The importance of "ear training" helped Rhonda's success along with networking at NAMM and recognizing early as an Artist the need to "Take care of yourself business-wise, financially...Live on a little less than you need".
The Sessions Panel & our Artist Series interviews with Dom Famularo share music industry knowledge to musicians worldwide!! The panel events include Entertainment Law, Marketing, Networking, Artist Relations & Motivational skills and experiences from professionals and experts who have been "on the road" and are successful in the industry. The interviews share tips, exclusive background information from Artists in the music industry and the importance of knowing music history.

A virtuoso, no doubt! She can cover all aspects of slapping, fingering, walking, popping & chording her way up/down/sideways on a bass neck, either covering a jazzy head or soloing. But...check out Carol Kaye - The Grande Dame of Bass. Now 86 and still articulate physically and she can pull off about any line she ever laid down on tape...and a hoot to listen to her stories 'back in the day' of the Wrecking Crew. Clearly, she laid an important foundation for not just female bassists - but ALL electric bassists! And you ought to here her comp some jazz standards on a guitar! Ha! I think she could've really made a name for herself on a jazz-box alone (and she was real pretty, too!), but necessity (young mother & broke!) met opportunity and she made history: the musical history of hits & personal favorites that old folks like me grew up listening to through the decades (though at the time i had NO idea who played the parts in the studio, and I think for royalty reasons music record labels sure didn't go out of their way to publicize/credit/pay sidemen/sidewomen(!) Oh, and PS, Tal Wilkenfeld is no slouch, esp. if you see her with Jeff Beck (2008 or so ?) Live at Ronnie Scotts. That tone on her beautiful Jazz bass + her expressive yet technical solo on 'Cause We've Ended as Lovers' is tops...not to mention she was only about 22 at the time and Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and Alan Holdsworth, to name a few, are in the exclusive audience of only 250 peeps!!! And the hyper-look she gives Jeff when she finishes...I never get tired of seeing that face of hers! Like she's beaming inside, thinking "Are ya proud of me, Jeff!?" And his smile back at her is ear-to-ear and from the heart! Check it out if you haven't seen what I'm talking about(!)

I am always interested in what these guys actually make dollar wise. Ever since Bernard Purdie, who was supposedly one of the most in demand session players, had to resort to crowdfunding to print his autobiography you really have to take stock that they really dont do well financially even at that high level.

Rhonda, near the end of this interview, asks a question. Who set the mechanical rates? And, why hasn't it increased over the years? Doing a novice Google search, I found that a Copyright arbitration panel sets these rates. My question - Who gets to be on these panels? Is it just number-crunchers or are there any actual musicians allowed to have a say?

I have a friend that recorded a CD and I played bass on one song for no fee. He would not let me have a copy because he was worried that his song would get stolen. He somehow thinks he is going to lose money and could not grasp the fact as Rhonda says you need to play out to make money. Somehow he believes movie producers or television may use his recordings. There are so many artist out there trying to get their foot in the door and youve got to bust your ass. Nobody is going to come to you.

The musicians are faced with this dilemma of low pay percentages because when they started this they didn't stand up and buck the new system of greed and destruction! They could have just stopped making music available to online sales by not producing albums. The internet ruined music!

What would happen if musicians invested in creating a competitor to these big streaming companies and sent more of the revenue to the artists? I suspect that a lot of people would move to this new service if they knew the musicians were getting more of the money.

Yes she’s smart but also few musicians talk so much about the business side of music. It’s so unfair that people feel entitled to have the music for zero payment. Those of us who have always purchase vinyl appreciate that musicians should be paid. It’s very shockingly sad.

I get what she's saying about being underrepresented. BUT consumers are going to listen to whatever costs the least, and if you're going to charge more, you better deliver. But everytime an artist gets paid and gets established, they start putting out mediocre work. Unless you're trained in artistry to where you know how to make deliberate choices that deliver quality work EVERY TIME a la David Bowie, all you're doing is reusing the same bag of tricks. That can't be worth $20 a CD, or record, or whatever.
