quick response.

I performed the first test, ie start with full thank, then draw 24 oz water. It began to drain. So I shut off the tank valve. The water stopped immediately. When I reopened the tank valve it began to drain again so I timed it. The system drained for 10 minutes then stopped. Is that normal?

@@GarytheWaterGuy i have the culligan aqua cleer advanced, twist off cartridges. Installed less than 1 year ago, but bought used (new cartridges tho). My ro completely stopped making water. Checked the tank, was good. Changed the sediment and carbon filter, still nothing, but the new sediment cartridge only filled with water. Bought a new ro membrane filter assuming my water softener must be on its way out. Still no water. Noticed that the aso vavlve is between sediment and carbon cartridge, and when i twisted off the sediment cartridge it erupted from the top of the aso valve. Got a new aso valve, still nothing. Decided to untwist and retwist all the newly installed cartridges and bam, the water started flowing. It had to have been the aso valve because the old cartridges were less than a year old and i put back on the old membrane as it was not plugged and am getting good water now. I test my water softness regularly and its benn 1 GPG. Mind you i used to sell ro and softeners, so this was driving me absolutely crazy.

The drainage water flow is clearly visible and voice of filling can be heard as soon as tank is full I can hear sound of automatic shutter switched off -tick- the pressure pump process gets stop and the drainage pipe flow decrease and reaches to the low flow and slowly slowly it reaches to the drops state and that is the issue. I mean drops won't stop. I will go through once again with the video. But in my case I can clearly know the shutter stopped. But drops coming out unable to figure it out.
