I'd eat bark off a tree with a smile as i am a naturalist. But as a child i ate well y gourmet foods. Y yes, I'm Jewish. Recipes,, simmer beans in onion, garlic, tomatoes, Mexican spice, jalapenos, chix, olive oil, peppers hot y green. Of course you let them soak overnight in water an inch over the bucket refrigerated beforehand. Than you fried a taco in coconut oil. Smother it in sour cresm. Make homemade salsa in a blender with tomatoes, cilantro, fresh peppers, pineapples, garlic, onion, homemade Mexican spice. Load on taco. But jalapeno cheese, guacamole optional. Lettuce of course on the base again with more sour cream as a topping.. Say grace y good to chow. I could tell you how to make blueberry soup as well with cinnamon sticks.

2021 New Year's Eve - We're all stuck at home with the fallout of Omicron and came across this classic from NYE '77. Betty White passed today. Also, rest in peace Valerie ("Hiya, Rho"), David ("Hiya, Joe"), Ron ("Hiya, Gar"), Nancy ("Hiya, ma), Harold ("Hiya, pop") and Lorenzo (your doorman). Thanks for continuing to bring us laughter with your comedic brilliance.

Awww. I'm really glad Joe came back to spend NYE with Rhoda. Such a cute ending. I always see Joe talked about negatively in the comments, but I think the writers tried to make him seem like a jerk so the audience would be ok with him being written off. I really wish Joe and Rhoda could have made up after spending NYE together.

I read that the studio/a bc/nbc/cbs whichever, felt that the show was better and had higher ratings with Rhoda as a single woman. Which I find hard to believe. But I guess that’s what the “temperature” out there was at the time . And one of the only times we kinda get to see “Carlton Your Doorman” !

This is where they could have salvaged the show before it when off the track. Rhoda and Joe looked like they were going to reconcile in the last romantic scene they had together. Anne Meara was a great asset to the show and should have remained for the entire run of the series. Season 3 was still palatable with the help of Brenda (Julie Kavner), However it didn't last and Season 4 brought the divorce and too many cast changes. Nancy Walker came back after starring in Blansky's Beauties, but it was already too late. The Rhoda that we all knew and loved on MTM was gone. The best way to see Rhoda is on MTM! Happy New Year Rhoda and Joe! RIP Valerie and David.

I don't think his face is ever seen. _Fraser_ took this a step further in which Niles' wife Maris is never seen or heard. Even when they had a reunion of the cast on the _Sally Jesse Raphael Show_ back in the 90s, I think) they show him standing off-stage dressed in a doorman's uniform shot from the neck down.

Lorenzo Music must have pre-recorded his lines as Carlton the Doorman because occasionally you can hear Lorenzo Music's distinctive laugh off-camera when someone is speaking to him over the building intercom. FYI, Mr. Music was born on May 2, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York, and died on August 4, 2001 in Los Angeles, California, from lung and bone cancer at age 64. In addition to being the voice of the animated titular comic strip character Garfield and many other television credits, he wrote some episodes of _Love American Style._ He created and composed music, including the show's theme, for _The Bob Newhart Show,_ he was one of the _Mary Tyler Moore_ show writers, and he also created _Rhoda._

They had a chance to make this show a successful comedy and they blew it - right here in this episode. A 'comedy' doesn't mean you laugh (that's 'comical'). It means you get a happy resolution to everyone's story: the lovers get married; a baby is born; justice triumphs and all is right with the world. (In a tragedy, a person's flaws get the better of him and he ends up 'unhappily ever after' somehow - dead, in prison, banished, insane.) They could have been realistic: New Years is a time when people look back at the previous year, ask themselves if they are really happy; regret mistakes; resolve to do better. They are tantalizing the audience here (am I the only one thinking Joe didn't really have some great plans for New Year's and was just saying that to keep up a front of being a happy-go-lucky bachelor to Rhoda, the same way she was saying she had loads of invitations for New Year's?). They could have had Joe come to the realization that he was happier with Rhoda than without; that they had good times together, and that he needed to and was willing to work on the relationship, sticking to it even when it felt dull or confining or he was restless, etc. If they had made Joe mellower, less impatient, less angry and explosive (which was supposed to be sexy but just made him a jerk) and if they had made Rhoda more confident, less clingy and insecure - in short, if they could have shown both characters growing and growing UP and being more mature, committed adults - they could have turned this show around from its downward spiral. Instead, in a 'comedy' they gave us the tragedy of divorce, loneliness, isolation, self-absorption and failure to love unconditionally - they failed to give us the stuff that comedies are made of: self-sacrificial love that overcomes all obstacles (whether the hero is risking his life to slay aliens from outer space or risking rejection to woo and win the fair maid). They wanted to give us moral lessons in how to be modern, feminist women and emasculated men (who cannot make a heroic sacrifice for anyone, especially women), and traded real comedy for hollow propaganda. No wonder this show never really worked and quickly became a mess of random characters who never really gel as an ensemble.

Figaro Hey! Nice analysis. I think you’ve hit it: The senselessness of the tragedy the writers have written here does have the ring of propaganda. Every member of the audience is hoping the characters will do the right thing and be happy, yet sad stupidity is forced down our throats. To what end? Zero population growth? Lowered expectations and more docile taxpayers? How have we actually improved things since this time? Have we come a long way . . . or the wrong way?
@AfterTheRain_Beth
@AfterTheRain_Beth 3 жыл бұрын
No-one expects a perfect marriage. The audience sure doesn't. There was nothing terminally wrong with their marriage. Why the writers had to shove separation & divorce down our throats is a mystery to me. There's no comedy in a comfortable, stable marriage? So what! It's better than a depressing storyline like this. Joe was a nice guy who turned into a jerk overnight. This story arc pushed the narrative that even good marriages are doomed to fail. They gave it, what 2 years? This series would have been much better (imo) had they stayed together!

The writers were in a mood. They started ruining MTM the last couple years too by changing Mary's personality and the others to a lesser degree. Mary became fairly unlikable in the end. Losing Rhoda was the beginning of the end. I did enjoy Georgette whos personality they improved . All in all I miss the shows and dearly miss Valerie as Rhoda . I even miss the 70s ,big time.

I miss Wes Stern continuing as Lenny, Brenda's cousin and stand-in boyfriend early in the series who stops appearing altogether. By this point in the series he is only mentioned, not seen. (After his few appearances on this series he mostly disappears from the screen industry.) Even though I was a preteen and it was past my time I would see reruns of the _Partridge Family_ spin-off episode of Bobby Sherman and Wes Stern which was the vehicle to launch their ensemble show for ABC _Getting Together._ Even though Bobby Sherman was the show's heartthrob and Wes Stern was the nebish comic sidekick, I was always a lot more attracted to the adorable Wes Stern. Bobby Sherman didn't do a thing for me.

Possibly, but Starsky and Hutch had a xmas episode and Spelling Goldberg produced it. I don't think being Jewish stops Hollywood cashing in on sentiment. All they want is as much money as they can get.

What building has only one doorman? Seems like Carlton works 24/7. There should be at least 4 doormen, given that there are 168 hours in a week.
