1:00 Gut problems? I was talking to my mother about this the other day. If you’re on a vegan diet, you’re not eating any natural yogurt, which means you’re probably seriously lacking in probiotics, indeed. Another important thing to note: people who are vegan often lack in Vitamin B12 (only found in animal produce), and if you spend a lot of time indoors, in England, then taking Vitamin D is also a good idea. If you saw a doctor for your gut problems, he probably told you the same thing.

Since this is your most recent video I hope you do not mind if I comment on something more general. I started watching your videos in October 2023 and moved from current ones to older vlogs. I am a PhD student at the Department of Anglophone Literature and Cultures and your love for literature naturally resonates with me. I was in a slump last year with academic writing turning into a task I dreaded and it didn't really go anywhere, my supervisors weren't satisfied with my texts either. I started to adapt some habits present in your vlogs, particularly shifting the prep work of my research to be more time-consuming yet engaging, installing rituals like candles and an air humidifier and romanticising writing sessions, which I now enjoy much more. I handed in a chapter of my PhD project recently and received overwhelmingly positive feedback. I wanted to express my gratitude to you for the significant part you played in this positive change in my career. Keep up the wonderful work!

Hi, as a pharmacist I suggest to take only probiotics registered as otc or prescription based. Producers of suplements are not legally obligated to provide correct information about ingredients or to test their products for contamination. If product is contaminated they don't have to tell that publicly or pull off products from shelves. I remember a few years ago there was some batch of probiotics contaminated with e.coli. It leaked becasue some people actually got sick.

The one she’s advertising also contains bacteriophage viruses, which in many countries are authorised as feed additives for farm animals, but not for human consumption. Oh how I wish influencers wouldn’t just take any sponsorship that is tossed their way by their management agency - it’s so obvious from Ruby’s reading of the script that she has zero understanding of the product she’s selling. (Not to mention, any company that can give a 40% discount and pay an influencer is operating on a very inflated margin.)

I am feeling really dark and stuck right now and the recent lack of people in my life who understand, who listen or simply of people who don't shallowly look over anything can make me feel very lonely...your passion for what you study and read apparently as great as mine is heartwarming, and it reminded me the pleasure I find in these things I love, especially books, will always be here and come back to me. If you're having gut or bowel issues at your age you need to get it checked out asap, don't take an unprescribed pill for them as even if it did work it would likely be just treating the symptoms not the cause. It may well just be minor digestive issues or an intolerance but my friend thought she had mild IBS in her mid-20s and it turned out to be a lot more serious after a colonoscopy, but luckily they caught it early.

I have had gut issues for more years than I care to admit but recently I’ve made such progress by actually not eating as ‘healthy’. I was eating overnight oats with fruit, chia seeds, nuts etc, then I was always trying to ‘eat the rainbow’ and add lentils etc to my vegan diet. Ive realised that this was all too much for my stomach. I now think of spreading these foods across a couple of weeks rather than daily. Hope this may help.
@wonderwoman5528

Omg I’m the same. My gut doesn’t like too much of a certain type of fibre. I get bloated and can’t digest too much in one go. It’s annoying because we’re always told to have 5 a day and eat the rainbow, but it doesn’t work for all of us.
@rachelparkes9806

Getting rid of oats was the best thing I did (although I’m gutted as I loved them). I was starting the day off with too much fibre then spent the day adding salad, fruit, veg, hummus etc etc. it was too much. The more my stomach hurt and was upset the more ‘healthy’ food I added to try and fix it! 🤦🏼‍♀️

I'm so happy you're open to reading more of Clarice Lispector's work! She made me fall in love with Brazilian literature when I was in high school, but she is not everyone's cup of tea. With that said, I must say I find it very difficult to recommend one book, so I'll give you three and you can see which one interests you the most. My absolute favorite book of hers is "Água Viva" many people say this is the book that best shows her essence, it has lots of metaphors, it's very philosophical, and often feels like you're reading poetry. I feel like it's one of those books you can reread multiple times throughout your life and have different thoughts about it. I also recommend "The Hour of the Star" is less full of metaphors and more "realistic", focused on the sad life of the poor protagonist and the society that surrounds her. It's usually used as her introductory book, being a quick and easy read. The opening and the closure of this book are wonderfully written, in my opinion. Last but not least, "The Passion According to G.H" this one will be more or less like the short stories you've read, but ends up being very philosophical, and it's one of her most iconic books! I also have one short story I'd like to recommend, "The Egg and The Chicken", I just find it fascinating haha and there's an interview where she says she doesn't comprehend it very well, there are many essays about it. She was a fascinating writer and woman, once you start to try to understand her, you end up reading her entire work.

Can't wait to watch this. I think it would be interest to see how you would react reading Mistborn. I think that you loving books that make you think and the lovely magic of classic books and poetry that feeds your soul with thoughts, feelings and ideas, adult fantasy is a genre that has all of that mixed with deep exploration of how humans react in different situations. Authors like Sanderson who like to focus on one mental health issue and just showcase how hard it is to live with it or authors like Erikson or Jordan that their characters are so real and so flawed and you are there with them seeing how they react to everything and feeling everything, crying with them on battlefields, crying with them seeing how bad war is, crying with them when life seems to be against then, crying with them when you see something so beautiful that you just cant help but cry of such deep emotions you are feeling, crying with happiness of overcoming so much, being so changed but still you. I had no idea this type of books existed and I really think everyone should experience these deep emotions at least once in their life. Realize how great stories like Wheel of Time, Malazan, the Cosmere or Realm of the Elderlings). These are stories that just stay with you forever because you go through every single emotion possible with them. You live from excitement to despair to faith and to glory. I think you would love it if you see it from that light and not just the plot light. And there are so many wonderful youtuber who then explore these topics and how incredibly beautiful they are. I was talking about Mistborn because it was my entry point to this and I think it is a good entry point. Not much different from normal fantasy we are used to but it opens the door for much more inspiring and moving books/series. Mistborn (starting with the final empire) not only has such an appealing plot that, though it can start a bit "just fantasy plot" it so quickly starts mentioning so many issues so relevant. From what makes a good leader to what does it mean to trust someone, from what does it means to be free and be happy to how can you move a population of people with no faith. The following books explore more war, a character with depression, why do we need knowledge from the ones that came before us, what can we learn from different religions, what is faith and do we need it?, is a good leader someone who does what the people want or what the people need?, how to love? how to trust? how to not give up when there seems to be no solution? how to fight the bad in life and in ourselves. And still, it does it so delicately and still, in such a simple way that is not even comparable to scopes like the whole wheel of time or even 2-3 books of Malazan. Series where you feel things you could never feel otherwise. You will take phrases and images with your forever. Those characters will be family to you. You will cry asking "why? why? why?", "this isn't fair!" but you will also cry smiling of how worth it it is. How beautiful moments are. You will cry seeing a single moment in the middle of millions of words. You will laugh with them. Be annoyed. And learn so much about yourself with them in the way. Again, I never imagined this type of genre existed. It feels like reading poetry in a plot. You are always questioning yourself and feeling so many things if you take the book that way. It is one of the most amazing things book have done to me because you join the amazing feeling of reading and getting lost in a world with the exploring yourself and criticizing that you have with poetry, philosophy, classics or even Realistic fiction like backman that is always making you think. I think if you give it some tries you will love how human these books are, ruby. And I am already so excited thinking of more people knowing this magic that was hidden from me and so many others. You will truly live a thousand lives as your own. And take them with you.

I read The White Book and The Vegetarian by Han Kang early this year. I had heard a lot of good things about Han Kang beforehand but for some reason I didn't dare to read her works. Now I have finally mustered enough courage to get into her and I only have one word to describe these two books : PHENOMENAL!🤩😍 Two other phenomenal books I have read this year so far are Almond by Sohn Won-pyung (I do LOVE Korean literature so much) and The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath☺️ I read Tuesdays with Morrie when I was in 9th grade and I loved it too! Another book by Mitch Albom I read at middle school was For One More Day, and it was the first book in my life to have ever made me cry🫣

I would definitely recommend watching the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes movie! Very similar to what you said about the Queens Gambit, it's very much the book to screen. I think the actors were fantastic and the fact that it brings the music to life which is a big part of the book was so so well done ☺

Hey Ruby, Just wanted to say, you are beautiful and doing an outstanding with your YT! Your channel is my all time favorite! I also had a request, I have seen how nicely you balance with mid term break with studies and relaxation. Sometimes it gets overwhelming to have that balance and we force ourselves to be productive. Sometimes vacations make us feel guilty of not making utmost use of time. If you could please talk about this in your upcoming videos, it would be of great help! Have a great day. Thank you :))

I recall that you love the book Little Women. Have you read March by Geraldine Brooks. It won the Pulitzer prize and is based on the story of the father from Little Women during his time in the war and then when he goes home.

Recently I watched a video from two years ago of yours on letter writing and other bits, you mentioned the book "Art of War" and that you found the book let down your expectations of it. Might I suggest another book that combines both the scholar and warrior.... "The Book of Five Rings" by Miyamoto Musashi.

When I was starting my PhD program a professor gave me an exercise. He said make a list of all the books you want to read. These could be academic, biography, fiction, essay collections, etc. Then he said add to that list new books you hear of in the next 12 months and want to read. The list he said will be endless. You will never be able to read all the books. And of course the list continues to grow beyond that because there are always new books you want to read. He was correct. It is a never ending list of books to read, most of which I will never have enough time to complete.

Anne Bronte is my #1 Underrated Writer. I love her ability to paint really scathing pictures of certain types of people. I want to ask if you younger readers, Ruby and followers, have read Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh. We didn't say Young YA when I first read it, but I still love it as an adult. It is at its heart a book about becoming a writer, wrapped in non-conformity and friendship and observing the world. Try it out! And also Bronte.

Ruby if you want to read a good book of Henry James, read Washington Square, because it is so good. And read "the middle years", because it is the story Truman Capote and others writers always quote.

As an Irish person, I found your review of Clare Keegans novel quite bland, as the book deals with the abuses of the Catholic Church which Ireland had struggled with. I feel you may have missed the books premise.

I can never quite understand why someone is not in awe of Henry James' style and prose. The elegance of his sentences is breath-taking, the psychological depth of his novels is staggering. Maybe try reading 'The Portrait of a Lady'- this is a novel which never ceases to move me.

29:10 I love the idea of Hamnet: “Shakespeare, behind the scenes” or “Shakespeare, by those who knew him”. 33:33 Listening to your description, that book bears striking resemblance to the life of Louis XIV’s infamous mistress, Madame de Montespan. She was so scared of death that she regularly took part in (extremely gruesome) devil worshiping sessions, in the hopes that it would grant her eternal life (it did not). 50:30 Voltaire was the quintessential thinker of the luminaries (“Lumières”), but he had a high opinion of himself which made him arrogant at times. He game himself an aristocratic name (de Voltaire, even though he was born Arouet). A French aristocrat once confronted him on that fact, and he replied: “My name begins where yours ends!” 57:30 The Merchant of Venice is my favourite of Shakespeare’s plays (I haven’t read half of Shakespeare’s plays). But you can tell Shakespeare wasn’t a maths person. Shylock keeps talking about his interest rates, without ever giving an actual number. I was dying to know! 1:11:30 This is so interesting. It’s true that we hear about autism in boys more often than autism in girls (I remember the film x + y), but we know so little about psychology, and so little about autism, yet we know how different boys and girls are genetically (literally XY or XX). There’s probably a lot of deduction work to be done here just by comparing the two. This could be a treasure chest of psychology! 1:13:05 I remember: “We locked ourselves in a van to read Holly Jackson’s new book.” It feels like a generation ago, even though it was just a year. I cannot begin to fathom how I will feel a year from now, or what the world will look like. But I feel change, and as much as I value facts and logic, my intuition is rarely incorrect. It leaves me with the Bob Dylan song “The Times” playing in my head (half playing). That song is from 1963, when tremendous change was at hand. Perhaps it is time for the world to come full circle…
