I interviewed the late Jonathan Brandis three times between 1992 and 1995. Here are portions of two interviews for his TV series, "SeaQuest DSV" and one for the Rodney Dangerfield film, "Ladybugs." Topics covered include the start of his career, the challenges of doing "SeaQuest," being a teen sex symbol, and working with Dangerfield.

The beginning of the 1995 interview is sad because the episode he had said he was working on didn't happen because the show got canceled. The episode was something he was really looking forward to. I met Jonathan shortly before he passed away. He was such an amazing guy. He's still sorely missed.

I don’t think he had pain in his eyes at this moment ?? He was happy doing what he loved ... to my knowledge he commuted su!c!de because he couldn’t get anymore roles as a actor , he looks about 18-19 right here and he didn’t do it until he was about 27 right ? So he was still acting during this time

I still find it so strange that he is gone and that it's been 20 years this year. He was quite prolific for teen audiences in the late 90s and early 2000s and was always in teen magazines etc. He died and there wasn't much coverage surrounding his passing. It took me over a month to even find out about it.

I met Chuck Norris at the George R Brown Convention Center at the Collect-A-Con and shook hands with him and told him how I cherished him in Silent Rage, Sidekicks (with Jonathan Brandis), and in Walker Texas Ranger. I told Chuck and his wife how terrible and sad it was that 10 years after Sidekicks, that Jonathan Brandis ended up passing away from suicide, and Chuck’s wife told me more than just the depression of Jonathan and his waning career and all, but also the psychiatric medication he was taking along with the alcohol (whether with or without alcohol) was taking so much toll on Jonathan that he had no idea what he was doing, whether he felt suicidal or not. Worst of all, the psychiatric medication company has a disclaimer and used legal to be completely covered, in which they couldn’t be sued, which should be wrong. Chuck told me how much he cherished Jonathan and knows that Jonathan is resting in the everlasting safety in God’s kingdom of Heaven. All this, also, being why I don’t take psyche meds myself, especially anymore, and never will, and nothing can ever change my mind. More harm than good. Especially psychologically and financially.

He was so cool and no doubt deserving of his heartthrob status. He certainly had an intense sort of gravity to go along with his charisma. A fascinating person in more ways than just the movie star avenue. Watching some of these, I get a sort of vibe like he might have had a bad headache or was at times extremely exhausted and tense- but I think he masked everything that he was experiencing or struggling with incredibly well due to a high level of intelligence and eloquence. He was the face of my childhood in some ways and I would have loved to see him in a Netflix project or something nowadays, as I'm sure many others would as well. I don't think he really would have had to worry about his career fading out long term (people always mention that he had mentioned feeling disappointed with his career trajectory in the weeks leading up to his death). But I'm sure that part of his concern about that was due to the rigorous, merciless nature of the industry- especially in the 90's- when every top actor (especially teen heartthrobs of the day) presumedly had it drilled into them that even a small deviation from perfection could at any time result in their entire career tanking forever. Standards and aesthetics were INSANE during the 90's. Not to mention the lurking danger for children and teens in an industry full of predators, according to testimonials I've heard. That's too much pressure and trauma for someone just starting out in the atmosphere of inescapable fame. I'm sorry that Jonathan didn't have whatever kinds of support he might have needed back then. He should have had someone to talk to, but mental health wasn't even part of discourse back in 2003- it was only part of whispers and stigma.

Apparently he was considered to play adult Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars episode 2 and 3, but they decided he was a bit too old. Shame, because the opportunity probably would have kept him going. And nothing against Hayden Christensen but I would’ve loved to see what Brandis would have brought to the role. He had the perfect blend of good guy with a good heart, but with a brooding darkness bubbling under the surface.

I'm a big fan of The Neverending Story (more the novel than the films, it's much more profound). I feel it's ironic that that book is about human longing, of the painful experience of wishing to be different, of wanting to re-write our histories. Unlike the character he played, I guess Jonathan was never able to pass through those feelings. I wonder about what Jonathan wished for, especially near the end of his life. It must have been so painful, all that unfulfilled longing. I hope he found peace, and wish his story had not ended.

Love Hayden Christensen BUT Jonathan should have been anakin skywalker. He was so close to getting the part that there is concept art for Attack of the Clones that had Jonathan Brandis as the character. I unfortunately think his suicide had something to do with losing the part. It would have Re-Launched his career to be in Star Wars. He would have been the perfect anakin. Goodlooking and charming but a darkness and tragedy behind the eyes.

He killed himself because of waning fame and fallen career. If only he knew, if he would have waited, the way social media and the modern world is now, everyone is instagram and KZfaq famous and all these channels like Netflix and Amazon Prime are well known for reviving actors' careers. So sad😢.. he made a permanent decision over a temporary circumstance. in this modern world, you technically don't even need Hollywood to be famous, you can be self made these days...
