The wonderful Elizabeth Cotton on Pete Seegers Rainbow Quest Show in 1965. Pete looks quite emotional through parts of this so its a heart warming watch
0:00 instrumental
1:37 Introduction and interview
3:20 Honey Babe, your Papa Cares for You
10:10 Willson Rag
12:58 Freight Train
I wasn't aware before this that Pete knew Elizabeth as his families nanny/housemaid? Pete and his family apparently encouraged her musical career which is a great story. Its worth reading this below:
Born as Elizabeth Nevills in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1895, her upbringing was typical of the period, and she was working as a domestic by the age of 12. However, she’d also found music by then, first by picking at a banjo and then moving on to her brother’s guitar, which she taught herself to play in an unusual way. She was left-handed, so had to hold the instrument upside-down, which meant she played bass with her fingers and the melody with her thumb. (Most left-handers just re-string the guitar, but her unusual style would later become known as Cotten pickin’.)
By her late teens, Elizabeth had married Frank Cotten and given birth to a daughter, and it was about then that she put music aside and began devoting herself to her family and church. Still working as a domestic, she stayed with her rambling husband for the next couple of decades, relocating at one time or another to New York and Washington, but when her daughter grew up and married, Elizabeth divorced him and went to live with her.
By the 1940s she was working as a housekeeper for the Seeger family, which had a long tradition of musical - and social - activism. (Pete’s father, mother, step-mother, and most of his siblings were involved in both activities throughout their lives.) With their encouragement, Elizabeth again began playing guitar, and even though she’d missed decades of practice she eventually regained her skill. By the late 1950s she was ready to go public, and her groundbreaking album established her as a performer, and as as composer too. One of the cuts was a song she’d written as a girl - “Freight Train” - and it would become a country standard.
Even though she continued with her housekeeping duties for a while, Elizabeth gradually became more comfortable performing in public, and as her fame grew she eventually retired from her previous work and devoted most of her time to entertaining her many fans. She even grew relaxed enough on stage to tell stories of her childhood. A Grammy winner and the recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship Award, she was 92 when she died in 1987.

She’s got that bluesy ragtime feel. A bit like Blind Blake or Blind Boy Fuller. A real Piedmont blues sound though, but then she was from North Carolina.

When youre a millenial who has spent his whole life listening to hipster shit like Wipers, Suicide or other weird acts, you get to a point where youre almost 30 years old and beyond and all you need to listen to is that whole fucking video to finally feel something again. Libba's music will forever sounds so fresh and new because of the way she shares her memories and the pure nostalgia she feels everyday for all the deep stuff she lived through. What I love the most is the fact that she is one of the most relatable musician ive ever seen or heard. Even if shes really old in all the footage we can consume of her, she manages to sound like a kid exploring life in the most hectic way possible. Her presence is simple clear though it is deep and scary at the same time. im not even gonna get into the fact that she learned how to play a guitar that was upside down, all by herself. What a true icon of American Music.

I've loved 'Freight Train' since the 50's. My mother would sing it to rock me to sleep and she later bought the record for me. I was frozen in time when I again heard this song 60+ years later on KZfaq. Seeing her play it is so wonderous. Thanks so much for the memories!

They ? Its her name , several picking styles are named after the person who invented them not everything is about race baiting , enjoy the music
@Gizmocialism
@Gizmocialism 3 ай бұрын
@@jaccabwa7914Elizabeth Cotten herself referred to it as “Cotton Picking” because her style of playing the guitar inverted, switching the usual thumb-bass and index-melody method, was almost wholly unique to her as an artist. It has no connotation with her race, at least none which is known regarding the etymology of her husband Frank Cotten’s name he gave her. I believe very strongly in contextualizing the history of American folk music including all aspects racial but this is just a reach and obliquely insulting to Ms. Cotten.
@juliev940
@juliev940 Ай бұрын
Nobody told her what's up and down on a guitar so she chose to play it like that. Sorry folks but for me it's no guarantee for authenticity. The "cotton picking" thing that Pete Seeger mentions are his own words. The style existed many years before Elizabeth Cotton. "Cotton Picking" is a racist way to describe the style. Unfortunately it has gone into the English language for describing a guitar style which was invented many years before by non left-handed guitar players.
@gernotboesser6901
@gernotboesser6901 Ай бұрын
What's wrong with the words "cotton picking" ? The "racism" is in your own mind, not in the words. Stop this kind of pigeonhole thinking, it will be better for you.
