The Count of Monte Cristo is an excellent blueprint for dealing with haters.

The Count of Monte Cristo is underrated! 😊 It's like a 1200 pages long but it moves so fast. I love the unabridged Robin Buss translation as well. Interestingly, there's both a mini series and a film coming out this year. If you love The Count of Monte Cristo and you also love science fiction, see Alfred Bester's The Stars My Destination which is a fun sci-fi inspired by The Count of Monte Cristo.

I love Dumas and Verne and have little patience for Dickens or Trollope. I guess I have the opposite opinion of many.

Even more than Dracula, my love for the Count is immense. I had that very same book. The length never bothered me

I’m reading this one right now (unabridged and I’m 400 pages in) - it’s amazing!

Magnificent book. I’ve had a lot of difficulty appreciating French literature in translation, but this one worked beautifully for me. It has everything: love, hate, revenge, adventure, pathos, humor-just a fantastic book. What a ride! I’d say that the...newer literati now look down their snobby noses at Dickens and Trollope. Who cares what they think? Just let me read the books and make up my own mind.

For some reason Steve, you and your dog are looking increasingly SIMILAR ha! Haven’t read Count of Monte Cristo yet except only partially in my high school French class. But then again, it was just a few dozen pages from the start of the novel. I just recently bought the novel (though unfortunately not your favourite penguin edition haha!) and hoping to read it in full this time around

I learned about the whole Dumas Factory thing when I organized a read along of this book a couple years ago. It strikes me as not that different than what a lot of literary wives ended up doing back in the day, like Tolstoy's wife who copied out many versions of War and Peace, and probably contributed in some other ways too. Obviously this is a bit more than that, and more organized, and these writers were actually paid. But yeah, it doesnt bother me. This book was great fun! I have an Oxford World's Classics though.

I actually bought that edition based on your review of the book a few years ago lol! I am about half way through it before I had to pause to focus on school work but now that that’s over with maybe it will be my next big book to work on 🤔I remember loving the first half.

I accidently read an abridged Barnes and Nobles classic edition thinking I had read the unabridged version. Silly me. The abridged version reduced his prison experience to almost nothing so his misery and desire for revenge were minimalized. I still enjoyed this fascinating book. Thanks for the insight into the author and your expert opinions are highly regarded. I enjoy the channel.

I’ve never read The Count of Monte Cristo, so I’m one of those people who only knows that it’s a revenge tale. But I totally agree with the prejudice toward Dumas in comparison to Dickens. I talk about the most obscure French lit on the face of the planet, and you talk about the popular ones. Your video makes me want to read Monte Cristo, so I can be cool and hip. Tomorrow, you should do Frankenstein. It fits the zeitgeist bill.

Currently reading this exact book. Coming across your channel I looked up to see if you had done a video on Count of Monte Cristo. So far it is excellent. I'm not reading quickly so will take me some time. Perhaps there is an element of familiarity breeds contempt? with it, who knows. Was that your tummy rumbling at 7.36? Best wishes to you and I hope you are reading something great.

This selective attitude to some authors and not others puzzles me. I try to go with whether I enjoy a book or learn from it. If a book entertains me and informs me too that is great, but one or the other is fine too. I would love a good biography of Dumas.

So, I just checked what the new Ellsworth translation was. Why did they decide to split Twenty Years After? It's pretty much the same length as Three Musketeers
