Hours and hours ... I too listened to the audiobook and I could not put it down!!

For as long as the book is, there is very little filler. Everything is important and if you re-read the book, you get a clearer view why certain things are mentioned in certain chapters .

@@DarkcIoud1111 there is sooo much filler. Most of Italy and Paris is just filler. Italy was very fun and exciting and I really loved it but Paris drags on WAY TOO LONG.

There are others that are better on the “ long winded” aspect

@@richardbenitez1282 none that I’ve read. There are other such a war and peace and in search of lost time which were massive and I genuinely liked. However I prefer the count of Monte Cristo to all of them.

Edward was on his way to being another Benedetto. De Villefort could have prevented every bit of those poisonings and Dantes took too much responsibility for the poisoning that was going to happen anyway. Dantes didn’t talk her into poisoning. He only provided more education.

Edmond was not the same person, he became spiteful, different from the person whom Mercedes loved. Hyadeee is more akin to Edmond, can better understand him and love him as he is by sharing a similar fate.

It’s well worth the effort in my opinion I hope you decide to give it a go 😀

I’m not sure about all editions but abridged means that parts of the book have been removed to make it shorter. I generally prefer the original editions. I listened on audiobook the original and just picked one I liked the narrator for.

le sigh I managed to read it in two months no problem with school and work, so you should be fine reading it over the summer

le sigh I have the 500 pages version by another publisher, Bantam classics I believe. I devoured it in a week through sem-break. I just couldn't put the book down with so much interest.

Which movie? There are many films, I love the Soviet version If it is the 2002 film, it is. The story of the book could be defined as follows: "God and the devil are fighting there and the battlefield is the heart of man.” - Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov. Edmond after years in prison, he returned as an extremely dark and cruel man, he is a man who delights in the suffering of his enemies and even hurts innocents for that. But still, he still has a little bit of goodness inside the heart of the count. Let's not forget that the count has a beautiful bride from the east with whom he falls in love. There is part of the Western audience that was disgusted by the end of the book. I'm going to copy a part of their criticism from the end. "I first read the book about 9 years ago, and I really enjoyed it and was perfectly happy with the ending. A few years ago, I saw the movie version of The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) with Jim Caviezel, and I thought it was pretty decent. A lot of things had to be condensed for the movie, with some characters left out or combined. But the most interesting thing about it is that Dantes ends up with Mercedes in the end. Haydee is left out entirely and Albert turns out to be the son of Dantes, conceived before he was imprisoned. And I kind of liked that ending. So that is where I was at, and I just reread the book a couple months ago, and I think the movie has changed how I feel about the ending. Reading the book again, I couldn't help but feel sorry for Mercedes, as she was not at fault for anything. I even started rooting for her, when she is trying to drop hints to the Count, and the Count realizes she only ever loved him. And it is evident that there is still love between them (consider when she melts Dantes' heart enough to force him not to kill Albert). And at the end, it just felt even more wrong that Mercedes ends up broken, weeping, and completely alone. I realize that the book ending is the only true absolute revenge. And that the movie ending makes the story more about the happy ending for hopeless romantics, and a little less about revenge. So my main question is: which ending would you prefer? One where Mercedes is left broken, weeping, and alone and Dantes is off romping around the world with a princess half his age? Or where Haydee is freed and grows up on her own, and Dantes spends happily ever after with Mercedes? Additionally: Did anyone else have a change of heart similar to mine after watching the movie? I'm reading Monte Cristo now. Try With Fire and Sword. That is my favorite. Have always been looking for a classic so captivating since. Hopefully this one does the trick!

I would say that there is no reason you shouldn’t try it and see. It really does depend on the individual for example I don’t think I would have been able to understand all the elements at 13 but would still have enjoyed the surface level story. Why don’t you borrow it from the library and give it a go and if it becomes a struggle maybe leave a few years 😊
