Going through my 1 to 5 star reviews of books where a biologist is a main character, and talking about environmental fiction and climate fiction as a genre. This is a part of my environmental book series! I am a wildlife biologist/environmental scientist so I wanted to talk about how accurate these portrayals are lol

I saw Migrations in the stack and thought “oh, please don’t be one of the books she disses.” 😅 Migrations was easily my favorite find of 2020. Was a two sitting read and the end was pretty devastating. A reread is needed.

You would maybe like Barbara Kingsolvers Flight Behavior about a mysterious new migration of monarchs in a country town where a wildlife biologist comes to study the phenomenon, but they talk about a lot of other climate topics! It’s really good and you learn about monarch biology throughout the book. And Water Knife is a great one too in the Cli-Fi genre!!

I just finished Migrations a few weeks ago and I'm still thinking about it--I think it'll be my favorite of all of 2021. This is a fantastic list! The MadAddam Trilogy by Margaret Atwood is another favorite of mine so I'm happy to see it. Definitely gonna check out everything else you mentioned!

I love Where the Crawdads Sing! It was my favorite book in 2020 and I may reread it here soon

At lot of those books sound super interesting. I recently finished a book called The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline and it takes place in a near future world that has been ravaged by climate change and I quite enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed the film Annihilation, get's pretty weird by the end, but I'd be interested in reading the book and the others in the series.

I saw the tumbnail with the cover of Migrations and "worst portrayal of a woman scientist" and I was so shocked because I loved that one so much. Then I watched the full video and my faith in everything was restored haha. Really awesome list: I absolutely love this kind of sub-genre. Have you read The Lightkeepers by Abby Geni? It's about a nature photographer rather than biologist, but it has beautiful nature-writing and reminded me in tone of Migrations.

HAHA yes migrations is so freakin good! Best portrayal of a woman in science tbh, I related so much to the protagonist and her struggles even though she wasn't a "traditional" biologist. I haven't heard of that book but I will check it out, thanks for the recommendation!

I want to read all of these! I’m especially interested in the book about the gulls. When I moved to Utah I was really surprised to see so many of them in a totally landlocked state, and they don’t even seem to leave for the winter! There are no fish in the great salt lake so I think they must survive off of landfills! The California gull is weirdly the state bird of Utah. They saved a bunch of crops from locusts so the settlers were really grateful to them and there’s even a monument to them in downtown salt lake. They are definitely survivors!

Haha I thought the same thing when I saw them in Alberta! I had never lived away from the coast so I didn't realize that gulls could be inland until then :P

I wanted to ask what one might say in answering this question for a biology college fellowship- what skills do you have that would assist the faculty mentor? I have to write a personal statement for a college fellowship I am applying for, and I have no clue as to how I should answer this question. Thanks for the videos; they are so helpful!

You should try Reason For Hope by Jane Goodall it’s amazing it’s an autobiography of her life.

Have you read The Back of the Turtle by Thomas King? It’s a really good book written by an Indigenous author about a scientist who ended up causing a huge environmental disaster. It gives the POV of a few characters including the scientist and the man he works for. It’s all really interesting and if you wanted to pick up another book, that would be my recommendation!

What did you mean by problematic characters in crawdads? Are they characters that were portrayed as good?

There are some arguments I’ve seen that Jumpin and Mabel were racist stereotypes. They weren’t characters portrayed as bad but I think the fact Delia Owens & husband have made racist comments about African communities they worked in in the past made people critically analyze her portrayal of Black characters even more, and stereotypical portrayals of your only non white characters can also be harmful. There's a ton, Silent Spring by Rachel Carson is a classic. You can also probably grab some introductory textbooks on environmental science if you want a really basic overview of everything.
