I just discovered Rhiannon Giddens and her music. It reminds me of how little I know about this nation of 330 million. I was born and raised in NYC but spent most of my adult years traveling the globe in the military and State Department. I retired in NC and never heard of her. She is absolutely wonderful. I’m going to buy all her music for my listening pleasure. It’s a reminder that the noise around me is a distraction, while everyday people never get the attention they deserve. Keep up the good work. The nation needs you.

We first discovered Rhiannon when she was with the Carolina Chocolate Drops at Merlefest about a decade ago. Besides having a voice for the ages, she is a fine instrumentalist. She has dug deep into the American tradition, and, for those of us who love traditional music, she is a treasure. But that's not all she does. Check out her duet with Paul Simon on his American Tune. It is as good as music gets.

Because of Beth Gibbons I’ve uncovered an array of vocal goddesses; I even listen to music which I don’t understand a single lyric, such as music by Japanese Folk vocalist Ikue Asazaki. I’m so glad that I found Giddens while trying to find ol’ Blues artists similar to the magnificent Blind Willie Johnson. Everyone that I know thinks I’m a hardcore rap lover because it’s what you will mostly hear me blasting whilst driving, & well I guess I am a hardcore rap lover; however, I’d like to think that I’m just a hardcore music lover. I believe your version truly captures the spirit of Ms Cotten and I am sure she would be, or is very proud with what you have done to breath even more life into her creations.

Sometimes I dial up this when I am agitated. In just a few minutes, I feel level and peaceful. That is a beautiful thing.

Maybe four months ago, a 240p video of an old-timey group performing at a radio station, appeared in my recommended feed. Since then I've been working through Rhiannon Giddens output, as well as the Carolina Chocolate Drops. How did I get to 2018 having never heard of this incredible musician, Rhiannon Giddens. The other "Drops" ain't too shabby here, either.

Every now and again the spirit leads you to a treasure, today I have been so led. Oh my Lordy, I love the way she embodies the songs she sing. She's so amazing at putting her emotions at work to deliver something so penetrating. She really takes me on the journey with her in this one. This is just such beautiful poetry :)

She makes every song she sings just a little bit better. Like her song, "At The Purchaser's Option".

@@trudesoto7807 rhiannon is honoring Ms.cotton and bringing her genius to 21st light and u seem to have a problem w/that because she is biracial.hypocrytical and bizzare.

@@im-already-tired-tomorrow - You need to stop pretending that my comments are about Rhiannon. They are about people like YOU and Bernard. You can play games and try to make it about ME being prejudiced. But that's exactly what biased people do. Rhiannon isn't bringing anything to the 21st century. Elizabeth Cotten's music is already known. And her records sell to those who value MUSIC and folk CULTURE. *Rhianna is only bringing E.C's music to those who need a "beautiful" golden girl to perform it for them to stop and take notice....to value it. My point was that this VISUAL BIAS (and race bias) is still lingering after all these decade since E. Cotten died. People like you don't do this to Black men anymore, but you keep waiting for someone who looks like Scarlett Johansen to sing like Aretha. Or a bronze colored Barbie to sing like Nina Simone.... when it should be about the MUSIC. *If you keep Re-discovering women like Elizabeth Cotten it means she isn't lost- she's getting thrown away while YOU and Bernhard look for something bright and shiney to catch your eyes.*
