Sorry dude it's pretty obvious you just didn't get the game. An opinion is one thing, but you just haven't picked up the mechanics at all. Your mobility is very bad, you spend most of your time on the ground and it almost looks like you're aiming with a controller at times. You don't use a frost grenade in the entire hour, that's just pathetic. Arguably the most important gadget in the game, stops enemies for 3 or 4 seconds AND gives back health. Also half the review you have no armor and it took you 25 minutes into the video before you even used a flame belch. You complain about lack of ammo but miss a lot of your shots. Your aim is tragic. You try to melee demons constantly and then waste blood punch as well. You continually try to shoot the weak spots on the Mancubus and Arachnotron with normal shots, which you still haven't learned does next to nothing? No comment on the Marauder at all? I will also never understand the complaint of "you're forced to play a certain way and have to memorize abilities and weapons". That's like complaining about having to learn combos in a fighting game. You're complaining about a game requiring the player to get better at it and learn the mechanics? Also every single game ever made has an "optimal way" to play it.

I agree, GMan, this game has a lot of depth to what monsters are better killed by what weapons--which mind you, was a strong component of the og Doom and Doom II--yet, and a lot of people miss this, the game does NOT force you to play a certain way. Even the Marauder, who is best killed by the SSG, can still be killed with other weapons, such as the Ballista. But most enemy types have a number of ways to be defeated. For example: Pinky can be blood punched to instantly kill. He can also be shot in back like in '16, but now you have double dash so it is easier to get behind him. He can also be frozen and then finished off. You can launch a rocket from afar and then remote detonate when it's behind him. You can burn, dash back, launch frags. You can use brute force with chaingun. You can microwave beam him, follow up with ballista while stunned. And that's just one enemy. Cacos can be glory killed with shotgun grenade launcher or lock-on rockets or instantly destroyed with ballista bolt or launched to with meathook for an up close & personal, point-blank SSG blast. Pain Elementals are also vulnerable to Ballista Bolts, as well as Mini-Rockets on heavy cannon. You can also use the plasma shields from enemies to create makeshift explosive barrels. Cyber-Mancubus, who was an annoying bullet sponge last time now goes down much quicker and more easily than even the regular Mancubus, once you figure out how to use your Blood Punch, followed by SSG. However, he can still be taken out a myriad of other ways. In fact, the guns are so much fun to use that even after unlocking the UnMakyr, I still find it just as fun to use the auto-shotgun and spray hot shells upon mine enemies, as it is to cut a Tyrant in half with the Ballista Arc Wave. Not only is lowering cooldowns for the flame belch and grenades a priority in terms of progresion, to get shield/health/blood punch refueled much faster, but the SSG mastery is also worth unlocking as fast as possible, because you can just grapple on to basic enemies, SSG, and get armor without needing a flame belch. In short, every enemy and situation has a plethora of ways to be defeated, yet certain styles can be especially damaging, so the game rewards you for managing your resources and understanding how to best approach different enemy types, despite not limiting your arsenal in any way. You can still use any gun on any enemy, if so you choose, and ammo is actually far more available despite the small ammo limit, thanks to how easy it is to refuel via unlimited chainsaw.

The lore is absolutely the worst part of the game. It's like a 14 year olds fanfiction on why Doomguy is so cool featuring a race of jobber space knights who they desperately want us to like only they all come across as generic and boring. 2016 managed to pull off its story by having Doomguy not caring in the slightest outside of killing demons, Eternal went all out on its own insanity and the only good part of it is the "skip" button. I actually like the gameplay, though. A few minor annoyances here and there (too much platforming, levels too linear, I don't understand why blood punch is a thing multiple playthroughs later, the BFG charges don't exist in 90% of levels so you can't go back and have fun with it) but otherwise it's entertaining enough.

Funny thing about the pop-up tutorials, I turned those off. The game definitely encourages you to use certain combos or weapons, but its not necessary. I beat the Gladiator boss fight without even know you could stagger/glory kill it to take a big chunk of health off. Played on Ultra-Violence too, which was a decent challenge for me at least, died more times than I care to remember but every time I did I never felt like it was the game's fault. I felt that I had to get better, learn how the enemies work, which to prioritise. By the final level I was zipping around and reacting to things faster than I ever thought I could and that is an amazing feeling. The game ultimately made me a better player. I love that I have to keep thinking and not just mindlessly shoot everything with one or two weapons. Does the game have problems? Oh god yes! Getting trapped into corners from aggressive enemies with no way out is annoying, and I agree that the last couple of bosses are more aggravating than fun.

It has a lot of dislikes because factually false statements like saying the game can be played only one way. The video also has very lazy editing. His own gameplay footage contracts his own points. As an example he says game has scarce ammo pickups but his own footage shows constant ammo pickups in background. He is also misleading his reviewers by not telling them he has played the game in stretched span of 11 months which is why his opinions on the game being one blur should be taken with grain of salt.

You really don't have to pick between health and armor. Here's what I do: 1) max out abilities that lower flame belch cooldowns first. 2) find a group of fodder demons to roast, not just 1 on his own. 3) burn them, then drop a grenade next to them, and dash away. 4) Enjoy the rain of armor shards, instantly maxing you out to 150 armor. 5) In between flame belches, use the SSG underbarrel meathook on fodder-to-medium tier demons to get more armor. And I played start to finish Ultra-Violence on my first play-through. I can't speak for Nightmare, but on UV armor is definitely useful. Sure, you lose it quickly, but unlike Doom '16, you now have the option to gain it back very quickly also.
@UnchainedEruption
@UnchainedEruption 3 жыл бұрын
Also: I noticed you used the shotgun to get fodder demons into stagger state. This is a bad idea. The Heavy Cannon is much better suited because you can precisely control how much damage you do before outright killing the demon and missing that stagger state. It also is obviously a lot faster than the slow shotgun, and saves shells for your SSG.
@johnspartan2096

armor is life saver in NM,the strat of armor shard fountain with group of fodder/flame and grenade is mandatory.Can't blame the reviewer for not knowing that. In fact lot of eternal mechanics will become clear in a 2nd or even a 3rd PT.The game have replay value,only problem is if someone don't like the game at the 1st run,there is few chance he want to invest time in a 2nd run.

Ok, look man, I respect your opinion, I think you should have played through a few more times before making this, maybe you would've started to enjoy and understand it. But some games aren't for some people. I can acknowledge that Dark Souls is a near flawless masterpiece, but I don't enjoy that game. The game gives people way more creativity than you give it credit for, here are some examples. The game tutorial says "you can shoot the sticky bomb or frag grenade into a cacodemons mouth for a glory kill" but that is just one option, you gotta experiment a little. You can hit the caco with the arbalest ballista then meathook in with a super shotgun and if its fully upgraded, you can get some armor back, and kill it twice as fast. The game tutorial says you have to wait for the marauders eyes to glow green, then you blast him with SSG and ballista, but, you can 1. hit him several times and stunlock him with frag grenades, or 2. (the way I do it) is to wait for his eyes to glow green, then hit him with the arbalest ballista, then full auto shotgun+frag grenades to stun lock him. The game outright tells you there is 2 ways to kill a doom hunter, you can destroy his sled, (best done with the blood punch but can be done with meathook SSG+Ballista combos and many others) or you can destroy his armor with the plasma rifle then kill him like any other demon. I dont believe the game tells you that the chaingun deals massive damage to dread/hell knights/ barons of hell I can off the top of my head think of 5 ways to kill a pain elemental. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f558gZaZutm1ZIU.html that is a link to Under the Mayo stunlocking the baron to the point he cant even fight back. Faltering is DOOM Eternals most important mechanic, i saw you use very few grenades that entire video, so here is a guide to the faltering system. Easily makes the game 10x more fun and opens up so much creative opportunities. I could go on, and i will if you like, but I just think you didnt give this game enough of a chance. Again, I dont mean this in a "lol git gud" way, I want you to have fun, I want you to be able to enjoy the game like i and so many others do.

A lot of the earlier PS2 games have permanently inverted vertical axes on the analog sticks. It was a carryover from the PS1, when they were still trying to figure out how analog sticks worked and just usually went with what made sense for flight controls. After a few years in the PS2's life cycle it became standard to at least let you choose inverted or non-inverted.

"If this is where the DOOM Series is headed, then I want no part of it." This is the only reasonable statement you made in this video, maybe apart from the graphics section. I will explain why. Your claim about the sound design being mediocre is laughable. The suit sounds, at any level of play (if you were to utilize all of the mechanics) is vital to the experience, the reason being that you need to hear the flame belch recharge, so that you can gain armor to push forward more without getting your legs broken. You need to hear the ice bomb recharge, so that you can know when to freeze enemies when things are getting intense. You need to hear the gas recharge so you can know that you are ready to *meathook* to a fodder enemy to chainsaw them. All of it is so important to the combat loop, and you completely missed the point there. Also, complaining about the music being too loud? For being such a fanboy of the classic Doom games, you don't seem to recall that so much of the experience was listening to the music. In cases like "At Doom's Gate," "I Sawed The Demons," "Intermission from DOOM" as well as many others, you would actually play to the beat! The loud and "repetitive" music was okay then, but it isn't now? The gun sounds are tuned to not overshadow the music and the suit sounds. I doubt that even crossed your mind. Next stop on the train of nonsense: the lore complaints. Your main objections to the lore are that you have to read the codex entries to understand half of it. You would have been mostly right about that until you claimed that the game was "unplayable" if you didn't do so, but that's beside the point. You obviously don't like the story - so why do a review on it? Why did you sit through "terrible writing" to make a part of a review you didn't want to do? You could have easily said, "I don't follow the lore of the modern DOOM games, so I won't cover it in this video." No, you decided to put yourself through something you didn't like, for what? To bash this game even harder? The game gives you so many opportunities to just ignore the story. It's a solid 15 minutes of runtime that most people should disregard when watching this, among other things. Plus, a lot of the things you claimed about the lore were just straight-up wrong. Typical for someone doing a review like this. Here, we look to our left to see: your god-awful combat review. You play like shit. That's understandable, given that it's your first time - but it still brings down your review, given the fact that you refused to use or had practically no knowledge of mechanics that made the game easier, while you sat and complained about the game being too overwhelming. I can't begin to describe how wrong you were about the flame belch serving almost no purpose. As I stated earlier, it allows for you to have more overall health, to push forward and prevent yourself from doing those glory kills you seem to despise so much. The ice bomb, which you happened to use in the video maybe once or twice against some fodder, completely freezes any type of enemy for a considerable amount of time (in contrast to the fast combat), gives you room to breathe, and gives health when you damage frozen enemies. But wait, I hear you complaining about how you have to stop what you're doing to get health by doing glory kills, yet the game gives you a considerably important tool that allows for you to keep the flow of combat steady. I knew from the start of the video that you were going to complain about the ammo counts. Did you happen to think at all about, "Well, if the game wants me to switch weapons often, then maybe low ammo for my more powerful weapons is to enforce that philosophy!" Maybe, if you switched weapons frequently for the different scenarios, you wouldn't be constantly running out of ammo and looking for things to chainsaw. You constantly refer to the game as "unfinished" because a single feature was *postponed* to make way for the development of The Ancient Gods 1 and 2. There are so many more topics that I'd love dearly to call you out on, such as the level design bullshit you were spewing, the general decline of quality as the video progressed, but my fingers are numb from roasting your ass over an open fire. "If this is where the DOOM Series is headed, then I want no part of it." Good. This community would be better off without this overall pointless review. Nobody needed this, and you shouldn't have put yourself through a game that you stated yourself, you didn't have enough brain power to play. DW, 1994's calling - they want you to stop living in that year and accept evolution in games.
@DWTerminator
@DWTerminator 3 жыл бұрын
Hoo boy... you complain about "nonsense" yet are just making things up as you go along. I never said the codex entries are required to play the game. I said they're required to know what's actually going on in the story most of the time because the story you actually get in the game proper and the cutscenes is insufficient. Also your bit about my discussion of the lore being "wrong" is amusing considering I was literally just saying things that were shown or written in the game, and even at one point was just outright quoting from the game itself. "Why did you sit through "terrible writing" to make a part of a review you didn't want to do? " - It's almost like you don't know what a review is. "you refused to use or had practically no knowledge of mechanics that made the game easier" - Or I just forgot about them at times because, I was trying to play this first-person shooter like, I dunno, a first-person shooter instead of a 12-hour-long borderline QTE. Congrats on inadvertently confirming my point that the game has to be played in *one specific way* or the whole thing just doesn't work, though. "The gun sounds are tuned to not overshadow the music and the suit sounds. I doubt that even crossed your mind." - I literally said that's how the sounds are mixed in the video. I said that the monster sounds aren't really distinguishable enough to tell monsters apart from them and that the sound mixing emphasizes the soundtrack and the suit sounds, and that all of the sound design brought together produces a cacophony of noise where it's difficult to tell one thing apart from another. I know *why* the suit sounds are loud. That doesn't change anything about how the sound mixing is done, nor how unimpressive the gun and explosion sounds are in a game that's ostensibly supposed to have "badass weapons." Your comment about the OG Doom music ignores that the music in OG Doom wasn't so loud and overbearing that you couldn't hear the sound effects over it. But I doubt that even crossed your mind. As I've addressed before, I always forgot the ice grenade exists and barely remembered the flame belch and frag grenade exist. Even when I did remember the ice grenade's a thing, I forgot what key I'd bound it to and it doesn't make the core issues with the combat magically go away. The flame belch *is* only marginally useful. As I said in the video, it's nice to have the extra few shards of armor, but given a situation where you can either get health back with a glory kill or get armor back with a flame belch and shooting stuff, you're going to pick the health every time. "Maybe, if you switched weapons frequently for the different scenarios, you wouldn't be constantly running out of ammo and looking for things to chainsaw." - Even with frequent weapon switching you still run out of ammo extremely quickly. As for the bit about "keeping combat steady," there's literally nothing "steady" about interrupting shooting things to do a melee finisher on/chainsaw a demon. I mean hell, they have an upgrade in the game that makes the glory kills faster. If that doesn't tell you the devs knew they were interrupting the game's flow with those, I don't know what will. "a single feature was postponed to make way for the development of The Ancient Gods 1 and 2." - A single feature that was shown prominently in the game's marketing and which is still explicitly mentioned in the game's options menus while still not being in it. So yes, the game's not finished. Funny how when Cyberpunk 2077 comes out unfinished people dogpile on it to criticize the hell out of it, but when Doom Eternal doesn't have an entire, prominently featured game mode in it even almost a year after launch, that's "no big deal." "This community would be better off without this overall pointless review." - What "community" exactly? The "community" that actively tries to ridicule and harass anyone that doesn't blindly agree with their absurd assessment that Doom Eternal is some sort of "peerless masterpiece" or whatever? The "community" that seems to think you can only "understand" the game when you've locked down the "optimized" way of playing it and thus basically breeze through it, while anyone who's not at that point has no business saying anything about it? Frankly with that being what the community's like, why anyone would *want* to be involved with it is utterly beyond me. "DW, 1994's calling - they want you to stop living in that year and accept evolution in games." - I have watched games go from dots and lines that don't remotely resemble what they're supposed to depict to hyper-realistic 3D graphics. I've been along for the ride as arcades gave way to home consoles. I have used controllers from a single joystick with a single button on it on up through modern gamepads with analog sticks and haptic feedback. I've watched motion controls come, go, then come back again. I have watched VR actually become something functional and by all measures seem to actually have a bright future ahead of it instead of just being a pipe dream. I've been there as new franchises rise to prominence and entire genres have been formed out of seemingly nothing. I've been present for *all* of that and more, and much of it I've welcomed with open arms, yet you seem to think I'm stuck in 1994 and won't "accept evolution." This isn't about "evolution." This is about the devs of Doom Eternal making specific design choices that may have been intended to make things interesting, but in reality just drag the entire game down instead.

@@DWTerminator This can be traced back to: Misunderstanding the fundamentals of the game. You can dismiss this claim, sure, but I find it unwise to argue against people who certainly know more about Eternal, than you do yourself. I can come to terms with differing opinions, as long as that person critiques the product fairly. You don't. Hugo Martin's "Fun Zone" directly translates to understanding the core mechanics of the game, and knowing when and how to use them. You're not forced to play a specific way; you're not forced to target weakpoints, or use your tools, or use weapon combos. Those are just ideal ways of playing the game, and every game has an ideal way to play it. Those mechanics are simply there to make it easier for the player. You may argue that higher difficulties restrict your choices, but this instead pushes the skill ceiling. Sure there isn't as much room for mistakes, but weapon combos, utility and the faltering system allows players to formulate their own way of using the game's tools, bend the mechanics and shape their own playstyle. Eternal has a steep learning curve, and no you don't need to master the loop to have fun, you simply need to have an understanding of game's combat. You can suck, and still enjoy it. You can play with two guns, and still enjoy it. I know this, because I've seen players play it supposedly "wrong" and still have a good time. The difference between them, and you, is that they want to get better. Now that isn't a bash at you, of course you wouldn't want to improve at something you're not enjoying, but instead of making baseless claims on game design you obviously don't understand, just accept modern Doom isn't for you. You're entitled to your opinion, just as I am mine. Sorry you didn't enjoy it.

Well I might not agree with all what you said (except the music) I respect your opinion ... But I'll like to ask you done things: so a couple of months back John Romero was asked about the story and gameplay and said in regards of the gameplay, that he was glad that Id didn't do "Doom again" and do something that was different but somewhat familiar but that it can still improve , and in regards to the story he retracted his frase about not being important in Doom and embraced that they improved that (at least a fair amount with plot holes) ... So that was a surprise for me, but My question : Does that matters when almost everyone wants just classic Doom-like gameplay and "plot"? Q2): does transparency helps with this Game/company? Hugo martin (creative Director) never seen to want to do Doom (2016) II , but also wanted to do something that they wouldn't never do again , something along the lines of :what worked here, will be improved and, what doesn't, will be modified or eliminated but Only if people wanted it to be eliminated or repurposed (although that's comun with the industry and sequels) ... He realizaded that not everybody would play the way it was meant to be played , Even if Hugo have said that quite a few things can be eliminated or replaced, but that doesn't mean it's just that way, you can do other alternatives by experimenting with weapon combos as one example... Even with the limited ammo (also the auto-shotgun might help with that) works just fine... And Q3 What do You mean by "Doom fans" ? Sure most of them like the new iterations but not all of them are saying: that there's only one way or that get gud ... Those are more likely elitist and that has also been a situation that has been dealt with un the comunity... Because not everybody can handle that level of stress or "memory binding". That comunity is not like that. P.D. so about the music yeah it was messy and at least the DLC music at least 60% of it it's now actual metal wich I prefer more too. And I may recommend what Allstin or Under the mayo might explain somethings about all that You talked about, Even if You don't agree with everything they Say... In response to your questions... 1: I don't really care what Romero has to say about FPSs anymore. After all, he hasn't been relevant in the genre since Daikatana. 2: I don't think transparency helped or harmed Doom Eternal at all. 3: There's liking a game, and there's being obnoxious, elitist, exclusionary, and outright vitriolic about it. When I'm talking about "NuDoom fans" the latter is what I'm referring to. I see so much of that these days that more often than not I don't even use the word "fan" to describe someone who just enjoys something anymore. I'm not going to watch any videos or look up any guides on the game. I played through it, did this review, and the game itself made me want nothing at all to do with it anymore. There is literally nothing anyone can say or do that will ever persuade me to take another look at Doom Eternal ever again. "the invasion thing has been talk about in streams with ID it Will be out after dlc2" - Not that it even matters anymore.

You can't really complain about the story if you don't read the codex entries. Yes, I know, it's a heresy, and all that, but really is it any different from the way you understand the story in say, Dark Forces, for example? To me, that's what it feels like. Anyway, whatever your thoughts are on reading for story in general, throw out your pre-conceived notions, because Doom Eternal's story is simply fantastic. No, it is not short, in fact, there's probably enough lore to fill 2-3 chapters of a novel, but I feel it is highly worth a read, at least once. If you were expecting just meaningless trivia about why a shotgun exists in the UAC, well sure, those entries still exist, and feel free to ignore them, but Eternal also goes so far beyond that, particularly in the "History of the Knight Sentinels" and "History of the Maykrs." (and a Warning for those in comments, SPOILERS below.) The actual story itself does a really great job of taking narrative elements from 2016, e.g. the story behind Argent D'Nur, its Wraiths, the well, and the "Betrayer," and really wrapping them into a greater tale that feels completely consistent with the heart of the original Dooms. There's quite an interesting story about the Knight Sentinels and their civil war, or the Icon of Sin being born from the former heart of the Betrayer's son. In Doom II he was simply this colossal Demon, whose head alone took up an entire wall, and whose tentacles, in defeat, could devastate the surface of hell as they thrashed in anguish. This character is expanded upon and tied into 2016 by re-envisioning him as the ultimate example of the "Deal with the Devil" trope which has been popular in fiction since forever. In trying to save his deceased son from the torment of hell, a Knight Sentinel made a deal with the forces of Hell that would seal the fate of his people, trapping the Slayer and his fellow Knights in Hell. His wish was fulfilled, and his son was returned from the hell dimension, but reborn as the Icon of Sin, with his heart the only human (err Sentinel) component remaining. In fact, when you see the Makyrs attempt to control the Icon, and the Slayer instead destroys the heart they try to manipulate, that is the Betrayer's son's heart which is destroyed. The quality of the prose itself is also very high as well. It's written from the perspective of the Knight Sentinels, so it has that old-timey, medieval sort of speech to it that gives it a nice flavor and makes it more interesting to read. However, what really sets this story out as something truly special is that it goes above and beyond simply contextualizing the levels of the game. The histories of the Sentinels and the Makyrs are in fact metaphors, and there’s a fair bit of anti-religious subtext, present in both the writing and the imagery, that’s entirely in line with the tone of Doom and heavy metal to begin with. However, I am an atheist, so obviously I am biased, and there’s a reason why they chose a fictionalized version of God (i.e. the Khan Makyr) rather than actual God, which could be controversial. The metaphor itself is also subject to a good deal of interpretation, so there are a number of thought-provoking possibilities one could interpret the story as. In short, the Khan Makyr is the leader of the Makyrs; an alien race who, in both form and function, fit the characteristics of God, and are seen as such by most races in the cosmos, though they are especially worshipped by the Sentinels. In return for their piety, the Sentinels share in the vast power of The Makyrs, a holy power which both gives life to their heavenly realm of Urdak, and grants the Sentinels exceptional strength, speed and vigor. This power is the same Argent Energy which was introduced in the last game. Grateful for the gift, the Knight Sentinels use it in their crusades against the denizens of the dark realm, that is, until they alone discover the source of their incredible strength: the Nekkravol. You see, given enough time, the bodies of the deceased eventually morph into demons, and the remnants of their black souls become the raw energy found in Hell’s bleak landscape. But like the production of raw oil in real life, this process takes eons to occur. Therefore, the Makyrs commanded the peasants of Sentinel Prime to construct the Nekravol, a horror show capable of extracting souls and converting them to refined Argent energy through the perpetual torment and damnation of the innocent. In short, the “Gods” had betrayed their people. “The demons were the victims, and the victims were us,” as the Sentinels wrote. (The theme is reminiscent of that in dystopian 70s sci-fi film “Soylent Green”.) The suffering of the Sentinels’ own fallen comrades-and in the present, that of humanity-is what gives the Gods their life and powers their crusade against the darkness. The light itself is but a hollow illusion, a pale reflection of the darkness it merely pretends to despise. The two are inextricably bound and you cannot have one without the other. When you finally fight the Khan Makyr herself and eventually destroy her, Eternal does an excellent job of communicating this idea visually. Once her gilded armor that creates the godly illusion is stripped away, the foul creature underneath looks no different from the Demons themselves. It’s sort of a reversal of Return of the Jedi, where underneath the Dark Lord’s armor lies but a man hoping to be free and shed his bitter hatred. It’s also akin to Animal Farm, where the pigs turn out to be no different than the humans. I found this to concept to be quite a profound notion, and a number of possible analogies could be drawn from it, depending on your interpretation. The most obvious inference would be that the God of real-world religions is not as saintly as he is said to be, for his empty words of peace and kindness do not apply to non-believers. He is just as responsible for the damnation of the innocent (but unbelieving) as the Devil. Or, less theologically, his apathy towards humanity’s plight, our real world Hells on Earth (WW2, slavery, genocide, the COVID pandemic, etc.) makes him no less culpable or evil than the wrongdoers he castigates. Another, less religious interpretation could be that the luxuries of the first world, like those of Urdak, are built upon the suffering of the unfortunate souls in the third world. We enjoy the benefits of low production costs (passed on to consumers) that are only possible because the less fortunate elsewhere in the world are damned to a lifetime of near-slavery in horrible conditions. These are the kinds of thought-provoking themes and metaphors that make classic science fiction such a delight to sink my mind into, and a good part of the reason why I treasure the original Star Trek series and classic Doctor Who. No, you wouldn’t expect a good Doom game to have such an intricately detailed and powerful story, nor would you expect a Doom game with rather linear level design and an arsenal nearly identical to its predecessor to be a revolutionarily innovative shooter. Yet Doom Eternal has achieved both, and these “differences” have somehow only made it a more Doomy Doom game. The original Doom, after all, was born from the sci-fi/action/horror genre, and original id devs have gone on record stating they came up with the idea after watching Aliens and the Evil Dead at the time. Yet, as cool as the story behind the action is, the alluring simplicity of the gameplay is what always calls you back for more, and the words on a codex are no more integral to that experience than the words in the Ultimate Doom’s instruction manual. But they are there to appreciate for those willing to read them, and appreciate them I did.

"game is laughably easy" and "a matter of rote memorization" yet he complains about how much damage everything is doing and how he has no health, and getting overwhelmed by the demons. He goes on about the character of Doom Slayer himself and the story being over the top to the point of it being nonsensical but that was point. Even the original Doom games were never grounded in any realism and were over the top as well. Hell even great FPS games like Blood, F.E.A.R., Shadow Warrior, Duke Nukem, Timesplitters, Return to Castle Wolfenstein etc... were over the top and weren't suppose to take serious. Not sure why Doom 2016 & Eternal are exceptions. You talk about the the sound design in particular in what I can assume are the battle themes when in combat and whatnot being repetitive but I personally never found that to be the case. Each feel distinctive from one another. Not sure how "Metal Hell" and "The DOOM Hunter" get repetitive. You then talk about the low ammo count being worse then it was in Doom 2016. This has been explain both by the dev team and players from the community that like Doom Eternal. This was done purposefully to force players to use different weapons given your going up at any part of the game, a variety of demons with very specific weak point and while any weapon can kill them, your suppose to use certain weapons against enemies that exploit their weakness, something you already mentioned when talking about the Revenant and taking out it's shoulder cannons to force it into relying on melee combat. In Doom 2016, you can breeze through the entire game with a upgraded Super Shotgun and Gauss Cannon easily on harder difficulties without ever replaying on the other weapons in your inventory though enemies in Doom 2016 did not have weakness for your to exploit so using the other weapons was really optional. In Doom Eternal, that's not the case as you need to rely on constantly swapping the weapons you've obtained as each have a role to play in exploiting the enemy weaknesses. You say the fodder enemies are nuisances but how exactly? They don't move particularly fast and are relegated to one attack pattern which easy to read if playing close attention and memorizing. Having more ammo doesn't fix the challenge of the higher difficulties. Prioritize enemies, constantly keep move, rely on function of each ability (Flame Belch for armor, Glory Kill for health, etc) and your good. The game is only hard if your not paying careful attention to your surroundings and/or not taking advantage of enemy weaknesses with weapon attachments. Yes, your have to "git gud" because the game forces you to change up your play style from what your normally accustomed to in other FPS games. Cannon Fodder constantly spawn in so you have a infinite pool of ammo but only when you understand and adapt to that mechanic. Never once on Ultranightmare did I find myself worried about ammo. As I am watching your gameplay throughout the review, you are utilizing the weapons, attachments and abilities in all the wrong ways. Take 41:02 - 41:30 as an example. Rather than just pulling out the Ballista, should have used Flame Belch since you were low on armor. Hell Knight was charging right at you, should have used the Gatling Gun since it's used on fast moving target to slow them down. Hearing and seeing this review was honestly more about not understanding and using the mechanics to it's fullest and not wanting to change your play style.

I don't like people going too defensive about what they like when others are not on the same opinion, i think that sometimes it's not just about "getting good" the reason to appreciate a game but there's something deeper if something doesn't click with you. I completed Doom 2016 at max difficulty and one of the things i liked most are the bits of realistic design of the levels (the feeling they are not just setpieces but believable places) and what i was bored of was the overuse of the "close an arena, kill every wave of enemies, open and move to the next one" idea. I watched many Doom Eternal footage to convince myself to buy it but i see less of the first and a lot more of the second so i postponed the purchase, probably when everything will be released for the game i'll dive into it. Funny that even the game designer in a pre-release presentation said "yeah this arena style fights are not as fun as other level design types" and then the final game has basically that on steroids. But still it's not like i don't like that kind of gameplay. I like Resident Evil 4 style games and they are basically that, with every "room" being an arena that needs some cleaning of various ammounts of enemies before going forwards. The game using modern IdTech i appreciated most for its gameplay it's Wolfenstein: The Old Blood and if you look at it it's even more focused on arena fights more than a "open oriented" navigation. I liked it so much that i 100% complete everything. So why? I think it's all about the balance about mechanics, level design, options, presentation and pacing. Some people don't care much about repetition, story or believability of the game world but appreciate more the trial and error element of the gameplay, the level difficulty even if the details of it have some issues. For me a series of arenas that resemble more Quake 3 levels where platforms are there mainly for gameplay purposes than architectural needs, with respawning fodder enemies to recharge ammo that hardly go down with a punch, with an art style that goes more towards the cartoonish and high fantasy (reminds me of Diablo 3 direction compared to the previous titles) isn't going to appeal much to me. The games i mentioned put some level of effort in breaking down things with new elements that go beyond more enemies or "raw" difficulty. In Old Blood maximizing your initial stealth kiils and then carefully place yourself in the best corners of the arena between waves was quite enjoyable and the game was not long to become boring with overusing the same concept over and over, maybe with just more monsters or different enviroment. Last thing, you can complete a difficult game and still having issues, it's not about being able to do it or not understanding the logic behind it. I completed all of the Souls games solo but i cannot like some issues with the camera with the boss fights and the wasted time when you need to return to the boss arena when you die. I much prefer a game like the top down Ys ones, you see much better the situation and you can instantly retry a fight and in my opinion the challenge can go even further than "scaring" a player by making him losing resources and time with retries. Having the best enviroment for enjoying the learning process is an underrated element of the game design. I love the finite ammount of enemies in classic Doom games and (re)spawning really kills that concept: i appreciate max difficulty in Heretic because it doesn't do it compared to Doom, i didn't like it when done in Hexen, i was "uncertain" about what you have in Doom 2016. I still play Heretic because it respects you more and i completed all levels at wand start for that but with other games it's likely i will not play them again repeatedly.

Once I began understanding the mechanics, you realise there are no strict restrictions in Eternal, just things that will make it more efficient or less. If you concentrate, you can get through almost any arena using just movement, remember your dash has two charges and can be used in the air. Combine this with meathook from the super shotgun and you have a cocktail of movement options, you just don't realise it at that start. About the glitches you mentioned, that's strange, I don't know why that happened. Maybe an update broke something? There have been a lot of those lately since the new master levels came out.

@@JohnSmith-ep2hmIt’s ok, I have really mixed feelings on both 4/2016 and eternal there are a lot of things I don’t really like about both of them, the first time I played 4 on ultra violence when it came out I thought it was really underwhelming and too easy, then I tortured myself by playing it on nightmare without using any of the suit and weapon upgrades, the third time I played it was a year ago, played it on nightmare with upgrades basically cheesing the game because if you don’t know which is kind of a double edge sword, where after the third level doom 4 gets easier and easier I was starting to have a little bit of fun. I don’t know where I stand on eternal, most things in it are better than 4 but I didn’t think 4 was all that good, but I don’t know, there are some design choices that are just a bit odd, and the movement and the game is glitchy and weird, you can get stuck and hung up on the environment all of the time, and even flying through the air sometimes it feels like there’s an unseen force slowing you down. One thing I find laughable is people say doom eternal is about resource management, what resource management? It’s more like resource farming. So resource management is most prevalent in the old resident evil style games, where ammo and health items are REALLY scarce, where you only use a health item if you really need it, and only kill an enemy if you absolutely have to. Or even the original doom, there is only so many health kits in the levels, so you have to be careful about not taking hits, e4m1 is one of the hardest levels ever made for the original games, why? Because there’s only 9 health bonuses in a level where there’s quite a lot of enemies in two medium to fairly small sized areas. Or even something like in the second level of episode 2 where at the first half of the level ammo is quite scarce, but there’s a berserk pack, and you can switch the the fist and use that for a quite a while to save up on ammo. Doom eternal has none of that, health? You can get that from glory killing enemies, and they drop health when you’re low on health, and with ammo there’s almost always fodder enemies around in nearly every encounter, and the chainsaw refills to one bar automatically, so you’ll never ever actually be out of ammo for any considerable amount of time. It’s the act of constantly having to stop what your doing with the larger enemies to go and chainsaw a fodder enemy to refill your pathetically small ammo capacity is the tiresome part.

I basically agree with your description of the systems, but not with your interpretation. I actually ENJOYED everything you found exhausting. To me it was like a well choreographed, complex dance that depended on what the game threw at me. Also, the memorization isn't really that hard because you only need to perform a "move" a few times until it basically becomes muscle memory. Think of it like a combat sport - in most combat sports you have rules, there are weak spots, there are defenses and attacks. Doom: Eternal is basically like that, but in order to master its combat sport, you need to first learn the moves. Once you do, you're basically a skilled combatant and you deal with the challenges the combatants throw at you. It's basically a first person shooter kung-fu or aikido. Now, you lament for the "play it by reflexes" pre-Eternal game play. But while that provides its own satisfaction, it's like fighting someone by ear, randomly, hitting them without much forethought but at the closest and most convenient points. Basically, a very fast, but indiscriminate and unskilled fighter. In that scenario it is only possible to win if the enemies are stupid, it's basically brute force versus their health pool. No tactic or skill or thinking required. And Doom: Eternal is basically the opposite of that. It's FPS dojo. Yes it can be exhausting. But it is rewarding once you master it and start entering that flow state. And yes, the enemies are supposed to feel trivial once you "know thy enemy." You ARE the Doom Slayer after all, that's the entire purpose, that you get to cheese through these behemoths. But the danger is always there - miss a move and you're at risk, miss two, and your health is cut in half. Miss three and you're almost dead if you can't think on your feet and act fast. Cat reflexes. That is the charm of this game and that's why I fucking love it. I like Doom 2016 too, don't be me wrong. And initially I struggled to get into Eternal. But once I did... I wouldn't change it for anything. It is in a way it's own shooter genre now. It's not a classic nor an ordinary FPS. It's a heavily skill-based, tactical FPS, that still needs you to have fast reflexes or else you're toast. They basically took the reflexes of Doom and bolted a brain on it. And it became shooting martial arts. That's my interpretation.

Here's the thing, I get where you're coming from, because I had a bit of trouble picking up Eternal when I first started too. I started off trying to play it like 2016, and I was getting overwhelmed by the learning curve too. But its a game that required a lot of time and practice to master. Playing through on Ultra-Violence might not have been the best call either, as it is definitely a game that needs a "training wheels" phase to learn. Its difficult to remember the grenades, flame belch, chainsaw and blood punch whilst also juggling between killing the different demons, managing your weapons and ammo, and then weaving it altogether seamlessly so the game just flows. Describing the gameplay loop as "doing what the developers want to or you're punished" is not quite accurate. Like learning to ride a bike, the simplest, easiest way to learn to ride one is to try and do so in the most straightforward way possible, because you need to learn the basics. When you become more skilled through practice, you might learn to stand up, shift your weight around, and get a feeling of how the bike behaves under your feet. But then when you really advance in skill level, you can treat the bike in a variety of ways, even unconventional, freestyle approaches, because you're so attuned to the way it behaves you have full control and understanding of the limitations of the equipment and the autonomy of your control over it. You can't get on a bike and jump straight into a vert ramp the first week you try riding one the first time, you'll cave your head in. The guys that are great at Eternal like Mayo, Hmmp, Toyota and Sylar do all sorts of crazy things with the game that go well above and beyond the basics the tutorials lay out. I'd highly recommend going back and giving it another go. UndertheMayo does some fantastic tutorials outlining some of the more intricate mechanics the game has to offer. Playing on Hurt Me Plenty shouldn't be a hit to the ego, because its a far cry from a classic Doom game. Civvie had to pull it back in his first playthrough as well.

This I think this is almost the worst take on doom eternal. Almost because there's this one review where a guy accuses fans that they were being paid off for saying positive things about the game but this review is kind of close to it. Because this guy contradicts himself multiple times through out the video and has not good points and is also being misleading about features in the game and is some what lying it seems like. And has this tone in his voice throughout parts of the video when talking about parts of the game and the way he says these things is like if all of these things in the game is a negative. I'm honestly glad Hugo Martin and the rest of id software aren't listening to people like this because these kinds of people just don't seem to want games to try new things. They want games to go backwards it seems like

@@fuckso2342 I know. I don't know how this dude does not ever notice when he's contradicting himself. Not only but also lazy at editing as well since he's doesn't show footage of what he's talking about most of the time expect for the purple goo part and boss fights. And yeah your right there is multiple different ways to play the game. You can use rocket and blister to stager a cacodemon for a glory kill. You can use rockets to falter the pinky demons. Where this guy only uses the combat shotgun and chain gun for the most of the video and only uses like the plasma gun only whenever there's a demon with shields because clearly he just followed the tutorials and thought that's how your supposed to deal with those enemies

DOOM 3 was NOT a survival horror game, nor was it TRYING to be a survival horror game, it's crazy to me how little understanding you have about DOOM considering you've been playing it since '94 as you say. I stopped watching the video when you said this. There are 0 survival elements in DOOM 3, it's a horror-action game, just like DOOM 1993 was. DOOM 3 is a remake of that game, the whole game is even segmented into "3 episodes" like the original was, first part of the game being strictly on MARS, then Hell levels (even the double hell knight encounter was remade before entering the portal to hell) and then the mix between the 2. DOOM 3 was Carmack's masterpiece. That being said, while I do agree DOOM eternal will never be as legendary as the original 2 games, it's still a great game and probably one of the best FPS games we got in the last 10 years, it's just fun to play and ID did a great job here.
@DWTerminator

Doom 3 still regularly gets lumped into the "survival horror" genre even if it's *really* awful as a survival horror game... mainly because at the time it released, that's what everyone called horror games in general (hell, it's still an overused moniker even today). Doom 1 is just an FPS. It was never intended as a horror game in the first place. Meanwhile Doom 3 *literally says on the box that it's a horror game* and it was intended as one from the beginning. I suppose "not being able to read the back of a game box" is another thing I should add to my list of reasons why I shouldn't bother responding to Doom Eternal fans' complaints.

I saw one of your replies to another comment arguing that the game was poorly received because only a minority of the people who played the game have beaten it according to Steam global achievements. While this is true, I seriously wonder if you've taken the time to compare that percentage to other games. After I saw that comment, I looked at the Global Achievements for Fallout: New Vegas (less than 40%), a completely unrelated game and found similar percentages for the rate of completion for late game quests. But that game has branching paths, so I looked up some other games. Bioshock Infinite and Wolfenstein TNO are also below 50 (48 and 46%). This is just a quick glance, mind you. In the past you've made arguments with the same lack of research, using metacritic scores on the re-release of games on other platforms and pointing to the fact that a rerelease got a lower score as proof the game wasn't that good, despite the fact this is typical for re-releases. Genuinely curious as to why you do this. You have to know you're being dishonest. A simple look at and comparison to other games is enough to make a lot of your points (not only about this game, but other games as well) look so silly. Do you not care at all? Do you think anyone can't just look at the global achievements of other games and realize that the argument you're making is so stupid?
@internetuser3104
@internetuser3104 3 жыл бұрын
Even if you want to backtrack on this argument and say "Nah fam I meant it was only a smaller minority, not an absolute minority" yeah.... About that: The game isn't a year old. Comparing it to a game that came out in 2019 and 2020.... they have similar rates of completion (in the 30s and 40s). The rate of completion will go up over time, as it typically does.

You sound a bit like me after doing first run on UV. Since then I did a couple more runs on Nightmare and definitely warmed up to the game a lot more, but I was really annoyed while still learning the combat on first run. Once you get into the groove of it combat is indeed enjoyable. And I am doing Slayer Gates not to unlock that weapon, which I find a waste of BFG ammo and don't even bother picking up, but for actual fun of it. This is a fun shooter, but it definitely isn't a Doom game. It's even less of a Doom game than Doom 2016 was, but overall I gotta say I had a lot more fun with Eternal. Though I did like boss fights better in 2016 because I just hate boss fights with minions around. Just give me a memorable 1v1 boss fight, not another arena fight you idiots.

F.E.A.R. even at it's worst/ most repetitive ( not counting the one expansion we do not speak about) never threw you at a horde of popcorn enemies or had enemies whose patterns were exclusively 1-note. Doom Eternal is not a bad game, but it IS a horrible Doom game. Go back to the original Doom 1 & 2 ( preferably The Ultimate Doom for 1 and skip TNT Eviloution & The Plutonia Experiment for 2) you'll notice that they do not throw hordes of Chaff/Garbage/ popcorn enemies at you as a means of "increasing the difficulty". Those enemies are in the game but, it's a combination of the enemies, available supplies on hand, and the environment that provides the difficulty. There's no real "memorization" needed. No overly elaborate big demon patterns, you're winging it/flying by the seat of your pants most of the time. Barring the very few times, you're locked down to an "arena" in those games? you're 100% free to fall back to another part of the map for either cover, an alternate route, supplies, or even just an advantageous position. You are also for the most part free to just blaze ahead legging it forward in hope of finding these things in front of you. ( Assuming one had not played the level already enough to know what's around the corner) Doom 1 & 2 barring a few rare missteps show the importance of level design and enemy placement and what they contribute to making the whole of a game better than it's constituent parts. I am not saying this out of being pretentious or some unjust sacrosanct "holier than thou" attitude, but rather from the fact that a LOT of good FPS titles have used some of the design cues of Doom 1 & 2's levels and enemy placement in their FPS titles. Even Dusk has taken some of the cues of Doom 1&2 level design and pacing and used such to phenomenal effect.
