I have a bone stock RG500 that I have owned since 1991. I am happy to say that this bike is absolutely comfortable (remember the wonderful 80's sport bike's sit up position?). Since that time, it never once fouled a plug nor left me on the side of the road. I put oil in one hole and gas in the other, oil the chain, check water levels and tire pressure and just ride! Below 7k RPM (with the power valves) it is so very civil, smooth, agile, with good brakes. It even gets 50mpg and will act like a perfect gentleman like this all day with no complaints. But it is also the perfect partner when you give it some juice and let it sing from 7k - 10,500 RPM the front gets light, and everything gets blurry around the edges pretty quickly! Any decent 600 today will spank this old bike, but nothing for sale comes close to the exhilaration and sound of this grand magical machine. I own 34 Suzuki's (maybe subconsciously a tribute to the great Kevin Schwantz?) - mostly 2-strokes, and no less than 8 of which are Suzuki RG's! The RG500 was my first RG and it started my addiction to collecting almost the whole family: RG50, RG125, RG150, RG200, RG250 Walter Wolf, RGV-250 VJ21, RGV-250 VJ22, and the RG500). My overall collection includes Suzuki's from the 60's to the 2000's and I will tell you this one is hands down my favorite. Unlike many bikes that are remembered more fondly than they actually were, this bike is still to this day a total pleasure to own and ride everyday. I have ridden some 300 mile days on this bike, and at the end of the day, you still just park it, and look at it in awe and immense appreciation of this amazing bike... I wish I could shake the hands of the engineers that made this magic happen, and to Suzuki for deciding to build the bike in the first place... I raise my glass of sake towards Hamamatsu... Cheers!

@@MrGamman3yt - well it might have bene 45, but still really pretty good! My Rg-250 (no power valve) on the other hand gets horrible gas mileage - more like 30 mpg even trying to be "efficient"... but hey mpg is not why we ride these bikes! Smiles per gallong is still off the charts!

Hands down the best thing on 2 wheels. For those who were not blessed enough to ride this machine it was my all time favourite. I rode gsxr 1100, gsxr 750, gs1150e, fzr1000, interceptor 1000, fz750, ninja 900, rz500, rz350 as well as dirt bikes of all sizes. Nothing compares to the Gamma. I would give my left nut to get back on one. 1986 gamma rg 500 = 4 lbs per hp wet weight 2016 gsxr 600 = 4 lbs per hp wet weight. Not a lot of difference in 30 years. gamma was and still is the cats ass of bikes.

Lovely to hear a well-jetted RG being fed some berries. Contrary to popular opinion, they were no widow maker. With decent tyres and suspension, they are a safe, fun and comfy motorbike at speed.

I found an original untouched one owner 85 model RG 500 with 4000 km on the clock in Sydney Australia back in 1995 , it took me a few weeks of reminding the owner of this just how dangerous this bike was and that he should never ride it again before he sold it to me for $3800 , on the way home I pulled up at the first set of traffic lights and when let the clutch out nothing happened so I gave it some more throttle and I was still sitting there not moving, thought the clutch had let go but when I looked around I could see that the 10 year old tyre on the rear was the only thing that had let go , that thing was smoking up good n proper I just kept winding it on until it finally got some traction and launched ,I have ridden bikes from the 40s ,50s,60s,70s,80s,90s through to 2018 but 500cc two strokes of the mid 80s are the hardest to ride well and produce the biggest smiles and loudest laughs when mastered ,this also applies to all the 500cc two stroke single cylinder mx bikes from this era, you just had to have both , sadly no longer available

Kevin I still own my stock (save replacement of the rear monoshock with a rebuildable Fox unit with remote reservoir) RG500 Gamma bought new in early 1986. In late '86 I had the opportunity to have it speed tested by Police radar. Suzuki spec a top speed of 245mph. Recorded top speed of mine was 247kph. I weighed 72KG at the time. Linear to 200, diminishing curve to 225, slower curve to 235, tuck and wind up to 247. Does it with ease. With perf mods, this is a 280~300kph bike..

Glad to see another one in such great shape. Nothing quite like the sound that thing makes when the power valves rotate and you hit the powerband.....Keep the shinny side up!

That's with stock expansion chambers. With competition chambers ,jetting and porting this bike gained so much horsepower it was almost unrideable by anyone less than a professional. The top end on this bike was so scary it was like being shot out of cannon. It reminded me of current electric vehicles, but way worse because the acceleration was so hard at 80 mph that you actually had to really concentrate to just hold on. These bikes came to Canada detuned severely and needed jetting to widen the powerband immediately. The stock chambers were off also and needed to be replaced to get the revs in the stratosphere.

It always amuses me when people spend thousands upgrading components on a bike or a car, yet won't spend $50 for a couple of dyno runs. Makes me think your priorities are more about looks than results. Or, possibly, you're just making stuff up. What does "full motor" even mean?
@verbosedude
@verbosedude 3 жыл бұрын
@@redin575 LOL. “Full Motor” means $4,000 worth of complete motor build, porting, re-centered domes, groved head with copper O-ring seals, off-center-bored carbs, custom pistons, cleaned and smoothed cases, Nova billet-hobbed cartidge transmission, balanced cranks and balanced rods to the fraction of a gram, re-pressed micro-polished end bushings, flat-ground thrust-washers to spec, polished rotary valves with custom window conrours, etc, etc… why the cynisism? I had this bike and spent twenty+ years having it built to the trim as shown… then let my lifelong trophy go on to another to live their dream. Honestly, your post was a troll. Cheers!

Thanks for the video. I had one for a number of years. Everyone loved to test ride it. However it was a terrible street motorcycle. Great for flogging but honestly nothing else. Drive it like this and it was happy and would use 20L/100 gas. On a hot day in town your a$$ would roast off. Rings every season, 6mm screw heads and barrels too weak, prone to strip. If you didn't drive it hard it would cake up with oil. Wheelie 1st gear shift into 2nd and you're at 80kmh.
