Two Russian prisoners, Vladislav and Mikhail, joined Wagner mercenary groups led by Yevgeny Prigozhin until his death and went from prisoners to soldiers in Ukraine -- until they surrendered and deserted to Ukraine.

They can also choose to stay prisoners in Ukraine until end of the war. They cant be forced to go back in Russia.
@squee222
@squee222 4 ай бұрын
@@DevonHensley211 There is no law to protect POWs from being forced back to their home country in prisoner exchanges or other terms of negotiation. This is incentive for countries to keep POWs. It also means that there is no garauntee of safety as a POW if returning to Russia would result in an execution. As such potentially the safest thing to do would be to volunteer to fight for the other side.

As for their health, or any future for that matter, ask Prigozhin. Oh, wait... I'd say, if they want to, keep them, train them for a meaningful civil purpose in life as well, and let them help rebuild Ukraine. There's plenty of work to do.

I guess Russians wouldn't want to harm their actual Spetsnaz for reconnaissance, so they use useful idiots. That really shows just how badly trained Russian troops are, to throw unskilled soldiers into battle because they need their very very few good ones for show. It's just laughable at this point.

KYIV, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Ukraine said on Thursday it was withdrawing troops from some parts of the eastern town of Avdiivka to better positions after months of heavy fighting, and battle-hardened reserve fighters from a crack brigade have joined the battle. Russia is trying to encircle and capture Avdiivka nearly two years after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine and Kyiv's foothold in the town appears increasingly shaky, with its supply lines threatened. Capturing Avdiivka is key to Russia's aim of securing full control of the two provinces that make up the industrial Donbas region, and could hand President Vladimir Putin a battlefield victory to hold up to voters as he seeks re-election next month. "In Avdiivka a manoeuvre is underway in some places to withdraw our units to more advantageous positions, in some places to force (the Russians) out of positions," Ukrainian military spokesman Dmytro Lykhoviy said in televised comments.

I truly hope they have good opsec when it comes to all matters of security, especially cybersec. I’d hate for this group and these men especially to be tracked down and targeted by black ops kill squads or Intel groups that would capture and force him to spy and submit intelligence about the groups movements or any other Ukrainian group. I wonder how the screening process is for these Russian volunteers, and how closely they’re kept to BLUFOR ops. I think they should be treated as an independent group all together and not given too much access to Intel. If they’re utilized as a completely separate detachment with a different mission set, I think it would be best for everyone’s safety. Compartmentalization of the volunteer force from the big army would be wise, and perhaps just carrying out raid/guerrilla operations with supplied Intel. This style of fighting would also work to increase the longevity of the Russian volunteers lives. Also with separating them from BLUFOR missions, it creates a lot less opportunity for betrayal.
