I watched a lot of TV in the 1970s and usually the shows don't hold up but "Rhoda" is truly funny and well written. "The Shower" is my favorite. Real belly laughs.

IT does hold up really well. Not dated as MTM was. Still good show, but Rhoda is timeless!

Yup, that episode of 'Rhoda' made me want to punch Linda Lavin in her smug, neurotic, pinched little stupid face. It has been said that any actor or actress who can elicit a strong emotional reaction from an audience, must be really skilled at their job. To that point, I detested Shelley Winters for many years, because of the horrible role of the rotten mother of a victimized blind girl that she played in the heartbreaking film, "A Patch of Blue." One of my all-time favourite films. Elizabeth Hartman and Sidney Poitier were both brilliant. Sensitive and sweet. She passed away tragically at a young age, and he passed away last year, I believe.

In response to the comments regarding two characters ingesting alcohol during pregnancy: The corelation of alcohol consumption during pregnancy and fetal damage is a relatively recent finding. I don't recall precisely when the problem was addressed, but it must've been in the 80s. If you've ever watched "The Way We Were", you've seen a pregnant Katie sitting on her deck in Malibu drinking a martini and smoking. You're right. Different times.
@faithfulchristian91717 жыл бұрын
As someone who was an adult in the 70's, I can tell you that people knew it was not a good idea to drink when pregnant; but they were told that one or even two drinks would not have any negative effects on the baby. So even pregnant women would have an occasional drink. They also knew that cigarette smoking was not a good idea when pregnant; however, I can remember very definitely that the warning against cigarette smoking (for everyone) came out in the late 60's and it said, "cigarette smoking MAY be hazardous to your health." It did not say it definitely was hazardous to your health. Again, I think doctors said that an occasional cigarette would not harm the baby. Today we know that any alcohol or cigarette smoking is not good for a fetus and total abstinence is required.

We didn't need You Tube during the 1970s because the shows we watch on you tube were new on TV during the 1970s. Same goes for the 1960s. TV shows were terrific from 1960 to 1990. I think all the script writers were pushed off a cliff during January 1, 1990. The wife fearing she could be pregnant is a popular plot for a sitcom.

@Crystal McCarroll of course, confirmation by a doctor was an option and recommended if one's test was positive. I distinctly recall doing the test at home, which was EPT, and was an involved process including a test tube and its holder. A positive result was a circle at the bottom of the test tube. My mom was amazed we could do a home test. My son was born August of 1981 and I'll never forget how I felt seeing that ring shape at the bottom that tube! Btw, I still have the holder because my mom did a craft project with it and gave it to me as a keepsake.
