For the "ordinary" person of limited intelligence nothing is easier than to imagine himself an exceptional and original person and to take delight in this delusion with no misgivings. It has been enough for some of our young ladies to cut their hair short, put on blue eyeglasses, and call themselves Nihilists, for them to persuade themselves that, in putting on their spectacles, they immediately acquired "convictions" of their own. It is enough for a man to feel in his heart a droplet of humanitarian and benevolent emotion to immediately persuaded that no one else feels so deeply as he and that he stands at the vanguard of civilization. It is enough for another to pick some thought he has heard, or to read a page at random somewhere, to believe at once it was "his own idea," engendered in his own brain. Naïve arrogance -- if one may so express it -- reaches extraordinary proportions in such cases; it is all quite unbelievable, yet very frequently met with. This naïve arrogance, this perfect confidence of the stupid man in himself and his own talent is superbly portrayed by Gogol in his marvelous character Pirogov. Pirogov has no doubt he is a genius, and even superior to all genius; in fact, he is so certain of it that he never once questions himself on the matter; indeed, for him questions don't exist. --Dostoevsky

As a consequence people who dislike Rick and Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existencial catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius unfolds itself on their television screens. @ahappilydrunkpuppy89613 жыл бұрын
You really need to understand the meaning of hypocrite before using it loosely. She’s simply telling Rock her perspective and he’s judging her when simply the way they view things are different. At the end of the day, we are all hypocrites. We all love preaching about peace and justice and when push comes to shove, what do we do about it? For example, what do you see when you see a homeless person? Probably a druggie or a lazy, smelly bum right? In reality, they are some person with a mental illness or a veteran of some kind or a person who was abandoned since they were minors or someone who was sex trafficked into this country (yes this is real) and in reality these descriptions make up the homeless population. Now knowing this information, what are you going to do about it? Nothing, right? I doubt youre going to build a shelter or make a mental health clinic to prevent this. I bet you dont give them money and ignore them when you pass by these people right? At the end of the day, you have the tools and the resources and even you dont have them, you could easily attain them, but the irony is is that you wont do it. You are no more a hypocrite than anyone.

For me, This was a philosophical moment in anime that made realize something I already knew. Things only have value because others agrees that it does, but apart from that, it’s really just matter. The skull was and medal were examples of this. The medal doesn’t need explaining, but a skull is just a conglomeration of calcium and other minerals that just happens to make up a part if the human body. It only brings to mind death because, well, usually you only see a skull (with an x-ray) when a person is dead and has decayed. Moments like this made want keep watching animes that may have not been great but if I could understand the philosophical points presented, I liked to listen to them. (Not saying this anime is bad, it’s the ass opposite. It’s amazing and awesome! The occasional philosophical moments in the show just added more enjoyment to it).

What about food? Its not valued because because people agree it is, but because it is. You dont need others approval to realize that food are superficial to survival. And isnt skull is what protect your brain from exploding after banging your head against something? You dont need others opinion to think that it is valuable right?
@lunartears67614 жыл бұрын
Full Metal Magnum I see your point about food, but in the context of the skull, in it’s current state it is technically a thing. It may have had value at one point in time when the person was alive and skull was fulfilling its purpose. However, since the person is dead, the skull isn’t fulfilling its function and thus is now a “thing”. Unless you count it rotting and fertilizing the ground, but since it’s in a submarine at the bottom of the ocean, the skull is just sitting there.

Her chemistry with Rock is incredible in the show because after enough time spent with him she does not mind at all being vulnerable around him. Her perspective may be a bit extravagant most of the times but it is a logical explanation after he childhood. Also the fact that she is an anime character doesn't mean we can't understand her or sympathise with her, after all most of the anime characters are realistic and many of their stories are based on real life.
@maximusatlas93774 жыл бұрын
@@Reddragon-hn6ot Oh when I said "shes just an anime character" wasn't to devalue her. I meant it in the sense that shes a story device not an actual person to debate over like real life politics. Also the writer of anime (who I believe died two years ago I think) wrote her as an opposite to Rock intentionally. He loved Carl Jung Psychology and made her as a "Shadow" to himself. Rock is his light side. So when they fight its more like shes losing to Rock as she falls in love with her true self. Revy was meant to represent the worse aspect of himself as he lost hope in humanity and Rock is his realization (That he as Revy were brash) that his views were wrong. In the recent arc, Revy even offhandedly stated(not to Rock) that Rock is changing her, and she hates it, but in turn the town is turning Rock into something she is afraid of and she doesn't want him to change anymore, cause she might actually have to pull the trigger on him eventually. The suspense is killing me.

This hits deep as hell...I swear...I mean yeah I was a ghetto rat and a christian, but money is the only way you can make it in this society. I realized the only way I can make it in this society is to act like I am a welcomed by this society by the way I dress and showcase myself. I am still a christian, but I understand how this society works. I make it work for me and my family. Otherwise, I would have always stayed a ghetto rat.

I love this scene. Really gives the perspective of who the real revy is. Something she tries to hide. As someone who was abused by their father and pretty much throughout childhood by women, I get Revy’s philosophy. There was a time I didn’t believe in God either even growing up Christian. I still don’t believe in love at all at least for me. She is right though in some aspects we assign sentimental value to things but universally monetary value is agreed on by society. Things are worth money. Sentimental value means nothing in terms of a society but to the person it does. Still gives me chills hearing this speech. Beautifully done. How can you know what something looks like if you haven’t experienced it and I feel like that’s the important thing that Revy is teaching Rock other than the differences in value.
@joel0joel04 жыл бұрын
ok i think many didn't get this speech. What Revy is saying here is nothing else then what Marx says, simply that in capitalism every object becomes a commodity and in this process they are stripped from any meaning, "[t]heir value will be determined by the one thing everybody can agree on. And that's money." In a society were everything is not only buyable, but where you have to buy for your daily need, money becomes seen as value it self, and in doing so money seems to keep us alive. So the Question from Rock that follows: "Is money your God?", is not so far fetched, Marx himself calls the naturalization of money and its social attributes money fetish. But Revy is smart enough to know that money is no natural thing but made from society, so she doesn't irrationally worship its attributes and its movement, but concludes logically if money is the only universal accepted representation of value, then having money means power. What Revy shows us here is how much she incorperated the logic of capitalism. Even more in that what comes next, there she talks about that there is no love, while capitalism is definitely in need of new workers and that's why needs love so new workers can be raised, it does at the same time devalues love because love can't make money, the only value everyone can agree on. Maybee you will say now, but revy also talks about the value of guns, how does that add up? It is pretty easy. To make money and to go at the market and buy and sell stuff you need the state which guarantees that the money has value, that you as a citizen are free doing your business and that other citizens don't steal from you. But Revy is not seen as a citizen, the police beats her up because she is seen as a "Chinese ghetto rat", so if the state doesn't protect her, if the police even threatens her rights as a citizen, the only way for her to secure her property and ensuring that no one f*cks with her is getting herself guns. (If you wondered why the killing of George Floyd is a big deal for many black Americans this is the reason) Also it doesn't matter what Revy wants to believe, there are definitely some moments when she wants to look at the world from Rocks moral perspective, but the world doesn't work morally and it is hard to do successful the moral thing, that is basically Rocks whole character arc. And if we look at the latest arc, the Ova about Roberta, Rocks success in saving both of them, could only be achieved through Rocks amoral actions.

@@joel0joel0 oh my good friend why do you feel attacked? Revy is such a profound character of a greatly complex nature which does not compare at all, of course, to the characters of pretenders such as Unamuno, Dostoevsky, and Goethe.

I think black lagoon is the first show, even the first piece of media I would say that might possibly give me a bit of trauma. A lot of the characters are scary and really f**ked in the head. Revy’s yes possibly one of the most messed up backstory I’ve seen. And the themes and thoughts the characters have is what made this show really f**ked. The idea of how there are people in this world are begging for help begging to be saved in this cruel and unfair world, to the point that it’s pretty much too late to turn back. and how killing someone can really f**k your brain up and give you severe trauma and to the point that you might forget why are you even doing something. Kinda like how Roberta's was acting in Roberta’s trail of blood. The fact that these things can happen in the real world makes it very scary and dark. In fact the themes and we go from way how it was written made me question what was going on in the writer’s mind when making the story. Now you may be like “then why did you continue to watch it if you weren’t enjoying it “, well, it’s just so deep and messed up. It’s like seeing two trains about to hit each other. It’s something you don’t wanna see but that’s part of you that really really does want to see it. Now that’s not to say the show is completely depressing. If you can mostly turn your brain off you can have a lot of fun watching it. Mostly just the first season. No, let me make one thing absolutely clear. Despite what I said this doesn’t mean I’m gonna go crazy. I have no interest in committing crimes so please stop looking at me with worry eyes, thank you. It’s just a story with realistic themes.
