" no one cares about the story in doom" ironically there was meant to be a story in doom but john carmack being anti story told the story writer it was not important and made the guy up and leave. so you can blame him for why people have that mind set that doom does not need a story.

I'm aware. Carmack was right, though. Story may work in other games, but it only drags Doom down.

Doom can have a story as long as it is silly and doesn't take itself seriously, something like god hand's story for example.
@UnchainedEruption
@UnchainedEruption 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know where this notion comes from, but it's completely wrong. Doom did have a story, so did Doom II, and TNT and Plutonia, and Quake, and Quake II, and Half-Life, etc. There's a difference between brevity and not having a story. Just because Doom knew how to communicate a story well through the design of the maps/enemies, and how to fill in any remaining blanks with a few lines of text, it doesn't mean the writing was bad or absent. These games simply don't take you out of the gameplay to further the story--even the short end text crawl is skippable. In Doom 2016, the story is badly written, and most of it requires either reading in the pause screen or leaving you stuck waiting for the game to continue. Doom's storyline was never "silly" either. Obviously it's an absurd notion, but you're meant to take it at least somewhat seriously, that's where the horror comes from. Anyone who tells you horror wasn't a major part of Doom is full of shit. I don't know where this "the enemies are afraid of Doom Guy" idea came from, but it was never true before 2016.

Based on the footage, I think the reason you found the enemies so spongy was that you relied on the default attack more often than the special attack. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty certain the Pinky goes down in 2 rocket shots or a charged up / grenade attack from your shotgun. The mini-launchers replaced the default firing mechanic for the AR since it did way more splash damage.
@DWTerminator
@DWTerminator 4 жыл бұрын
I used the secondary fires constantly throughout the game and, as a result, the footage. A pinky doesn't go down that easily. I used the scope attachment on the HAR so it gave bonuses to headshot damage instead of me simply spewing out a bunch of micro-missiles.

@@DWTerminator I think I mixed them up with the Cacodemons. I finally got some decent footage of D16 and D3 for a video, and I just got to the level where Pinkies are introduced. I've noticed that most enemies have a counter or strategy to wear them down quickly, but I've forgotten what was the most effective counter to Pinkies other than hit their flanks. Ironically, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but the Marine feels faster in DOOM 3 than in DOOM 4 when you enable sprinting. It's not just for a brief dodge or quick dash across the map as I also found that playing DOOM 3 by going on the offensive like in D4 is the best way to enjoy that game. For example, the shotgun, which I always thought was RNG based, is a one-hit killer on MOST enemies if you charge in and blast their heads off point blank. I also noticed that you don't really even need the flashlight as most environments, enemies and projectiles use light in some manner. Why the Marine feels faster is something I cannot put my finger on. One key thing is that the BFG version (for me, on Switch) seems to have given the Marine a speed boost to where it makes the Slayer feel like he is walking by default. This could be the more claustrophobic environments, the portable mode, any FOV changes, or something else besides the sprint itself. Regardless, the issues with DOOM 16's inability to dodge until you get the Flight Mobility upgrade just makes that aspect of the game far worse to me than it was beforehand. When I was playing consistently, Plutonia was my favorite wad because of how challenging it was, and challenge aside, the maps are just brilliantly constructed. But certainly it is harder to get back into than Doom 1 or 2 because of that challenge. It's a good practice though for Serious Sam, which is like Plutonia's difficulty taken to the next level. TNT is okay. Most of the levels aren't that great, but it's not bad either. TNT does have custom music though, and the tracks are pretty good. The quality of TNT's maps also varies greatly, because it was made by a huge team of people, as opposed to Plutonia being constructed entirely by the Casali brothers, which is why it has a more consistent style of levels.

Sure, the first few levels are easy, but I think where it gets a little frustrating is on the really massive maps after you've been given all or almost all the guns, because then they just throw endless waves after waves at you. I wouldn't recommend doing a whole level in Plutonia from start to finish without saves, but then I wouldn't recommend playing SS either without being intimately familiar with the quicksave key.

Tbh, while there are some valid complaints here like the sound design and multiplayer, I think alot of your complaints are very subjective/nitpicky. The soundtrack is considered by most to be the highlight of these new games. And aside from some of the white noise tracks for the quiet moments, there were quite alot of memorable tracks in the game such as BFG Division, Rip and Tear, Flesh & Metal, Gore Nest, etc. I agree that the Assault Rifle and Plasma Rifle in particular run very quick through ammo, but I never really worried all that much about running out and being forced to glory kill. In the original Doom it was damn near impossible to run out of ammo for your guns outside of boss arenas. Meanwhile here while it is more possible to run out they still hand out quite a bit via packs scattered through the map and of course there's the chainsaw. Also on a side-note, the chainsaw is usually only a problem when you're using it on the *big* enemies, it's better to use it on the weaker enemies such as the possessed and imps. Plus there's been some slight tier-shifting with the demons. The complaint about the Pinky doesn't really make alot of sense considering in the original game he was only slightly above the fodder meanwhile in Doom 2016 he's a heavy. As for the Glory kills. While they are your main source of health, they're not really required. You can blast through plenty of enemies without having to GK them. The health packs are reasonably giving (unless you're on Nightmare). And like I already said, Ammo isn't really as easy to burn through as your making it out to be. While the closed off arenas are annoying, there's a technical reason behind it. The closing off was to accommodate the aggressive AI, without it then the game would end up a mess. As for the speed of the player, tbh I'd attribute that to the fact that the game is much more elaborate/designed in terms of layout. It'd be alot easier to bumb into things and screw up if the player speed was as fast as classic Doom. The original Doom games had fairly flat and open combat arenas so obviously speed could compliment *that.* And I don't really get your complaints about the story. Sure there were probably around 2 or 3 cutscenes that dragged on way too long, but aside from that there isn't really alot of emphasis on the story like you claim there is. The actual story you get is fairly bare-bones and it mostly takes a backseat for the gameplay. The juicy stuff is mostly hidden within the codex and environmental story-telling, which is arguably the best route to go. Instead of just saying "fuck the story", they have something there for fans who want more than just "Green guy shoots demons". It's been over 25 years, an actual story was bound to happen eventually. Etc. Good review though.

Spongy ennemies : use siege mode on gauss canon Not enough ammo : use the chainsaw on weak ennemies Btw why do you complain that you can barely avoid attacks when you say the jump accuracy rune is useless ? "Spongy ennemies : use siege mode on gauss canon" - Only applicable when it's fully upgraded. More importantly, why the hell would I just use a single gun the entire time? "Not enough ammo : use the chainsaw on weak ennemies" - Specifically said in the video that even with the chainsaw there were some fights where I almost entirely ran out of ammo. "Btw why do you complain that you can barely avoid attacks when you say the jump accuracy rune is useless ? It's one of the most useful and makes it WAY easier to avoid shots" - Jump control doesn't improve your speed. Speed is the problem here.

Pathfinder basically *is* D&D. It was Paizo carrying on the D&D 3.5 ruleset with their own (albeit rather generic) setting. As for Kingmaker? It's one of the most iconic adventure paths (published campaigns) for the tabletop. It's certainly interesting to see how they've tried to translate that to a PC game, but be warned that you've gotten yourself into a game that's around 100 hours for a single non-completionist playthrough, and that's before you factor in the DLC's. That's the main reason I haven't finished it yet.

I've played the game one and a half runs now--I'm midway on my second run with the Enhanced Edition--and I will say you gotta really be willing to play around with the alignment systems to get the most out of the systems. My favorite way to play is a Lawful Evil character who lives by Machiavellian code of ethics. Basically, appear a hero to your subjects; act like a villain to your mortal enemies. There are SO many decisions that feel catered to that playstyle that you get the most value from that type of run. As DW stated, the game is essentially an adventure path adaptation made into a game. Chris Avellone was the narrative director, so he is likely responsible with how all the multiple books work together to make one complete storyline. The narrative will often feel like you are being sidetracked from the main story, but that makes the whole campaign really interesting because it always manages to do something new with each chapter. I will admit that the two chapters feel kind of dull because it's all the set-up for the barony mechanic, which is the main focus for the rest of the game. The side characters are also kind of bland, but I think that's mainly due to how old the campaign is, so they couldn't stray too far from the source material. I have't gotten far enough to tell if the kingdom management system is still unfair, so you might have to turn on invincibility mode for that part of the game. (Maybe the Enhanced Edition fixes it, and I'm overblowing things.)

I really liked Doom 2016 as a whole, but there are a lot of glaring issues that drag it down to just a fun experience imo. I actually like the the upgrade system for the weapons a lot, and when you get a few fully decked it feels really satisfying. My biggest issue is the one you mentioned of a lack of ammo. I get maybe they thought limiting it would make you have to play more versatile, but in practice I had to resort to the pistol. It would often become a chore of hoping I can get just enough ammo to eek by while being killed every few seconds because I literally only have the pistol.

Most weapons have been done dirty in this game for sure. When I had the option to upgrade the Heavy AR the first time, of course I choosed the micro missiles, only to realise that after using up those I'm once again stuck with a rather wimpy AR. Only once I tried out the scope and after a while unlocked the devastator rounds and started going for headshots was the point when I was finally satisfied with it's firepower - it should be like this by default and then the small amount of ammo for it wouldn't be an issue. The plasma rifle is OK,but both the ones in Doom and Doom 3 are superior to it without a doubt.The heat blast ability is pretty awesome though. The rocket launcher is borderline a joke here,in Doom and even in Doom 3 you always had the sense when using it that,yes, a big chunk of metal filled with explosives and propelled by a rocket engine has just been fired from the launcher in your hands at high speed, and whatever it collides with will be an unrecognizable mess. Here it's just a mild annoyance to most enemies, I get the impression that throwing the launcher itself at the motherfuckers would do more damage. The only truly enjoyable weapons for me were the Chaingun in the AA config(again,it should be like this by default),the Gauss cannon in siege mode and the BFG. From what I've seen of the gameplay of Eternal, it seems that there's even more emphasis on glory kills and melee combat,so I don't have high hopes for it, it will probably be a bargain bin buy for me,once the price goes down really low. Unless of course the reviews and the post release gameplay will absolutely blow my mind...

Okay, so I've come back to this video after playing the game again my second run (and third, if you count arcade mode), and I think there is a lot more small things most people will overlook that also impact one's overall enjoyment for the game. The biggest culprit for any speed problems are the runes themselves. The Flight Mobility upgrade greatly extends your dodging and bunny-hoping capabilities, but you don't get that one until around Mission 7 / 8 after you get out of Hell (the Destroyed Facility.) In addition, if you get the Speed Up rune after a Glory Kill and then speed up the Glory Kill animations, you do get what can be considered a stupid amount of speed in this game. The only problem is that these aspects are all spread out across the game as well as feel like needless restrictions unless you experiment with the combinations in the campaign (or the loadouts for Arcade mode.) Additionally, when judging the effectiveness of every gun, if you ignore the secondary fires and mastery upgrades they often will make the guns appear weaker than they really are. Some things are true to doom like weapon counters to enemies such as the Pulse Rifle heat burst against those annoying shield enemies. Others, however, feel like a consequence of the upgrade system itself. For example, the shotgun itself is only good if you get stupidly close to weak enemies. If you use the charge shot, then it will likely kill soldiers and imps. If you use the charge shot twice with the damage boost unlocked from the Mastery element, then you can OFTEN take down a Pinky from behind. (It's not always consistent, which annoys me, but it is reliable enough that I often found myself killing Pinkies on Ultra Nightmare with them.) The same can also be said of the Super Shotgun with the Quad upgrade, which shows how weak that gun feels when you need four shots for a double-barrel shotgun to function correctly. Again, I don't really like how these needless systems get in the way of the gameplay. This issue was something I first worried would happen when IGN/Gamespot showcased the gameplay demonstration in 2014/2015. Turns out my fears were correct as I think the only solution for this problems would be to implement a "True DOOM" mode where you don't have all that excess fat.

DWTerminator I just realized. It’s incredibly ironic how - even though the reboot is played up to be this wide-scale slaughter of demons - Doom’s actual gameplay showcases small skirmishes at best. No matter how good you are, the slow movement and arena-style level design will not allow players to properly go through, let’s say, a hundred demons on-screen. Classic Doom practically welcomed slaughter maps and it generally worked perfectly, considering _its_ mechanics.

I think Mick Gordon's soundtrack for this game is pretty consistent with the industrial metal Quake 2 had for its soundtrack. I think repetitious turn-up music has its strengths because with a more complex composition you risk moments in the game not matching up to moments in the soundtrack, like if there's a swell during a moment of inactivity or a wind-down during a significant moment. By using more repetitive tracks Mick Gordon managed to mix them into a dynamic score that matches up to gameplay which added a lot to the game for me and for many others. I also think a more traditional Mettalica/Iron Maiden style score with treble heavy guitar would have been drowned out and distorted by the sound effects or vice versa, while a more bass heavy soundtrack lets the music coexist a little better with the SFX.
@DWTerminator
@DWTerminator 4 жыл бұрын
Except Quake 2's soundtrack is clearly still proper metal that just dips into the industrial side. Doom 2016 delves so far into the electronic side of things that it practically becomes dubstep that's trying to hide itself with incredibly down-tuned guitars, and ends up being obnoxious noise. Think about how much better this would be with a dynamic version of Quake 2's style of soundtrack. As for a more Maiden/Metallica-esque sound... the sound effects are so soft and low-impact that they're not going to drown *anything* out.

@@DWTerminator I've listened to both the Quake 2 and Doom soundtracks quite a lot and I think both of them have a mix of more metal track and more industrial ones, people just remember the more metal tracks from Quake 2 (not to mention the rest of Sonic Mayhem's catalog sounds a *lot* more electronic and industrial; their recent Doomsday EP sounds like straight up KMFDM). I don't think Doom's soundtrack sounds at all like dubstep; dubstep is something a lot more specific than bass heavy electronic music. This is at most somewhat modernized industrial music, which I think fit with the 90s nostalgia pretty well. I also didn't find the sounds soft, but I used some pretty solid headphones with a preamp so maybe that's why? The explosions were admittedly weak but weapons like the machine gun (particularly the micro missiles), plasma rifle, super shotgun, and especially the Gauss cannon all sounded great to me, not to mention the monster noises.
@DWTerminator

Quake 2's soundtrack is almost nothing but metal. There are very few tracks even in the expansions that dip more into the ambient industrial side of things, and even then it's that "classic" 90's industrial feel. Doom 2016 on the other hand is a near-constant stream of blasting your eardrums out with high-pitched squeals and "WUB" nonsense. I use Audio-Technica M50x's. Even with good quality headphones like that and the volume cranked up, the sound effects are still too low-impact.

1) I am surprised you liked the aesthetic. I thought it was mostly a resounding meh. Hell looks like its covered in piss for some reason. I mean it's hell for fuck's sake and all you could do is a bunch of generic multiplayer arenas and lame platforming sections. Hell would be such an interesting setting to go all out and have all kinds of trippy visuals. Like maybe you could have a level where everything is made of flesh and it rains blood occasionally, or maybe have some crazy architecture like Constantine's mansion in Thief the dark project. 2) I don't hate the soundtrack but I really don't like it either. The e1m1 remix is pretty good but that's about it. It's surprising how many people praise this boring ass soundtrack. 3) I found the slayer's testaments to be rather cringey to be honest. It seemed like the developers were just fanboying over the doom slayer constantly emphasizing how much of a badass he is, something you don't see in the gameplay. The gameplay is mostly fighting half a dozen spongy ass enemies inside a cramped multiplayer arena. Nothing badass about that. The original doomguy was far more badass and the game didn't have to remind you about it all the time. 4) I haven't played the game but it seems more like painkiller than serious sam, especially the way the health works and the more cramped level design.

a HK take 3 point blank shot from SSG to go down in 2016 and eternal. Same amount of damage as doom 2. 2 full face SSG for down a revenant. The fact some ennemy seems bulletspongy come from 2 factor. 1) effective nerf of some weapon like the shotgun base fire (3 shot for a basic solider) or the rocket launcher,just don't use it whithout altfire. But once you got the SSG and the gauss canon,GK became basically non existent (except if low life). The 2nd factor for ennemy resistance is the speed of the game,at the opposite of the old doom,ennemy are far more mobile and hitting all the pellets of SSG on them can be pretty hard. But if you remember OG doom,there is 3 episode after episode 1 and in those episode especially if you play in pistol start there is an awful lot of baron and cacodemon to kill without a lot of rocket,and a baron take 15 shell to go down. So yeah bulletspongy ennemy always been a part of doom gameplay except in episode 1 (which is the best of ID official doom,don't count plutonia)

Doom 1 and 2 are fun but you can absolutely feel their age when you play them, and it's not all positive. That's why you have countless mods and source ports to make them feel more modern. Doom 1 and 2 were both great games and absolutely crucial for the evolution of the gaming industry, but they were far from perfect. For the style of gameplay Doom is going for, no, it couldn't really learn anything from game design post '93 other than losing the hitscan enemies. Forgot to mention, I disagreed with your take on the ammo running out; I actually thought the opposite was the problem. Part of the design of a Doom level is where health and ammo are placed, and how much of each is placed in a map radically alters how you play. Think of E4M1, where the only health on UV was 10 health bonuses, vs a map where health is plentiful. It forces you to play more conservatively or be more liberal in your consumption. It alters how much risk you're willing to take. That level of nuance--like every other--is gone in Doom 2016 because a) there's always enough health and ammo lying around before or after an arena to fill you up completely, and b) inside an arena you can always replenish most of your health or ammo with glory kills or chainsaw respectively. The game gives you back free health when you're low on it; it's not much different mechanically from a game where health regenerates instead of needing med packs. So like games with regenerating health, the only way the player can ever be put in danger is if too many enemies attack at once before you have a chance to regenerate/replenish. This is another reason why the devs are forced to make bad gameplay decisions like enemies taking out most of your health with a single hit or having too many enemies on the map to artificially try (and fail) to create some sort of challenge.

News flash, the glory kills shouldn't even be a thing. Doom should just be shooting demons. They dumb down the ammo to make you use the glory kills, which is just stupid. By the way, try goin' around punching demons in the original doom, l promise you that you will die. Ps. That is why you use guns, and why the guns have HUGE amounts of ammo. That way it is fast paced gameplay, not stopping every few seconds to watch a cutscene of doom guy killing a foe.

And just to add to the whole weapons being weak thing, yeah I agree that plasma rifle and single shot shotgun aren't too hot mid to late game but...you can down a Baron with two easy shots from the siege cannon, then combine the fact that you can skip the reload process for the super shotgun (which is actually quite powerful especially when upgraded, can down a hell knight in two shots) by quickly switching to a weapon like the rocket launcher, firing it and swapping back, increasing DPS dramatically. If you even look at any speedruns you can see how fast the fights can go with the right tools.

And once more with runes and equipment, it's odd saying they don't do much when three of them directly tackle the criticisms that you had earlier regarding ammo and speed. Rich Get Richer + Armored Offensive is pretty meta combo which results in constant spam of most powerful weapons and if you have equipment power on, it means siphon grenades add to your armor reserves as well and with a decent chunk (20-ish). Sure, extra stagger speed is eh, whatever but extra air control saved me on Ultra-Nightmare fights many times since it's not that you're too slow to dodge the AI projectiles but it's that they predict where you're going meaning that juking movement is a major factor as well when it comes to avoiding damage. And glory kill related runes are just fun to put on when picking up a berserk. It's not Doom 2.5 where you might magically think you should have 50 rockets maximum to boot when not having a backpack.

Have you heard other works by Mick Gordon? The Doom 2016 soundtrack is FAR from his best work. I won't quite rail on it as hard as DW here, but the man is capable of SO much better. and you're argument of "It got awards and a LOT of people like it, so it must be good" Yeah... A LOT of people freaking like Nickelback, really crap K-pop, and in the '90s bloody boy bands were winning awards... Would you class ANY of that as objectively "Good"? *Just because the herd likes it does not mean it is in any way good.* Doom 2016 is not at all a "Bad" game, it's a game of coming so very close but not quite hitting the notes and sometimes missing "the music between the notes". As Music seems to be your thing? : It's got the talent but Like Led Zeplin Instead of actually applying that talent is just sort of noodles on-stage in a semi-drunken possibly drug-addled stupor. You don't feel "ripped off" from witnessing such" but the whole damn time in absolutely every aspect you absolutely *know* that they are not applying themselves. Doom 2016 is pretty much a case of slamming pieces of Splatterhouse into painkiller, giving the creation a semi-industrial soundtrack, and a Doom coat of paint. I genuinely *Like* all of the above, but here it's not the best combination and it seems to lack focus. It does not know what it wants to be. The Multiplayer, on the other hand, is pants on head DUMB. bad decisions all around.

@@reignick1133 Yes, I have heard his Killer Instinct, Wolfenstein and Prey soundtracks and they all are great in their own right. Cinder's theme is amazing but what Doom achieves for me personally is that music which becomes an integral part of gameplay as it reinforces the mayhem the player causes. Reycevick has good video about it if you're ever interested that delves deeper into the soundtrack's integration with gameplay. Now I'm not gonna cuss anyone out for not liking it and throw a hiss fit over it, that's fine. The only thing I wanted to point out was that if he won all that recognition, then there is *something* there beyond just throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks that garnered that recognition and just saying it's a waste of talent. That's before taking the reviewer's clear personal dislike of that sound genre into account. I agree multiplayer ain't the biggest thing in the world, it has certainly issues that make it far from a peak arena combat experience. So I'm glad ID is doing their multiplayer stuff in-house this time instead of outsourcing it. Still some bit of fun to be had I suppose. What I think some people had on their minds with Doom 2016 was it to be something like Dusk but just with the coat and paint of Doom.

What i find incredibly funny about the Doom 2016 fanbase is that it's mainly comprised of console owners that weren't even born when og Doom came out. Fans of D44M usually parrot specific marketing phrases used to promote the game. Almost like they don't really know why they like it so much, or they don't want to admit that they enjoyed it mainly because it was their first time experiencing something that isn't a CoD style shooting gallery. If all i had were boring console shooters, D44M would probably look like a masterpiece to me too. I think that this whole game was originally conceived during Brutal Doom's explosion in popularity, they saw all the memes and press around the mod, and thought that it was what the fans wanted out of the game. But that's their core mistake, Brutal doom exploded in popularity specifically because it attracted people who weren't fans of the original Doom, because it fundamentally changed how the game was played. Your mistake on the other hand is thinking they wanted to appeal specifically to Doom's core audience in the first place. They didn't, they wanted the game to have mass appeal. Just like they did with Wolfenstein before, they used the Doom name to draw your attention. Sure, they probably wanted to satisfy the Doom fanbase at the time, but not because they care about the brand or franchise, but because it looked like those are the people that would draw in the most money. It just so happened, that what they saw as the Doom fandom were people that were only drawn in because of one single mod, that had nothing to do with the rest of the game. Doom Eternal will most likely not be an improvement, due to the simple fact that they already have a formula that sold well, they don't need the old Doom fanbase anymore, because they already established their own.

Wow you're far more generous to the game than it deserves. It's ironic, I think after I first played Doom 2016, I was defending it on your original MTO, but it didn't take much longer for me to realize just how shit it was. I think you are mistaken in saying it is close to being good, but ever so slightly off. I think from the ground up, every design choice is bad, to the point where the whole thing is simply not salvageable. First off, it doesn't look or sound like Doom. Doomguy is more Master Chief than Doom Guy/Ranger/Sarge (All the id Software protagonists look the same, and with good reason). The "demons" look less demonic and more like disgusting monsters. Although the general look is close enough to Doom for every enemy or texture to be recognizable as what it's supposed to be, it doesn't look the same. Again, different doesn't necessitate being bad, but it just misses the whole point of Doom. It's supposed to be scary. Fun, action-packed, and scary--the key elements of any sci-fi/action flick. But Doom 2016 is just cheesy, and part of that comes from imitating Brutal Doom/Project Brutality. Mick Gordon's soundtrack is disgusting horseshit. All the people calling it metal need to get a taste of Black Sabbath, Megadeth, or Judas Priest's discography. Subjective nitpicking aside, the level design and gameplay are simply terrible. You're right in that the guns are too weak/enemies are bullet-spongey, and you are also right in that the reason for this is to shoehorn in the stupid glory kills. Yes, they look awesome...the first time you see them. But once you fall into the repititive pattern of gameplay, they just become lengthy animations that takes you out of the action, and ones you're sick of seeing over and over again. It's just boring, and frankly, most of the animations aren't even that cool to begin with. Snapping the Hell Knight's head? Pulling a plug out of the Mancubus? That's child's play compared to the gibbing sprites in og Doom, let alone Brutal Doom's executions. (As a side note, it's a complete joke just how quickly it takes for the blood and corpses to disappear. They fade away before so much as hitting the floor. Can't be Knee Deep in the Dead when there's no corpses lying around. I know every 3D game has had this since Quake, but in the Quake games at least the bodies were there for a minute or so before disappearing, so that by the time they went away the player had likely already moved on and forgotten about it. Going away within seconds rather breaks the immersion of gory effect.) The maps, apart from maybe the second or third level, are astoundingly linear. What is the point of an automap--and I will concede, they did at least nail the aesthetic of the automap--if the entire map is linear, and worse still, the early parts of a level is completely locked off after a certain point, even if there's secrets there you missed? Of course, levels need not even exist; the entire game is just one arena after another, Serious Sam-style, as you and most other FPS-aficionados recognized. However, Serious Sam knows how to make interesting and unique encounters because its arenas aren't all identical and the choice of enemies it spawns in are not identical. For example, spawning one of those chain gunner scorpion things at a height provides a different experience than spawning them in at the ground; the shape of the arena matters; what other enemies are paired with an enemy matters; etc. None of that nuance exists in Doom '16. They all just spawn in the same, small space, and it's usually the same roster of enemies, which usually are best killed by the same type of weapon (SSG for Hell Knight; Guass Cannon for Cacos, etc.) I don't know how you say the game is easy--maybe it's ridiculously predictable and unchallenging--but I remember dying a fuck ton on Nightmare. It feels like a grind just to get to the next "checkpoint." Even when I've reached a relatively safe area where I would have saved if I could, I still have to do it all over again because of some small mistake right before the next checkpoint. Speaking of Nightmare, enemies are just as stupid, they just take out 90% of max health in one hit. I actually didn't object to the inclusion of upgrades or rune challenges, but they create an element of randomness that's hard to account for. Since the developer doesn't know which upgrade the player will choose to get, that makes deciding which enemies to place in later levels harder to do well. Inevitably, this leads to the game being unbalanced. The way it was for me is that the middle of the game was the hardest I think, and then by the end even Barons were pretty easy to kill because all upgrades are maxed out and unlocked. One of the ways the devs failed to compensate for a maxed-out arsenal being overpowered was by just swarming the player with an unfair amount of enemies, and then forcing him to use the insta-kill options to take them out. They took the chainsaw and BFG, two of the most unique and iconic weapons Doom created, and turned them into insta-kills that feel cheap to use. You don't feel badass by using them. It's like taking the easy way out. Oh you're not good enough to actually kill the enemies yourself? Here, use this cheat, you loser. But in reality, it's not the player's fault the devs intentionally chose to pack an arena with an unfair number of enemies, intending for the player to die if he doesn't use the BFG or Chainsaw. Similar reasoning applies for the powerups: they're technically optional, but if you don't use them, you will almost certainly fail, but using them feels like cheating. In short, you're forced to feel pathetic because the devs don't know how to create a genuine sense of challenge, in part because the broken upgrade system makes enemies far too difficult (in the mid-game) or far too easy (in the late game.) This is why I say the game is fundamentally bad at its core. It can't be fixed by a set of small changes, because the entire game is built around this arena-combat system that does not work, and cannot work. There's simply no way a designer could introduce enemies in a new environment that would be fun, because the basic game doesn't lend itself to much variation. Every arena and encounter is the same. This is why Doom 2016 dies and the original Dooms never die. You can always think up something new that hasn't been done before inside Doom's software renderer, let alone the GZDoom engine. Sigil is proof enough of this. You can't do that in the new Doom. It will always be the same combat, which is just as boring as it is infuriating to play.

Not just that but the old doom games had even sponger demons. Chaingun can kill Mancubus in the new Doom games in 4 seconds while in Doom 2 it takes forever. Replenishing ammo was also purely reliant ammo pickups unlike the new games which you can get ammo from pickups and a simple 2 second chainsaw kill which gives an explosion of ammo. So when you ran out of ammo in the old doom games it was 20 times more frustrating because you have to search across the map for ammo so his complaints are retarded. The new Doom games have less overall enemies in fights, have a lot less health, guns do more damage and can replenish ammo by pickups and chainsaw. 64 shells and 35 rockets was more than enough for this game in fact it was too much ammo for the game.

Same, really. I played a bit of Doom 64 back in the day but didn't have an N64 at the time so I could never finish it. Been looking forward to the port for a while.

@@DWTerminator It seems to be based on Doom 64 EX (because it is). The very first port that Samuel Villarreal completed before Powerslave EX, and then working for Nightdive Studios (Turok 1 and 2, System Shock, Blood). "Kex is the codename for the engine that’s being used by Doom 64 EX. This is a heavily modified Doom engine which will eventually be used as a base to create original games and remakes of other classic console games that were never ported to the PC". You can use it, but you need the ROM of the game in order for it to work.

@@DWTerminator unironically one of the worst things i've ever read. my guy, you sound like a boomer grandpa who's entire view on heavy music is defined by obnoxious 1980s hair metal. wanna go on to a music theory level? you blatantly ignore the chords, progressions, dynamics, timbre, etc of the music by this dumbfuck comment.

@@DWTerminator It's not even that, you're just insanely ignorant about electronic music, at least heavier industrial, electronic, and hell, a ton of metal. You have shown that know jack shit about metal and industrial, and your entire basis of "metal" is built on a flawed perception of "NO ELECTRONICS REEEEE!!!" You blatantly ignore simple music theory and genre progressions because you can't have anything that sounds out of left field because that wouldn't be "hurr durr PYURE METAL" you're an ignorant dunning kruger and you don't know what the fuck you're talking about rateyourmusic.com/release/album/mick-gordon/doom-original-game-soundtrack/ refer to this to fix your flawed genre perceptions You don't have to like the soundtrack, but stop saying dumb shit and stop acting like you know what you're talking about when you clearly fucking don't.

@@lawsonashurst7314 I was born in 2000 and I think the music is bad. I love electronic Music, Hitman contracts has some great electronic music. But doom 2016's is a obnoxious mess that's near ear-rape levels and it for me, becomes ear-rape on any prolonged amount of time spent playing.

Criticizing the game for adding optional collectible lore? Saying that unskippable cut scenes are an issue when that happens like what? 3 maybe 4 times the entire game. None of which lasts more than 60 seconds if that Saying you can't dodge most attacks which is straight up bull and i have no problem recording and linking gameplay here doing just that. You may not be able to dodge them but i certainly can. And you're not forced into using glory kills. You get dropped health for every enemy you kill when you're low no matter how you finish them. I don't even need to use the system at all unless i have to for a boss kill I certainly wouldn't call these enemies sponges. Sponges don't stagger when you hit then and these demons will certainly get staggered when hit. I don't mean the glory kill stun either i mean a rocket or double barrel to the face can and will force an enemy to react. That's not sponge brother. Sponge is wolfenstein Youngblood where they don't react to shit. I could go on

"Criticizing the game for adding optional collectible lore? " - For which the game is constantly throwing popups at you, which can interfere with when you're trying to get to the upgrades section of the menu. Even worse when very few people are even interested in it to begin with. "Saying that unskippable cut scenes are an issue when that happens like what? 3 maybe 4 times the entire game." - Shouldn't be happening in the game *at all*. "Saying you can't dodge most attacks which is straight up bull" - I said you can't dodge them unless you have a good amount of distance between you and your enemies, which is precisely the case. It's also the way you aren't supposed to be playing the game. You're supposed to be getting up close and personal most of the time. "And you're not forced into using glory kills. You get dropped health for every enemy you kill when you're low no matter how you finish them." - Didn't say anything about the game *forcing* you to use them unless boss fights are concerned. I specifically said the game emphasizes them too much and you'll end up using them just to save ammo. "I certainly wouldn't call these enemies sponges." - Then you would simply be wrong. "Sponges don't stagger when you hit then and these demons will certainly get staggered when hit." - Not really. You can easily see throughout the footage where most of the time they'll just tank the hits like it's nothing. Even then, just because an enemy is knocked around by your shots doesn't make them *not* a bullet sponge. "Sponge is wolfenstein Youngblood where they don't react to shit." - It's a much more egregious kind of bullet sponge, that's for sure. Doom 2016's enemies are still sponges though. "I could go on" - Feel free.
