Catering to the needs of the humble pick up truck buyer used to be fairly straightforward, but now they've basically caught up with 'normal' cars in terms of style, equipment, and tech to the point where they could serve as the alternative to the family SUV or sedan.
The 2024 Ford Ranger is still one of the most highly regarded family of pick up trucks, but this new Platinum version seeks to push the limit of how luxury can be squeezed into this workhorse. It's the first of the 'fully loaded' trucks that seem to sell so well in the USA, but are Malaysians willing to part with more money (an 8% premium over the Ranger Wildtrak) for an edge in fanciness...
Where it counts, underneath all more expensive trim and tech, the Ranger Platinum is ultimately still a Ranger, with its ladder frame chassis (and resulting ride), the excellent but carried over 2.0L bi-turbo EcoBlue diesel that's found in the XLT.
Will this spark a similar upmarket foray for Toyota's HiLux or the Isuzu D-Max? Or is Ford chasing too small a niche?
