I spend a week with the heavily refreshed 2022 Genesis G70 3.3T Sport Prestige trim to test out the changes both inside and out. Now equipped with an active exhaust, new Sport+ mode, bigger touchscreen and nicer cabin, the G70 has made many big improvements. It still isn't perfect, but with prices starting at just $43,000 for this amount of performance, the value of the G70 is untouchable in the luxury sport sedan segment, undercutting most of it's competitors by over $10,000. What do you think of the 2022 G70? Thanks to Genesis USA for providing this vehicle to review!

This was a great review. Hyundai and Kia are showing that you really can have it all and for a very competitive price. No compromises, no short cuts, no a la carte b.s. German pricing strategies. The germans had better watchout.

After a month owning a 3.3t awd I’m amazed. You can drive it as a cruiser in eco mode, very silent and a firm though comfortable ride or turn it into a car on par with the c43/s4/m340i by simply switching to sport mode. It’s truly luxurious in the way you can feel a lot was done to create a seamless and rewarding experience regardless of the driving mode. In sport mode, you really get the 2000s bmw sport car feel (a lot more muted in modern bmw iterations), it drives a lot like my old bmw 2004. The outside look is very aggressive, elegant and personal. The lights in the front are now unique and make for a truly differentiated brand signature. On the flip side: the engine character truly reveals itself above 4000rpm, the v6 growl is nice …above 4000rpm and that car drinks a lot in town… I wish I had a stop and go function or light electronic assistance at low rpm, that would certainly make the epa numbers a lot more attractive! Overall, I don’t regret my choice. Given genesis / Hyundai / Kia now top the charts in reliability plus free maintenance for 5 years (in Canada), that’s make a very compelling case.

Just bought home a 2023 base Hallasan Green 3.3t rwd in torrential rain earlier today. No issues whatsoever. Very impressive and my initial overall impression is very positive. Build quality and fit and finish are about as good as my 2022 M240i. Definately a looker but low key at the same time.

Thank you for giving us a thorough review. I can't fault anything you covered. I especially liked how you did the compare/contrast with the TLX. Your experience echoes that of others who have driven it. Based on my driving style, I think that I would prefer the G70 because I want to be more involved in the driving experience. Others will be able to appreciate driving a car that allows them to experience capabilities that may be beyond their experience levels. As a package of performance and tech, the G70 checks enough boxes to make it tough to beat for my specific uses. I wouldn't knock anyone for choosing the TLX though.

You are always spot on with your reviews and one of the car review channels that people can trust to have insightful and honest information. I thought it was funny how you mentioned how you can almost watch the gas gauge go down. 😂. Sport and sport+ will drink the premium at a full gulp. But that’s why you get that throttle response. In eco I can get 25-30 mpg pretty consistently on back roads for driving to work. The coasting feature works pretty good. 1800 miles on mine so far and I absolutely love it. It’s AWD and I think the Michelin primacy tour tires do a very good job on the curves.

I had this car for 2 1/2 weeks now and love it. Now I'm coming from a 2015 Genesis so I would say if you are coming from a bigger car maybe test drive the GV70 as it seems much more roomier than the G70 sedan. Thats my only regret not giving the GV70 a test drive as I'm thinking I might of been slightly happier with more space. I do love this car and its a blast, just sucks having that little bit of regret. Only because of the room, the car itself is fantastic. I always been a car guy but recently been thinking about an SUV and I love the looks of that GV70 after watching the reviews over the last week

Thank you. I’ve driven Honda and Acura for 40 years and considering the G70 as a possible replacement. That said, all the other KZfaq reviews are comparing this to BMW and Mercedes and dismissing Acura, Lexus and Infinity comparisons, even though Genesis is clearly wanting to tap that market. I will say the G70 seems to offer something to get excited about for under 60 grand.

Yes I have been in my 2015 Honda Accord EX-L V6 Coupe with an automatic for 8 years and no problems! My reservations are with the reliability. I know it has a good warranty but it also has hyundai as a parent company. I'm just struggling to pull the trigger because my Honda not only has been flawless, it's fuel efficient and very cheap to maintain. Not so with the genesis after the free maintenance. They actually require you to change the sparkplug out at 42k miles! Tell me your thoughts after being in the Honda family so long abd enjoying the heritage of quality durability reliability and dependability?

I feel like "and it starts right up" with the comforting smile would have been a lot more appropriate when I was a kid and half the cars on the road had some sort of difficulty starting. I mean, damn, that was such a different time! If you had said at that time I could have a car that would actually START? Would have loved that. Starter on my 78 Celica went out at one point and I parked it on a downward slope so I could pop it to life for like 2 years... Nowadays.... all the cars start.

Great review of a gorgeous car. I'd love to see a head-to-head comparison between the 2.0T and the 3.3T versions. Obviously, if money were no object, EVERYONE would go for the 3.3T, but given my long commute, better fuel economy would be nice, not to mention the cheaper cost up front. I'm just wondering how much slower the 2.0 is - or if it feels that much less refined (typical 4-cyl. vibration vs. the typically buttery-smooth V6) or if the 4-cyl sound is annoying, etc. Thanks Matt!

I'm strongly of the opinion that the TLX Type-S is the best looking and sounding car in the segment. But what really seems to let the G70s exhaust note down is that arbitrary second pair of catalytic converters it has. Once those come off, it makes a huge difference not just for the volume but the clarity and crispness of the actual noise. Almost like they were ready to go into production and some pencil pusher came at them with some capricious new emissions standards they "had" to meet. Same thing for the pre-facelift G70 and the Stinger GT.

Giulia still has better handling and much better steering in my opinion, it just sucks that it has so much less power than this does. If you're comparing the 2.0T G70 to the Giulia, it would be tough but I'd probably take this for the much nicer interior and longer warranty.

Matt- have you done a direct comparison between the TLX type S and this G70? Which has the better, more comfortable interior? Is the Type S a significantly better handling car? I think both have plenty of power for me, so my primary concerns are comfort, SPACE, handling and cost. Appreciate your thoughts.
@gabevillarreal96

I've driven both 2023 type s and g70 sport prestige 3.3t. I believe the TLX is a little roomier on the inside but rides a bit stiffer in both comfort settings. I like the sound of the TLX v6 better but the g70 is faster no question. I prefer the classiness of the g70 interior to the business of the tlx. Material quality ate both excellent. TLX has a thicker steering wheel but the g70s feels goid too. I think they are similar as far as quietness. Exhaust sounds better in the tlx. Warranty is way better in the g70. They both look better in person and both look amazing. The TLX will turn more heads but the g70 is classy sporty and timeless. It will age beautifully. TLX to me will be more reliable.

The lag in the throttle response in the Acura is the non-defeatable cylinder deactivation on its V6. It will turn off 1,2,3, or 4 cylinders independent of the sporting desires of the driver. I will never spend my hard earned scratch on any vehicle with cylinder deactivation. Unfortunately, this eliminates the Corvette, Camaro and others. Acura and Honda can shove their expensive p.o.s. engines and send them to Japan or wherever else it thinks it can fool the buying public.

I've had my 2015 Honda Accord EX-L V6 Coupe with an automatic and cylinder deactivation for 8 years with zero problems. It's part of the reason why my 300 hp (Honda rates their V6 at 278 hp but it dynos at 300) gets 34-35 mpg on my 1200 mile trip home every summer to Texas from Nashville. I'm not defending it in the sense that it's the best technology, but rather the fact that it's not as terrible as some would deem it.

There's a big difference in disposable income between the two. You're not at big-baller-status driving around in a 3 series (or similar). There's the principal of it too -- no one wants to get crappy mpgs in their measly 6 cyl car when they could get driving around in a twin turbo V8 and getting the same gas mileage. @@ShowMeWhatINeedToKnow Dude the very few engines are more efficient per liter than this one. And no way a 4.0-5.0 liter v8 with twin turbos is consuming less fuel than this without some wierd cylinder stopping and crap that wears the engine down much faster, but they lie to you that it doesn't, while the temperature differences and oil pressure differences between the cylinders is insane and you often times start and stop them. Look at the american cars with that technology in their V8s, they don't last. I think the current BMW engines are pretty reliable though, but they sure as hell are not fuel efficient.

I have to be honest, I don't like the refresh. It doesn't appeal to me aesthetically. First, that crest grille is yuck. The split headlamps are inelegant (they should stretch around much further). The pre-refresh G70 looked much better. And I miss the fog lamps. Second, I like that the pre-refresh G70 could be mistaken for a Bentley or Aston Martin. Borrowing aesthetic sensibilities from other brands is a Good Thing. Third, the rear end of the refreshed G70 is butt ugly (pun intended). The pre-fresh G70 looked much better. Fourth, the refreshed gauge cluster, which is half physical and half digital, is unappealing. Make it all-physical or all-digital but *don't* do half and half. (The blind spot imaging could've been placed in the center display.) Fifth, I liked the boomerang side vents on the pre-refresh G70. They gave the car a unique look. The refreshed G70 loses that uniqueness and could be mistaken for any other Genesis model. The 2022 G70 is still an excellent vehicle but it'll never get the same kind of love from me as in the pre-refresh G70.
