It's been almost 2 years and I'm still happy with the Essenza Mini. Here is an updated review plus some additional info including how to adjust the volume of your Espresso and Lungo. Also a demo of how to reset the machine to factory specs and adjust the Energy Saver feature.

Here's a quick tip. To turn the Essenza Mini off immediately after using it, simultaneously press the Espresso & Lungo buttons and the machine will shut off completely. The default auto-shutoff time is 9 minutes. That can be changed to 30 minutes if desired and you'd do that by first turning the machine off, then pressing the espresso button for 5 seconds at which point it will blink to indicate the setting, One blink means it's set for 9 minutes, Two blinks means it's set for 30 minutes. If you press the Espresso button, that will change the setting and then pressing the Lungo button for 5 seconds will exit that mode.

thankyou - i must have reset the default pour amount unknowingly and it’s been driving me nuts for weeks ! i felt like everytime i made a cup it poured a different amount. i didn’t even know you could reset that. thanks so much. also like your candid attitude.. i feel like i always need to be perfect in my videos …. thanks for the inspiration. -Mike

Thank you, sir for this video! I just got this very machine sans instructions (this was a thrift store blessing this afternoon: $5.99!) Your info. was concise, complete and well presented! I restored the factory times to each shot. Pods weren’t getting punched but I quickly found an online tip to remedy that.

There is only one size of capsules that fit in the Original Line Nespresso machines so you can't go wrong. Just make sure you don't buy Vertuo capsules because that is an entirely different size that definitely will not fit in Original Line machines such as the Essenza Mini.

Great tutorial sir...I wish my machine worked though. Haven’t used it in probably over a year and it’s not pumping any water. I have repeatedly pressed the luongo button (no capsule in) with a full reservoir of water but it just makes the noise and no water comes out. I’ve been trying all afternoon! I tried brushing the filter grate and paper clipping the spout to no avail. Any advice before I go to Amazon to buy a new one? Thank you.🙁 UPDATE! I discovered that if your machine doesn’t pump any water all you have to do is add a capsule, press the luongo button and when you hear it start, pull up the lever and pump it about 8 times and that forces all the air out of the line and let’s the hot water flow. Problem solved!

Thanks a lot for the follow up! One question though: if you just use an espresso, will it also dispose of the pod? Seems like a waste, no? If you can have a lungo from a pod, doesn't it mean you should be able to get 2 espressos from one pod?

No, it does not mean that. An espresso is, generally speaking, 1 ounce. A lungo is an espresso with added water, usually 1 more ounce of water added to 1 ounce of espresso. But yes, nespresso pods are wasteful no matter how you look at it. A pod only holds about 6 grams of ground coffee That's barely enough to make an espresso. If you tried to make 2 espressos from the same pod you'd end up with a very weak, very thin, very light colored and probably very bitter second shot of espresso. To be somewhat unfair to the craft, a Lungo is really just a watered down shot of espresso.

what is really cool is one of our local coffee shops .. locally roasts are sold in Nespresso pods form the local super market ... ..fresh is best and of course .. we can but the empty pods online and go to our local coffee shop and buy fresh grinds .. and make our own pods .. how cool is that!

If you remove the drip tray you will be able to fit a 5" tall cup under it.

Joe Lee The Gran Latissima was terrible. Inconsistent volume of drinks, the milk frother frequently failed to work properly. It was a very disappointing machine that was replaced three times by Nespresso before I finally got a different machine, the Creatista Plus, which is fantastic. I will be doing a video review of the Creatista Plus very soon.

Actually both things. the water is in contact with the coffee grounds longer but the volume is larger so compared to a single shot of espresso it won't taste as strong since there is more water.

I can’t think of any way that the machine itself could be causing the espresso to be bitter. I just think that you haven’t found the right pod to fit your preferences yet. Also, if you try to make a Lungo out of a pod, that’s designed to be a Ristretto, or an espresso, that could be the cause of the bitterness.

How much water please for a Lungo shot?? If you fill water up, will it stop depending upone whether it's espresso or lungo? Deciding on buying a machine! Which espresso pod do you prefer on taste?

The machine will always dispense the same amount of water regardless of the water tank level. An espresso by default is 40ml (1.35 fl oz), a Lungo is by default 110ml (3.71 fl oz). However you are able to manually set the volume of either drink by holding down the appropriate button and releasing it once the desired amount is in your cup. You are also able to reset the machine to its default settings as I demonstrate in the video. Your choice of pods is really a personal choice. What I like may not be what you like. I happen to like Starbucks pods amzn.to/36gIv7U as well as Peet's amzn.to/3fLbBiW . I also like Nespresso Fortissio Lungo amzn.to/37iGfwj & Kazar amzn.to/3mjn8Zb. I also enjoy Café Bustelo amzn.to/3liWJcR. I tend to like dark roast, full-bodied coffee.

Hope you like it. If you decide you want to make some coffee drinks with froth, you can always buy a handheld frother or even use a French Press to froth milk easily. I've never been to Maui but have been to Big Island and Kauai. Hope to get back to Hawaii one of these days.

The short answer is not really. This machine is an espresso machine. There is no separate hot water dispenser. You could run the machine without inserting a capsule but you'd get some coffee residue and you would be limited to how much hot water you could get since this only makes espresso and lungo which is only about 1oz of hot water for espresso and about 3.75 oz for lungo.

Oh no! Well the only advice I can give is to ensure the pods are inserted correctly. If they aren't angled in just right, they could get squashed. Some third party pods aren't quite right and border on being outright incompatible.

It might be in descaling mode for some reason. Try holding both buttons for 5 to 6 seconds.

I actually just re-read the manual myself and learned this..."To turn the machine off before automatic Auto Off mode, press both the Espresso and Lungo buttons simultaneously."
