I don't think he's laughing. It's sort of a tick. But he really needs to learn how to read expressions and respond accordingly. He took the wrong tone from the very beginning. The bond was revoked already. You need to be apologetic and persuasive and appeal to the judge. Why was he adopting a trial stance. The charges were serious. He seemed to minimialize them as if the judge was in on his old boys club. And he needs to learn how to apologize. He must have spoken 10 sentences before he apologized and then went on to trying to persuade the judge to change his mind about the bond as if the judge accepted his apology. If I were the defendant, I would be shitting bricks about now. By the way, I call BS on his excuse. Notice in the beginning when the prosecution said they didn't know where the defendant was, and see the way he said, "he's here" like he knew it would be a surprise.

@@branchcovidian2001 His "reasonable" put his client back behind bars, and almost got himself sanctioned to boot. You don't jabber about witnesses at a bond hearing, ever. That was not "good" defense lawyering. It was outright stupid. Good lawyers know what is appropriate, and what is not, in court and out. They also don't verbally assault or defame the prosecution without sound evidence to support such an attack. They also know not to advise clients regarding criminal behaviour, other than to say, "don't."

The lawyer is so far out-of-line he needs to be censured by the Bar. His accusations regarding the prosecutor are outrageous. He told his client to ignore a warrant for his arrest and not to turn himself in. He implies the judge has not read the report carefully even after the judge tells him he has read it. He keeps laughing in a sneering way. He interrupts the prosecutor when he knows better. This is a bond hearing and he keeps talking about the case. He only behaves appropriately after he is told his behaviour is sanctionable.

Its why the lawyer crapped his pants at the end and begged simpson for forgiveness, he didnt strike me as a repeat offender, but he may be. As an aside, lawyers can quite often not fulfil their duties to clients but not fulfil the duty to the court and the hammer of doom falls on you. She came in totally unprepared. Yes, defense should have noted the absence of any witnesses and asked for a later hearing when the prosecutor could be bothered to have her sh*t together. And left it at that. But since Simpson is essentially a prosecutor on the bench it wouldn’t have made any difference.

First cousin to the "I'm starting a new job on Monday" Like Simpson has never heard that hoary old chestnut before. The defense attorney comes out with that when he is in begging mode. A big fall from saying "if you read the report" to Judge Simpson. You often can learn a lot about an attorney by their client. And vice versa. Sloppy, slapdash, self satisfied, sense of superiority,, snide....stupid. Sanctioned? Possibly.

with court appointed attorneys, the client has little or no say in who they get. And the attorneys doing the work are usually third rate ones that can't get a job in an actual law firm above the grade of file clerk.
@greenman6141
@greenman6141 Жыл бұрын
@@jwenting Yes, but the client/defendant can refuse to work, even with court appointed and/or public defenders. That happens quite a lot. There's a woman who has been in jail for over 3 years in Florida, who has run through 6 attorneys, because she doesn't agree with them. They aren't stuck with what they get.Which is good...they should have that right. Hence my original comment. A defendant will stay with an attorney who meshes with their views and style, and vice versa.
@greenman6141
@greenman6141 Жыл бұрын
@@JodyOwen-we6oo As I just responded to someone else...people are not forced to stay with a court appointed attorney. I'll repeat what I wrote: - using as examples cases that are well known in the media..so people with have familiarity with them. For example, there is a woman in Florida who has been in jail, awaiting trial, for over 3 years. Her attorneys, because we are talking very much about the plural, are court appointed. She has been through 6 sets of them, and the 6th is on breaking ice. People are not forced to accept the attorneys that a court appoints, just as attorneys are not forced to stay with a client appointed to them. Which is right. Certainly someone in a position as vulnerable as a defendant without resources should not be wholly without say in who and how they are represented in court. Though it is also true that sometimes a court will not permit an attorney to dump a client (eg Kurt Nurmi trying to sluff off Jodie Arias) or a client to sack an attorney (eg Jodi Arias trying to get rid of Kurt Nurmi...a year later). A working relationship has to exist, and overwhelmingly involves a sympathy in style and manner. Go to court sometime to watch. Blustery bullshitting attorneys often appear to be the sibling of a blustering bullshitting client. Soft spoken attorneys don't usually last with clients who believe shouting is a good idea. Look at Trump and his bench of creatures. They are all completely at ease with lying on national television. That is NOT something that the vast majority of reputable attorneys would do. People have styles.... You, for example, rely wholly on trying to insult me and overblown vocabulary, and you are very angry, very angry with someone you've never met, never spoken to. Someone who you are attempting to bully ...or trying to impress other people with your shouty response...without ever checking to see whether: you dolt...I AM A FRIGGING ATTORNEY. Suck on that

Many years ago I used to cover courts on occasion for weekly and daily newspapers in the New York suburban area. I don't believe I have ever seen such disrespect on the part of defense attorney, I really haven't. It was all at once arrogant, sexist, and a whole bunch of other things I can't even get myself to say. The defense attorney was operating from the basis that he is the law, that he is a member of a sort of club and that he can interrupt, correct a sitting judge, smack down a prosecutor, and worst of all, essentially tell his client that he can ignore the court. That is the real damage done here.
