You missed a rather interesting story about anomalocaris. Originally each part of its body was thought to be a different fossil. It’s so old that only fragmented fossils were found at first. For example, its circular mouth was a jellyfish, its body a sponge, and its claws were to be flat faced shrimp. These strangely shaped shrimp were given the name anomalocaris. If memory serves it was through comparing with a similar but smaller fossil found in China that this was corrected. This is likely why it comes from the claw fossil, as the real animal inherited the name of its claws. It is important to palaeontology as it represents the importance of international cooperation as the complete creature might never have been reported without it.

@RokuroCarisu

The true nature of Anomalocaris (or rather the related Petoya) was discovered by coincidence through a fossil that had a "shrimp tail" laying next to a "jellyfish" on top of a "sponge", which the researchers then realised were all parts of the same big animal. Anomalocaridids had soft bodies, but hard mouths and antennae, which tended to fall off as they decayed.

@@koolkraken912 Specifically, it's a reference to the Bone wars! Long, LONG, *LONG* story short. Two rich guys who didn't like each other wanted to be the ones who found the next big fossil and be famous. So they kept funding archaeology expeditions and all that. BUT, they ALSO kept funding SABOTAGE missions against the other. It's a really convoluted and interesting part of history that can be boiled down to. Wait, why wasn't mention Armaldo's armor resemblence to insect exoesqueletons? It literally has the wings of a bettle. They also were the first group of animals that came to land (well, one of the first, as other groups of arthropods may came first), like Armaldo. Or it's feathers in the neck vaguely resembling the many legs of the first ever land creatures (giant milipides, which also have a somewhat similar structure covering the legs, actually, but it's only really present in paleozoic groups). It's also a megafaunal arthropod, something common up to the end of the Permian. There are also armaldo's legs which are similarly outward facing like those of stem-tetrapods or basal tetrapods as the more advanced legs (like those of the dinosaurs or mammals) only developed in the Mesozoic, in fact, Armaldo's legs and posture resemble more of the semi-erect posture of synapsids of the permian. Albeit the strangest part of it was the comparisong to a dinosaur. Not everything bipedal is dinosaurian, and outside of that, I don't see the relation. Heck, even the posture is bad as it's an upright stance unlike the horizontal stance of theropod dinosaurs (or other groups for that matter). Theropods are also infamous for their relatively small arms, unlike Armaldo. Edit: Armaldo being armored can also be a play for exosuit to extreme enviroments since it is one of the first Pokémon to venture to land. Albeit this seems far-fetched personally. I also hope this doesn't come off hostile, I'm very surprised because this channel usually digs deep in these designs and there is a lot to dig in Armaldo that wasn't touched upon.

You’re on the right track, however the first land creatures were not giant millipedes or beetles, which came much later, but a class of arthropods called eurypteryids, aka sea scorpions. In addition, the sort of feathery look on both Armaldo and Anorith are probably just more reference to Anomalocarids/Radiodonts.

What's interesting is that Anorith is perfectly capable of climbing trees and Armoldo is the ancestor of most bug types including Scyther. Also Armoldo could be a reference to when gaint insects ruled the earth just like Yammega hence why its armor is quite indestructible. There are also real life creatures that are commonly called dinosaur shrimp and they are as you can guess really old and weird.

A few things: 1: I love the casual way he says "Probably jail time." 2: The last section of the video is labeled "Heresy." 3: When I first saw Armaldo (on my friend's DS screen), I though its nose were its eyes, and its eyes were it ears. I have never seen it a shy, timid Pokemon, but rather as a killing machine, bred for combat and ready to destroy all that gets in its way. Similar to how I see Excedrill and Hydreigon.

The first fossil of Anomalocaris ever found was the two "pinsirs" on it's front, which the arqueologist thought was two shrimps perfectly side by side, so that's where the name came from. He thought it was two shrimps caught in a mating ritual or something. Later, a fossil with the mouth, which was thought to be some kind of jellyfish, I think, and one with the rest of the body was found, but they where thought to be two different species, so each got their name. Eventually it was discovered that what was thought to be three different species from very different groups where actually different parts of the same one. So, by convention, the oldest name was chosen, which was Anomalocaris. So he got this name not because they thought it's shape was of a weird shrimp, but because they thought it was two shrimps acting weird. Also, Anomalocaris and Kabuto's inspiration, the Trilobites, are the first case of a revolutionary arms race. The Trilobites kept getting harder as the softer ones kept dying to Anomalocaris, which in case the Anomalocaris that where too weak to crack the harder Trilobites starved. It lead to one of the hardest carapaces of the Cambrian, the Trilobites, with the strongest predators of the same period, the Anomalocaris. Fascinating stuff.

Everything I'm about to say is based on memory. It may or may not be entirely accurate, but I think there was someone who made a speculative zoology evolution of anomalocaris, that was a filter feeder instead of a predator (it had filters coming off of its mouth things) then later at some point some paleontologist found fossil evidence that such a creature might have actually existed

For Armaldo I very much think that it is inspired by the Eurypterid (aka Sea Scorpion) that was around 467.3 million years ago. Also in Eurypterids some scientists believe that they could have developed organs that would allow them to breath air while on land (at least for limited amounts of time). So the big claws, long body that still looks similar to Anorith, and two legs for standing on land could be what went into the design for Armaldo.

Reminds me of how in the lists i made with my two brothers, divvying up every Pokemon amongst us; i gave myself an Anorith even though i already had an established Armaldo named Zarak. The explanation for me having "Malaca" is she stays an Anorith and is adorable. Armaldo's dex entry reminds me so much of the shrimp that punches so hard the water around its claws starts boiling

I think that cradily can also have an inspiration based on the neck rings to have a longer neck that are used by some people in some cultures, and that is what the 3 yellow rings in its "neck" are

0:32 Shaking in shock at remember Armaldo is rock bug even though I've been using one in PMD DX lately and they show you the typing of your pokemon right before they depart. All those water moves do trip you up

I got to catalog the springer collection at the smithsonian museum of natural history. I worked exclusively on crinoids, and it's likely that whatever species cradily is based on was a later species, while Kabutops is based on one of the earliest instances of trilobites. There's a huge amount of diversity in crinoid fossils, especially in how they looked. I had to catalog everything from intricate hieroglyphicus that have hieroglyphic looking patterns on them, to crinoids that anchored themselves to the ground by having a base that's just like...a twenty pound cannonball (not fun to carry 40 of those around). Also, anomolacaris (pronounced a-NOM-a-la-CAR-is) is named that because they initially saw it's "mouth appendages" and thought they were weird shrimp. The name came from their understanding of only one part of the animal, not the whole. It is in fact not considered a shrimp at all. The only thing the two really have in common is that they're arthropods, and even then that's up for debate (I used to argue about this with people at the smithsonian a lot lol) because the "mouth appendages" don't fit quite well into the official definition of what an arthropod is meant to be. Overall great video that caters to both my love of fossils and pokemon

Armaldo is probably my favorite fossils cause it looks cool, it’s a bug type, and I love it’s character in that one special episode of Pokémon mystery dungeon explorers of sky

The cilia things on anorith and armaldo look similar to the visual shorthand the Aztecs used in their codices to communicate the idea of a knife. Maybe this is trying to communicate that these pokemon are sharp, old and fierce?

I have invertebrate anatomy this period this is a pretty cool way of seeing some of that in a different context. Also Echinodermata (the starfish/sea lily phylum) is in the deuterostoma superfylum together with vertebrates and lancelets, so they are actually relatively closely related to us. (Although you really wouldn't say that from their anatomy they are really weird both inside and out)

Anorith and Armaldo being based on Anomalocaris makes me want more Fossil Pokemon based on creatures that lived before the Dinosaurs like Dimetrodon or Gorgonopsid,

Haha, your doctor quote reminds me of a moment not long after pogo gen 3 release. I got a craydily and remarked to my friend "hey look it's a green peen" was dark didn't see the stranger coming down the road, he looks over "if it's green mate, you might wanna go to a doctor". Me and my friends basically on the floor laughing so hard XD

Lileep and Cradily survived up until 100 million years ago, which means they could still be older than Kabuto and Kabutops.

Another neat thing about those tunicates is that tunicates are the only animals which can produce cellulose, which is the fibre commonly found in the cells of plants. So it perfectly stands to reason the only grass type that's fully based on an animal will have a bit of tunicate in it. I guess armaldo could have been expounded on a bit more, but it seems the developers found it hard to look for room for improvement with anomalocaris, it's a pretty neat animal. It'd be cool to see more prehistoric invertebrates, I'd love a hallucigenia and opabinia fossil duo.

You got a little bit wrong on lileeps Pokédex entry, it says it “went” extinct 100 million years not that it lived then which means it could be as old or older than kubotops it just lived longer.
