Hand forged? On their homepage it says "All Council axe heads are drop forged from high quality tool steel. The forging is then processed in an abrasive robotic work cell where the trim lines are removed, the shape refined and the cutting edges are ground, which yields highly consistent heads."

Mine measures out to 23 3/4 inches. I think the 24inch advertised length is probably the handle before they hang the head and trim the excess.

The length of the axe is the length of the handle before hafting. They trim the head afterwards. Still, it is a bit misleading, I don't know why they measure that way. It reminds me of hard drive being classed in GB but then the GB is described as the mathematical 1000³ bytes instead of the computer 1024³ bytes.

I'm coming off a crappy Gerber axe. I've done a lot of research, and this appears to be a logical next step for me. I'm not about to drop 150+ dollars on an axe I'll use 5 times a year - only one of those times being a full on wilderness excursion.

Hello. I’m trying to put together a set of axe/hatchet. I would like to be of the best quality and also cover anything from utility, hunting, camping, bushcraft and big log splitting. What axes would you recommend to make a set and possibly pass it on to my children one day. Thank you

The only thing with the axe that I don’t love is the Rockwell hardness is low 50s and for hardness Ik knives better than axes but I still like my tools to be higher in the 50s so they maintain edge longer and are easier to keep razor sharp I also think the handle on the longer more pack axe size may just be a little to long for a good bushcraft axe I think the 20-21 inch range might be a little better id have to use it to really know but yeah I also tend to like shorter handled bigger axe head axes like the German ones so it’s also a preference thing for me

ReviewOutdoorGear with the way the edge is done. And the cuts in the axe so the wood doesn't stick. How many times can this axe be sharpened before it has no material left? Or be fixed from damage then there's now edge left to sharpen?
@oldtimer4567
@oldtimer4567 5 жыл бұрын
How good is the steel & what's your opinion of how well the edge holds up? Another reviewer I saw stated that the CT pack axe steel was much better than that of Gransfors & similar Swedish axes because the CT pack axe's edge would "roll" but wouldn't "chip". And, that reviewer was referring to its factory "edge" & using it to process wood as designed & intended. Axe makers years ago strived to produce an axe with an edge that would neither roll or chip. If the steel was soft enough to roll, or hard enough to chip, it was considered poor quality. It's an interesting axe, but for me, especially with the factory profile & sharpening, if the edge "rolls" from using it for its intended purpose, I would think it was poor quality. If the axe's steel is soft enough for the edge to "roll", as the other reviewer stated, & that makes it a top quality axe, then there's alot of cheap imports that have edges that will "roll" under there intended use also & they're definitely not top quality.

So what is the overall consensus of this ax? Is it a sweet looking designed to bring a higher price tag and compete with top shelf axes or is it worth every penny? Good luck with your business I'll check out your site. FYI did you know that you chopped your steak to the tune of jingle bells? Merry Christmas.

Ok I bought a Hults Bruk Akka and then found this video of the Council tool axe. Pretty much the same axe as far as the weight and size. I also have a Gransfor Bruk small forest axe on the way to compare to the Akka. My question to you Review Outdoor Gear is which of the 3 do you prefer and why?
@ReviewOutdoorGear
@ReviewOutdoorGear 4 жыл бұрын
I would go with the Akka or the Small Forest Axe - and of you want me to only give you one recommendation - I would say the Small Forest from GB.
@Jason.F.

@@ReviewOutdoorGear could you give me some details on why the SFA or the Akka and why the council doesn't make the cut? I've used a cold steel pipe hawk for years with a 22 in handle and really like the extra length with almost no extra weight, which is why I bought the Akka. But I like the idea of the Council being American made and about the same weight and length as the Akka. The SFA has a cult following which always makes me wonder if there is just to much hype involved. I would really appreciate your input in greater detail if you don't mind. Thanks.

Good grain orientation? The butt of the handle shows it is or nearly is a 45 degree grain orientation to the head. As far as I'm concerned that's neither good nor ideal & closing in on just ok to poor IMHO. I expect a parallel to the head grain orientation on an axe in this price range. Not saying it's not a nice axe head or council is a bad co., but C'MON MAAAN! If you wanna claim this is a top tier axe you've got to show that in the finished work. Seems like this is becoming more & more acceptable today, in handles, in all price ranges as I see reviews complaining of this from Gränsfors Bruk on down the line.
@alschbachb
@alschbachb 4 жыл бұрын
tank0211 a 45 degree is perfectly fine actually. I’ve seen a lot of granfurs brok axe with 45 degree grain.

a lot of nonsense going around re the grain angle. this is a myth. the handle on the axe he showed is totally fine. most just need to learn to use the axe properly, to avoid damaging the handle. not rely on some magikk grain or leather condoms around the poll.

Even tho you can use the pommel for hammering? Seems like the blade geometry is better at chopping
@ReviewOutdoorGear
@ReviewOutdoorGear Жыл бұрын
The pommel is ground clean but I don’t think they recommend using it on anything other than wood. But that being said it’s still an advantage. However the Small Forest axe or Scandinavian Forest axe from GFB had a more slender blade that cuts wood slightly better than these axes. Of course that all comes at about twice the price so… pros and cons. 😂
