Today, we're reviewing and speed-testing Bronson RAW / Raw Next Generation Shieldless Skateboard Bearings (the best skate bearings, in my opinion) by bombing hills and timing my year old set (which I have yet to do any maintenance on whatsoever) versus a brand new set.
If you'd like to grab a set for yourself (or the skate tool/wheels), you can use these links:

Skated Swiss Bones for years. I got a set of these a little over a year ago; they quickly became my new favorite. A couple months ago I left my board down in my dank musty basement... They quite literally rusted tight. They'd hardly move at all. The horror!!!! So I boiled them, baked them dry, and oiled them up and they were like brand new again.

I assembled an 8 inch deck with 139mm trucks and 52mm 99a’s wheels along with bones reds and no risers. And started skateboarding again a few months back after 17 years of not riding a board. I have to admit, getting back on the board is quite fearsome. My feet forgot everything. And now I am stuck just learning to shove-it. It sucks bigtime and I feel like a total noob again.

@@AnttiBrax Hmmm maybe I'm not knowledgable when it comes to bearings. How so were they shit? And what bearings would you recommend?
@AnttiBrax
@AnttiBrax 3 жыл бұрын
@@Ohaffles They are not shielded so you get dirt in them and dirt destroys the balls and races. Because they're unshielded they can't use oil, because it attracts dirt, so they rust quickly. Because they rust quickly they need to be shipped in expensive nitrogen filled case. You're paying for the box, not the bearing. Buy shielded bearings and lube them regularly. Use spacers. The most important thing for your speed is the wheel. Bearings should be bought for longevity in mind and the Raws are designed to fail fast.

Bronson raws are tungsten coated, this removes the need for lubricant, which is why they dont need sheilds, because there is no oil to attract dirt. Also, graphite is a good lubricant that doesnt attract dirt.

Glad you've had a good experience with them man. I bought a set when they very first showed up at Fast Forward (RIP) here in Austin. They seemed a bit slower but I was also riding a harder wheel so I assumed it might just be that. After about a month I popped them out to see how they were holding up. The outer ring on one of them was cracked straight through and would barely spin and a couple others were slow but just dirty. I contacted NHS about the cracked one and they were nice enough to send a replacement. There was a mix up between the people I talked to, one of them was confused and thought I was actually a team rider for Bronson (somehow) and so in the end they actually ended up sending me 2 sets of Raws and a set of G3's. They said it was fine just to keep them. Unfortunately though, within a couple weeks another bearing ring cracked on the Raws. I contacted them again and never got an email back. I swapped to the 2nd set of Raws and within a week the inner cage had broken on 2 bearings and they would barely spin. I ended up just giving them to another guy at the skatepark who later told me they cracked for him too. On the bright side, the G3's are still going strong on my cruiser. Since then I've just gone back to Bones. I'm still riding a set of Reds I bought in February. Ride them for about a month until they dry out, then pop the shields. They're still just as fast as always as far as I can tell. Hopefully Bronson has improved the Raws quality since then but I still feel they're absurdly overpriced at $40.

Yes Marcel, you are on the right track :) Since you wear size 12 shoes, I would say to try to shoot for a board at the upper end of that range (8.38" if you can, but an 8.35 or an 8.25 should work just fine as well). And as an added bonus, that thing should flip really easily compared to an 8.5. Great to hear that you are back skating again after 5 years! Definitely let me know if you have any more questions :)

The Raws are great bearings but I think the advice of - Not having to clean them is a bad idea. If anything these take a little more maintenance then shielded bearings. Grime and sand and dirt 100 percent do get in them. I own 4 sets of them. I recommend getting the bones cleaning bottle and Bronson oil and cleaning and greasing them every few months or even sooner depending on how much use you put on them.
@jugo5139
@jugo5139 4 жыл бұрын
a little bit of maintenance almost any bearing will last indefinitely as long as the races the metal etc. don't break or pit. I used to have two sets of swiss and would alternate clean dirty etc.. every couple months will keep your bearings like brand new for a loooonnngg time. I noticed Bones even sells replacement shields and races. Super cheap in the long run. You can easy get years extra out of bearings if you take care of them

@@jugo5139 What's the idea behind that claim? These are dry bearings so they can't hold as much load as lubed bearings. Bronson didn't invent something that overthrows 200 years of scientific research. They just printed buzzwords on a package and sold merch to ignorant skaters.

Are they safe at speed? I love the idea, but I'm on long boards, if somethign gets in there and locks the wheels up, I'm liable to hit pavement at 20 miles an hour

The Raws are a scam. You pay extra for bearings that were taken off the assembly line before they were finished. This guy has no idea about how to use bearings. He does the unloaded spin test and suggests it is somehow relevant and he doesn't have spacers. Also he compares the bearings to old Raws instead of properly lubed shielded bearings. This "test" has absolute no useful information whatsoever. You're better off getting the Bronson G2. It costs a third of these, comes with shields on both sides so you can grease them up without having the stuff spill out and they come with spacers.
@AnttiBrax
@AnttiBrax 3 жыл бұрын
On a longboard you're doing much longer runs so your bearings get hotter. Thus you need to run the bearings with grease, not oil, so that even when hot, the lubricant maintains a film between the metal surfaces.
@asherael
@asherael 3 жыл бұрын
@@AnttiBrax i understand the appeal that if you don't have shields they don't trap grime in there, but worry that before it could be spat out, a grit could lock the wheels up, killing me to death, so I think you're right, and I'll stick with shielded bearings, as cool as I think the un-shielded bearings look (and sound, i'll admit, i'm a sucker for that sound) Thanks for your input, appreciate your experience and insight!
@AnttiBrax
@AnttiBrax 3 жыл бұрын
@@asherael Hah, the sound is the bearing killing itself. Silence is fast because it means you don't have metal banging on metal. The danger with raws is because they don't come with spacers you can't tighten the nut properly (well it's a problem with all bearings if you don't use spacerd but especially with these unshielded ones). If the bearing locks, the inner race starts spinning and on the left side it undoes the axle nut. You lose the wheel and you can imagine the rest. :/

Why not do the same test with some cheaper bearings? The major argument against them isn't that they're the worst bearings, it's that they're overpriced and the marketing is ridiculous. You're basically paying twice as much for them to pop the shields for you. Get some Flip HKD or Indy Black or Reds or Modus or any other bearing in that $15-20 range and you'll get the same or better performance for half the price. Pop the shields and bam you've also got "audible speed technology".
@AnttiBrax
@AnttiBrax 3 жыл бұрын
I love it that they first remove the shield, then they have to jump throug hoops to remove all lubrication that would attract dirt and because of that they need to ship them packed in in nitrogen to prevent them from rusting. You're not really paying for the bearing quality anymore. They're low quality bearings in a really expensive package.

Pseudoscientific methods, false logic reasoning, inaccurate information about bearing quality, and shitty maintenance practices. This video proves nothing. Get some damn shielded bearings and fill them with grease. The difference in friction is so small compared to running them dry or with oil, and grease will keep your balls and raceways protected and shiny even under heavy impacts (big drops), unlike oil which is more likely to move out of the way and not be able to project the bearing from metal to metal contact (which is what causes bearings to wear out and fail). Also, ceramic bearings are usually just ceramic balls and are much harder than the steel raceways they run on which is like running a train on asphalt. it digs into the road (raceways). Very negligible difference in friction between steel and ceramic. definitely not worth the extra cost.
