The historical gaming genre needs more games like this. Doesn’t pretend to be a simulation, but is playable and accessible. Can still whet the appetite for history. Might actually appeal to someone under 50.

I'm 17, and my favorite thing to do is play complex strategic, long board games.

Excellent review. I just got my copy a couple weeks ago, and love it. Also excellent solo, because you never know what units will show up or how the dice will roll.

Its funny how such a dark theme, with that grey and black picture of soldiers marching to their death is reviewed as fun and perfect for the family haha and the map its really colorful and bright.

Truly, it's a dark theme and the title is horrific, but the game is very much a game you would crack out instead of Axis & Allies etc. Fills a similar slot in a collection.

Great review to start my morning. I had similar opinions of the game. I am a huge WW1 game fan, and it seems each one implements interesting mechanisms for a fairly static war. Keep up the good work!

I live far away from people I would play war games with and when they do visit we can't always learn and then play a grand game. This would be perfect. As always great content.

So, given everything, which did you prefer: Attrition of Souls or The Lamps Are Going Out? Thanks!

Reading the Sequence of Play, Central Powers goes first. Does this mean that there are no Entente tiles on the board? And if so, what is stopping Germany from taking Paris on the first turn?
@ThePlayersAid2 жыл бұрын
Movement rules do not allow this to happen.

If you had to pick one game out of two Compass Games titles from 2022, which would it be? An Attrition of Souls or Imperial Tide?

Imperial Tide.

thanks for reminding me I can be stupid. should have bought this one when it was first on pre-order. Guess I'll have to wait and see if it's discounted when they have their winter catalog which comes out in... November? beginning December?

I’m surprised you didn’t mention how movement works. I’m not the most seasoned wargamer, but I thought the movement rules were as unique & important as the combat resolution. You can only move units in your entry location and the once per turn “rail” movement is critical to your strategy. Have you seen similar rules in other designs? Just curious. Thanks for all the great content. Love the channel!

Awesome review. Would you say you enjoyed Lamps more than this one? Of course it’s a bit more complex, longer and more of gamer‘s game of course but still
@ThePlayersAid2 жыл бұрын
Lamps is more my (Alexander) style of game, so I enjoyed it more. That doesn't make it better necessarily, though.

Very clever/interesting combat mechanic :)

Great review. But you got the combat rule wrong whem you role those three 1s. On that case the allies would also hit whith the britsh. You aplied the role to both sides complely. So with three 1s you can hit with two frenchs and one britsh.

Honestly, I think this game is too simple. I greatly prefer games like the lamps are going out, where you have to make hard, important decisions about everything. This feels like a game of risk and axis and allies mashed together, leading to an exceedingly simple and thus boring game.

Did not enjoy this one. Played it for around an hour but it felt much longer. Like a lot of euros I have played, the theme feels just pasted on.
