Just to clarify, the Baku is said to eat NIGHTMARES specifically, not all dreams. Though there is also an element to the story about it eating your hopes and desires if you call it too many times.

It's a bit of a disservice to not mention that Monol like, transforms in its attacks and emotions. It's not just a rectangle stone. There's a whole face in there! And tentacles. Yes, seriously. Big MR(2) fan here, nice to see it get some exposure through a bigger channel. It's a cult classic sim game for a reason. Welcome any new fans! Also in the new DX version, you CAN unlock and RAISE the cool enemy monsters. You couldn't before, you can, now. It's pretty cool of a change.

With any luck we will get a MR6 or remakes of the other three. I wouldn't mind having access to MH4 and 5 especially (not a fan of 3 although i do have it).

'Monster Rancher' was right up there with 'Pokemon' and 'Digimon' as cool kid show growing up. The disks for the games in the PS1 were early AR and thus cool as Coolaid. Nostalgia.

If I remember right they reason that Pixie monsters looks so well endowed is because of them wanting to make one of the secret ones Kasumi for DOA and because of how she looked in the anime. That's why Pixies don't look so provocative in Monster Rancher 3 & 4. I would love to see you continue with other monsters that came in later in the game series also.

Interesting this to note is that when you first get a pixie in MR1 they aren't well endowed and only become so once they reach their prime. Although now that I said that it sounds kinda creepy.

I have this idea of a fan game that'd merge Pokemon, Digimon, and Monster Rancher. You'd start out in the Pokemon world and eventually find yourself being the 1st to test out a new digifying technology. You enter the Digiverse (Digimon world) and you become separated from your return point. You discover Digimon, and find out Pokeballs don't work in the Digiverse (later on Digiballs will be developed). A little further in you come across an extremely powerful Digimon that offers to lead you back to your return terminal. It leads you to a different return terminal and when you use it, you come out in the Monster Rancher world.

When I was a kid I saw Monol and the dragon form of Mu for the first time and loved the designs. I loved how simple Monol is and felt it added some extra mystery to it. It's so powerful it doesn't need features! And I just liked the idea of a dragon with fur on it.

Sometimes the ads come in mid-word, and the roll back makes sure you get the whole word. And Sometimes you get to rehear something that made you want to roll back a bit anyway - which is not precise at all to do manually on an hour-long video.

Beaclon is actually "Beatle Cyclone" mixed together cause it's a wind monster that creates cyclones (probably with its wings!)

I didn’t know this, but getting a good condition monster rancher from ps1 is extremely expensive. I never understood this game but loved playing it on ps. Can’t wait to get it on switch

Oh if you think thats great look at what it does for other monsters later on in the series. Everything it runs into is either evil or edgy. I think that if MR ever did a cross over with sonic that the way to get shadow would be to fuse sonic with a joker.

Not really clones, they're more of an entier genre of games. Monster taiming, monster raising, monster collectors are all for the most part pretty accurite names with monster taimers/ monster raising being the most used names.

I'm not surprised a video game series/great anime like this is all but forgotten. The fan base stayed primarily in Japan even though we had games through the PS2/DS era I believe, not including the mobile game I was able to use for one day before the servers shut down. This is my more extreme version of Pokémon training games, especially if you play EVO for the PS2. I still to this day haven't finished that story but I'm looking forward to buying 1+2 later tonight and being even more nostalgic, although I wish it was just a revamp or reboot instead of a two-gane remake that limits the number of Monster species to raise

Monster Rancher 4 is my all time favorite. There are a few points to Monster Rancher 2 that I prefer, like seeing your hit chance and how monsters generally tend to combine both ways. Evo was a step down from 4, although it did a couple good things, like each monster can combine multiple times and the skill cap be raised from 999 to 2000.

34:55 I can imagine if Pokemon did that. Using a Sonic game for a Shaymin with high speed stats, an LoZ game to unlock a green Honedge, a Donkey Kong game for a Rillaboom in a tie. And of course, Smash Bros could give you a Pikachu in one of its alt costumes that has the specials in its moveset for its four attacks.

Honestly, I think it would have been better if the fusions of the two monsters were more extreme than just "different color" or "same model but with wings". Also some cooler names would have helped too...

Check out the original Jade Cocoon for PSX! Fusing monsters actually combines their meshes and textures, and every monster has a few stages of growth where they physically get larger and proportions change, so you can get some really surprising results. You can beat the main game in like 15-20 hours on a first playthrough and some friends and I used to plow through it in a weekend and then compare teams. The variety was always ridiculous.

Later games do give the crossbreeds alot more visual diversity, such as AlohaSaurian having a flower around it's neck. I'm sure the PS1 hardware was just relatively limiting at the time.

Nah. "Better" names aren't needed. Pokemon wastes so much time with names that Monster Rancher never fell into. Monster Rancher's basic names means they had plenty of time to make an actual good game.

MGT4 continues to be one of the best games I’ve ever played. As I got older and grew away from games, I happened to pick this game up and I could not put it down. That hasn’t happened since assassins creed games. I’d love some more on the series.

I'm probably never gonna buy monster rancher but if I ever did I would exclusively use the Monol based monsters, like imagine you send out your little whatever saurian or something and your opponent has like twenty gigantic unfeeling unstoppable walls, that's terrifying.

Monster Rancher 2 is one of my favorite games. I still keep my old playstation around just so I can play it from time to time. I was so stoked to see that it was being added to the switch and steam. Hopefully this means the series can get more love and a proper new game.

Also the monol + worm sub breed not only is the worst monol variety but also worst monster; bad lifespan and bad stat gains overall, I tried raising it but no matter how hard I try the thing is just plain horrible

These vids are always great and part of my wishes we could get for for digimon, but that would be ridiculous, there are more digimon than pokemon, and they aren't neatly organized by stuff like a dex number or generation. Oh well, a boy can dream...

Maybe they start with a particular series or game. Alternatively, focus on Digi-Destined to start out. I'd also love to see a Royal Knights/Yggdrasil deep dive since they pop up so often through different iterations.

I have never played Monster Rancher until a few days ago, because it's one of my boyfriend's favorite childhood games. And holy moly! We've had so much fun playing it! I haven't been able to put it down! I was taking notes during this whole video for neat looking monsters I want.

"Heuy" is, most definitely, in no way, shape or form a German name or term, friendo. Also, for Laguna/Ragnarock, I'd assume that "Laguna" is just a romanization of "Ragna" (Ra-Gu-Na).

I disagree. It's not popular because a monster raising sim isn't everyone's cup of tea. Adopting Pokemon's naming convention would've been even worse on its reputation of being a "Pokemon clone".

This game was a big part of my childhood. I tried hundreds of CDs. Monolith was by far the strongest, like ridiculously OP in comparison to the others. Nice to see this game get a bit of attention. I don't remember the ape, the ghost or the disk monster tho.

They all have obtuse ways of unlocking. You need to let a monster die for the ghost, ape requires combining 2 spoiled monsters, and metalner is a random event so long as you said you believe in aliens during the questions at the beginning of the game.

I have been a Pokemon fan since 2001 and already had a huge amount of respect for Pokemon designers and name creators. But after seeing two videos on Monster Rancher, as well as videos about TemTem, Nexomon, BugSnax etc. my respect for people behind the Pokemon skyrocketed. Thank you for your hard work, Lockstin! Could I suggest you going over every demon from Demikids Light and Dark versions next? It is my third favorite Monster Collecting JRPG behind Pokemon and Digimon. I've also played first two Dragon Quest Monsters, Dokapon Monster Hunter, Robopon, Robopon 2 (it have very different robots from first one), MedaBots Rokusho and MetaBee versions, but none of them had monsters as good as DemiKids

2:06 90% of PSO2 Global's localization in a nutshell. Couldn't even keep the shared kana in the names second tier wolf enemies in the forest and tundra areas consistent, it's real shameful. Seeing and/or hearing "Risa" in PSO2 Global will never not make me irrationally angry.

A couple notes. Gidras is strongly based on Ghidorah. All the Doodles are based on a Tecmo arcade game, Ganbare Ginkun. Also for Tasman, you showed the image of Noble Saurian again.

Check out pyrofalkons lets play extravaganza, he's a really good entry point for monster rancher and is pretty well known in the community for the game. Hes alao just a chill dude.

Keep in mind if you want the full experience from this game you will want to try the original version just to experience the cd swapping aspect. If you don't care about that small bit then the dx version works fine as you will have access to thousands of different cd data to use for generating monsters and considering the game is 30 dollars for two games its not that bad of a deal.

38:55 Pretty sure that's based on the fan-favorite kaiju Gan-Q from the Ultraman franchise first seen in the 1998 Ultraman Gaia. I only know about him because I was looking up tokusatsu-themed CASTs made in PSO2 on Twitter. Somehow someone took the off-brand gundams and turned them into a giant eyeball monster.

When you mentioned "Tombstone," you make the remark about a wrestler, but he's actually called The Undertaker. However, his signature finishing move throughout his career was called the Tombstone Piledriver, so I'll give you credit there. ^^

Laguna is apparently a very, very popular mistransliteration. In every instance I have seen it so far it's much more likely that the original intent was for it to be transliterated as "Ragna", short for Ragnarok. Such as the character from Final Fantasy 8 and the Ult of Lina from DotA. Lina Inverse, whom this character is based on originally had a spell called "Ragna Blade", and obviously they call it "Laguna Blade" in the game.

I remember as a kid picking out a dvd of Monster Rancher that had the first 12 episodes on it at the dollar store. Finished it, thought it was neat then did nothing else with the series after that.

Yes, I cant wait for Monster Rancher 1 and 2. The first brings back some of my best childhood memories with my now estranged cousin. Never played the 2nd so I'm looking forward for that!!!

Not exactly breeding. You freeze them, then combine them. It's why every 2 monsters combine into something... except Phoenix. Phoenix doesn't combine with anything.

45:47 It's probably already been brought up multiple times but the name of the wrestler in that image isn't Tombstone, that's The Undertaker. The Undertaker's signature move was the Tombstone Piledriver, and there was a different wrestler that briefly went by the name Tombstone, so I understand the confusion. Buuut I figured I'd say it anyway
